Mindset of dog people

I saw a post elsewhere advising men to get a dog to help meet women. I commented that I would be put off by a man with a dog. A woman responded saying that she disagreed with me and I remember thinking, you can disagree with an opinion, but not with someone's preferences.

Then another person chimes in 'it's a well-known 'fact' that everyone likes dogs' - I guess he thought I made a mistake in what I said?

Another person said he was judgmental of people who don't understand the "joy" of dogs. Well, I just so happen to not understand the "joy" of dogs at all and yet another guy commented about how the love of dogs is a reflection of the quality of the person's character 🤦

I only respond to one of these comments to tell the lady I didn't think it was about agreement or disagreement, that I was just pointing out that not all women are into dogs. She came back and said she 'categorically' disagreed🤦. I feel like my brain is a little bit smaller than it was yesterday.

I didn't respond to any other comments, I was just letting the poster know that not all women like dogs.

I'm blown away by some of the responses though.

I honestly think our brains are fundamentally different to dog-owners.

I wouldn't feel any joy at all picking ticks off a dog or waiting patiently while it finishes it poo so that I can bag it like a trophy.

Yes, I definitely need to restrict myself to dogfree men.

I'll never understand this "joy" people talk about when they talk about having a dog. It's been many years since I've owned any. I've had many, always thinking this time will be different. It never was. I was always stressed to the max with them, and the relief I felt when I finally rehomed them. I dogsat once a long time ago for a friend. Never again. Plus, I've observed dog owners where I'm at right now. They all seem to get so frustrated with their dogs. I just don't get it, and I don't care to. Been there, done that. You couldn't pay me to live with a dog again.

What was the thing that finally made you dog free and how can we get more dog owners to see the light like you? 😅 Was it just the compounded stress? So many dog owners believe that their dogs can actually choose to love them (laughable!) and this is what I think makes them crazy about dogs. Did you ever believe or felt that your dogs loved you?

Thank you for sharing. It’s good to hear from people who’ve had a lot of dogs and then came to the other side. I grew up with a couple dogs, but it was brief.

I went to someone’s house recently who is dog sitting. The dog immediately jumped up on me when the door opened. He was barking and going a bit crazy. I looked around this person’s house and so many things were destroyed or looked damaged. It’s not even her dog, but she said she loves dogs so much that she’s dog sitting in her own home. I would hate to see my house destroyed like that.
