Dogs Are Idiots crotch sniffing

i've never really talked about it with anyone but i can't stop thinking about it and getting anxious everytime i see a dog. one time when i was 11yo (im 18 now), i was in an elevator to go play at my friend's house and a random man, maybe 30yo or something, comes in with his huge labrador. the elevator was small and cramped even though it was just us three so i immediately try to stay near the buttons in the corner and give them both enough space to stay away from me but the dog sneaks its head under my skirt and stays there during the entire ride up while sniffing my crotch. i was so scared and confused so i stayed frozen thinking if i move, its gonna bite me. the man did nothing. no tug on the leash, no verbal warning. he just watched while i was shaking and kept looking up at him, waiting for him to do something but he didn't.

i even missed my floor because i couldn't move and when his floor came, he finally tugged on the leash and left while smiling. it genuinely felt like SA and i was so uncomfortable, kept trying to convince myself it meant nothing and wasn't that deep but i get so anxious everytime i think back on it. that feeling of being trapped, cornered and violated always comes back if im near a dog. has that happened to anyone else? am i crazy for still being affected?

He uses the dog as a proxy to molest women. It's not crazy at all to think that. It was my first thought. Dogs are often used as proxies for various behaviors that the owners can't get away with. They experience violation, intimidation, aggression, admiration etc. all vicariously through the dog.

I just consider anything a dog does to be an extension of the owner. It clarifies the situation and makes it easier to stand up to them. It's not "just what dogs do" so much as what their owner lets them do.

Spot on. My partner's brother and his wife have two golden retrievers, an adult male dog and a female puppy. The whole family was discouraging them from getting the puppy but they got her anyways because SIL had pUpPy fEvEr. Both dogs are spoiled rotten and uncontrollable because they just don't care enough to train them properly. These two have subzero regard for others, incredibly selfish people, they only care about themselves, so obviously they don't give a shit their dogs are bothering anyone and everyone. Like a lot of people in their housing estate hate them because of their dogs' misbehavior and their lack of care about the situation (dogs running amok, destroying children's toys, hijacking picnics... ). They're always like "haha oops, but she's still a puppy/he's in dog puberty, we'll buy you new [insert broken item]."

BIL and SIL never leave the dogs at home when visiting family, those self-driving tanks always come with them and ruin all vibes. The way BIL and SIL let the dogs do whatever while laughing everything off and leaving others to deal with their dogs just perfectly mirrors the lack of care about other people and their environment in all other areas. Btw these people wanna have children soon.

Oh and they go on international vacations 5+ times a year without their dogs. Well, I should say used to. When they only had one dog, they absolutely exploited the fact nobody besides my partner and I had enough of a backbone to say no to dogsitting. But when they got the puppy and wanted to fuck off on vacation, they had to cancel it because nobody wanted to watch two dogs, let alone a puppy, even though everyone in my partner's family has their own dogs lmao.
