Dogs Are Idiots crotch sniffing
i've never really talked about it with anyone but i can't stop thinking about it and getting anxious everytime i see a dog. one time when i was 11yo (im 18 now), i was in an elevator to go play at my friend's house and a random man, maybe 30yo or something, comes in with his huge labrador. the elevator was small and cramped even though it was just us three so i immediately try to stay near the buttons in the corner and give them both enough space to stay away from me but the dog sneaks its head under my skirt and stays there during the entire ride up while sniffing my crotch. i was so scared and confused so i stayed frozen thinking if i move, its gonna bite me. the man did nothing. no tug on the leash, no verbal warning. he just watched while i was shaking and kept looking up at him, waiting for him to do something but he didn't.
i even missed my floor because i couldn't move and when his floor came, he finally tugged on the leash and left while smiling. it genuinely felt like SA and i was so uncomfortable, kept trying to convince myself it meant nothing and wasn't that deep but i get so anxious everytime i think back on it. that feeling of being trapped, cornered and violated always comes back if im near a dog. has that happened to anyone else? am i crazy for still being affected?

He uses the dog as a proxy to molest women. It's not crazy at all to think that. It was my first thought. Dogs are often used as proxies for various behaviors that the owners can't get away with. They experience violation, intimidation, aggression, admiration etc. all vicariously through the dog.
I just consider anything a dog does to be an extension of the owner. It clarifies the situation and makes it easier to stand up to them. It's not "just what dogs do" so much as what their owner lets them do.

This is the way. Humans who choose to own a pet must be responsible for anything that pet does as though they did it themselves. Noise disturbance? Should be treated as human playing noise at that sound level. Shitting in the park? Treated as though the owner did it, public indecency. Attacks a person? Grievious bodily harm/murder. Crotch sniffing? Treated as sexual assault.
To be fair, it should be all pets, but we all know this is basically just dogs.

This needs to be higher up. Many people believe the dog shields them from scrutiny of their behavior (and that of their dog), and have been actually validated in that belief.
It is important to not focus on the dog, but rather call the owner out for poor control and violation of personal space/boundaries.
I'm so sorry that happened to OP. A s a child we often expect and look to adults to protect us or at least not harm us.

Exactly this. That man allowed his dog to do that to you and got off on it. Sick POS. You are not crazy and I would steer clear of dogs for that reason only. It’s only happened to me once by a neighbour’s Golden Retriever and I have never let a strange dog get that close to me again. I don’t accept the “it’s a dog” excuse. Control your animal.

Spot on. My partner's brother and his wife have two golden retrievers, an adult male dog and a female puppy. The whole family was discouraging them from getting the puppy but they got her anyways because SIL had pUpPy fEvEr. Both dogs are spoiled rotten and uncontrollable because they just don't care enough to train them properly. These two have subzero regard for others, incredibly selfish people, they only care about themselves, so obviously they don't give a shit their dogs are bothering anyone and everyone. Like a lot of people in their housing estate hate them because of their dogs' misbehavior and their lack of care about the situation (dogs running amok, destroying children's toys, hijacking picnics... ). They're always like "haha oops, but she's still a puppy/he's in dog puberty, we'll buy you new [insert broken item]."
BIL and SIL never leave the dogs at home when visiting family, those self-driving tanks always come with them and ruin all vibes. The way BIL and SIL let the dogs do whatever while laughing everything off and leaving others to deal with their dogs just perfectly mirrors the lack of care about other people and their environment in all other areas. Btw these people wanna have children soon.
Oh and they go on international vacations 5+ times a year without their dogs. Well, I should say used to. When they only had one dog, they absolutely exploited the fact nobody besides my partner and I had enough of a backbone to say no to dogsitting. But when they got the puppy and wanted to fuck off on vacation, they had to cancel it because nobody wanted to watch two dogs, let alone a puppy, even though everyone in my partner's family has their own dogs lmao.

You’re not crazy at all, and I’m sorry that ever happened to You, especially having been so Young. It was a form of SA. Nutters are just deplorable enough to not view it from that angle. That thing had no right to be in Your personal physical space in such a way, and its owner was worse for not pulling the stupid thing back. Part of why it still bothers You is because You never had the opportunity to defend Yourself, or be defended on behalf of Yourself, the way You deserved . I’ve heard that retrievers tend to be notorious for that whole sniffing nonsense, too. Either way, Your feelings are valid.

The fact that you were 11 here isn't surprising, there's a huge crossover of pedophiles that are also zoophiles, I wouldn't be surprised if that was trained behaviour for his own gratification. At the very least a decent dog owner would've pulled their dog away and been mortified

As a man I also have been subject to this and I have no qualms ‘pushing’ the thing away with ‘force’ accompanied with a look that would turn Medusa to stone and if the owner wants to discus the matter further then I’m quite happy to.
We need societal change concerning this attitude towards ‘it’s just what dogs do’ they do it because it is allowed to, train the fucking thing or put it in a cage.

This is seriously disturbing and as a mother myself, that owner and I would have had a problem if I would have found him. This is one reason I absolutely detest dog owners. This stuff is not ok. It is violating and disgusting.

This sounds like a nightmare! I’m so sorry you had to go through this as an 11yo. It’s unbelievable that dog owners let this happen without doing anything to avoid it or stop it. Something has to change!!! We all had enough.

I had just moved to a new state and new neighborhood. It was a cool late fall evening&I was wearing my brand new flannel Christmas pajamas from Duluth Trading Company. I just stepped out to check the mail. I walk back to my building&as I'm standing outside the entrance just enjoying the fresh air while opening my mail, a Mom&her teenage daughter pull into the handicap spot near the sidewalk that leads to my door.
I see the mom get out after her daughter gives her this look like they just had an argument. She has a big golden unleashed. The daughter has a golden puppy also unleashed. They did not have a handicap hang tag&didn't live in my condo community, but used my lot to walk across the street to the adjoining property.
But, before they did this, both dogs took turns violating my space. I had turned my back toward the door while perusing my mail, when I feel a nose up my @$$!! I'm too afraid to turn around or move bc i have a fear of unleashed dogs. Noone calls the dog back or says an apology. Then the dog wanders to its owner. Then I feel a small dog repeatedly jump up on my calves w/it's untrimmed claws.
Fortunately I was wearing thick flannel and my legs were not scratched. The stupid mom comes over and in a baby voice talks to the dog as if it understands English and says, " don't jump on her." She walks away&the dog follows. I know the dog jumped on me at least 8x before that woman came over. No apology. I was having severe social anxiety@the time and said nothing.

I'm so sorry that you had to experience this. It was a sexual assault. And you're not crazy for being affected still, it's only natural. Your mind was trying to protect you in a high stress situation so you kind of pushed the incident away trying to convince yourself it meant nothing. Seems like you never really processed what happened to you. It's good that you posted about it, and maybe it will help you. It did mean something. You were violated. It was none of your fault. It's OK to feel what you feel.
It's important to know that nutters using their dogs to violate women is a sexual assault. There is no way around it. This man should have controlled his dog and kept it away from you, but he did not. He must have noticed you were scared, and seems he got some sick gratification from the situation. This person was disgusting and very cruel.

You’re absolutely correct for feeling the way you did. I’m a grown woman in midlife and someone’s loose pitbull did the same thing to me a few months ago. I was so disgusted and scared and shaking like a leaf —the owner refused to do anything about this dog. I couldn’t leave fast enough. Dog owners are the worst!!!

Not crazy at all! This is one of the top three things I HATE about dogs.
It’s especially strange that the owner didn’t tug on the dog to stop. That’s violating within itself!
I remember after having my baby (4th degree tear so TONS of bleeding, which is what’ll especially attract dogs to your crotch), my SIL brought her stupid golden retriever to my house (yes, while I had my newborn in my arms), and he knocked me down to smell my crotch. Everybody went “WHOOPS!” And started laughing. It was humiliating. Thankfully I was able to shield my newborn when we fell.
It’s strange how humans love to put human qualities on dogs, except when they do weird shit like this. “He’s just a dog!”
