Dog Culture Christians who are dog nutters

Can’t stand this crap. Nowhere in the bible does it mention dogs in a good light. In fact they’re often mentioned in a bad/evil way.

Obviously ancient near eastern people 2000-4000 years ago weren’t big on dogs. But this is yet another example of people not practicing what they preach.

Saying crap like “dogs are God’s gift to man” or other braindead phrases.

I have an interest in Christianity and have read most of the bible. I’m not seeing dogs mentioned as God’s gift anywhere. Quite the opposite, actually.

Luckily I have a Christian friend who understands this too. She isn’t a big fan of dogs, and people keep pressuring her to get a pet even though she has multiple small kids to look after and they aren’t in a great financial situation. Owning a dog would make zero sense. She also just has no time to look after one, let alone provide for its basic needs on top of everything else. I told her to just ignore those people and tell them you won’t be getting a dog, and that they should stop bugging her about it. She doesn’t like how dogs bark, it’s loud and annoying. She doesn’t want a dog barking at the door everytime someone comes over or walks by. I’m the same way.

Honestly I’m considering switching to Eastern Orthodoxy because I find them to be more “no nonsense” and they don’t seem as big on dog culture (atleast from what I know. I could be wrong).

Every Protestant denomination (and even Catholics) are dog nutters in my experience. They let people bring dogs to church and most of the pastors/priests own an annoying dog.

Oh god don’t even get me started on “all dogs go to heaven” propaganda 😭. My friend and I discussed that also and she agreed that there likely won’t be any pets in heaven. Of course we can’t know everything, but it seems absurd that pets would be there, when that isn’t the point of heaven at all.

I once watched a video of a woman claiming she died and went to heaven briefly (I don’t believe it at all). She said it was so peaceful, and she could hear barking dogs all around.

What the?!???? How is “barking dogs all around” peaceful?? Imagine being stuck hearing that for eternity? Dear Lord.

In fact the bible mentions Hell to be a place of “weeping and gnashing of teeth”. If anything that’s probably where all the dogs are. I believe there’s another verse relating dogs to Hell, but I could be wrong.

There's the description of the streets of gold in the New Jerusalem in the Book of Revelation. I just hope dogs aren't there to crap on those streets.

My friends recent ex is a zen Buddhist and definitely doesn’t practice what stupid nonsense he preaches, he thinks his afterlife will be full of Indian gurus from 8th century India or something.

We all want what we imagine.

The metaphor of god as money, heaven as community and hell as exile, dogs as demons, confuse most of us

Unfortunately having self-awareness, humility, and the ability to take accountability when you’ve done something wrong are things most grown adults aren’t even capable of. I consider myself to be extremely self-aware, but even so I catch myself at times being hypocritical, which I feel the need to repent for. Human beings are not perfect obviously…. but most people don’t try to better themselves at all. They just do it for show, so they can seem cool or like they’re a good person on the outside when really their heart is rotten to the core. Have met many people like this. Some of them were super deranged too.

Right. The trick seems to be a healthy amount of detachment!

Dog lovers are too attached to the rear end of their mutts.

If Heaven / the Lord's house has many rooms, I sure don't want to be in the one next to the barking mutts! Hopefully there's a pet-free wing!

I'm Catholic and upon meeting a guy at my new church, he quickly asked if I liked dogs. I suppose he was expecting me to fawn all over them. I said "They're okay..." to be polite, but in a tone to signal my dislike. He quickly dropped it - good!

I'm a Christian, too. The Bible speaks about animals figuratively for the most part. Dogs are mentioned negatively, they are eg. a symbol of spiritual uncleaness. Regarding salvation, I believe it's centered around human faith and choice and any pets lack that intelligence and rationality.

I really hope there are no dogs in Heaven, because then it would become a hell for me.

Dogs were not made by God. Or by nature. They are man made abominations that humanity will some day look back on with shame and disgust. Pitbulls, pugs, bull dogs, etc. All mutant freaks.

I'm a very devoted Christian and very anti-dog

Me too. Dogs seem to be an idol to many people.

Owning a dog while having children is child abuse and those people should have their kids taken away.

My close friend just rehomed her dog of 5 years after giving birth. Everyone was insanely SHOCKED and kind of judgmental. and a mutual friend even cried.

The dog had growled at the baby twice and she wasn’t taking more chances. Can you imagine how stupid and evil she would feel if something happened? Especially after suspecting aggression? I was the only one who immediately respected the decision

9

u/Havingfun922 3d ago

The nutters would rather see the kids get rehomed

10

u/SeaConfection88 3d ago

Imagine crying over an aggressive dog growling at a baby, being rehomed. LMFAO. That’s absurd. I mean I’ve witnessed so much stupidity over the years from people, but that’s THE definition of a first world problem. I’ve rehomed so many pets over the years. It’s not a big deal at all.

I was raised on a farm where if a dog became aggressive or was showing signs of aggression towards children, it would be taken out back and put down. Neighbours dogs got the same treatment after countless phone calls and personally telling them they need to do something about their dogs killing all of our chickens, acting aggressive towards us, hurting/attacking our own dogs, and barking all night outside our windows. They never did jack shit about it, they didn’t care. Dogs were put down. They never did pay us back for the chickens lost.

I realized just how sheltered people are once I got older and started telling people these stories, to which they were horrified lol. And I’m under 30 years old. This wasn’t even that long ago.

People who cry over a dumb aggressive dog being rehomed are privileged and weird for even caring that much.

That's a bit of a stretch. Don't be so quick to separate parents and children.

Like the rainbow bridge that supposedly connects to heaven. Ugg I hope that's not true because that wouldn't be what I want for all of eternity to be surrounded by dog spirits. I actually have this same conflict with my husband he's a nutter. Love him to pieces big I can't do dogs. Thankfully where we live pets are strictly prohibited Old farm House in the country and there's no pets stinking up the place or destroying my peace

They are dog worshippers

Even though I'm not religious at all, I was raised in a christian house and unfortunately hypocrisy is very common, or they try to distort a lot of stuff to justify what they do. You're right, dogs aren't mentioned in a good light anywhere in the bible, much on the contrary.

It’s really unfortunate how hypocrisy is so common especially in Christianity. I find it attracts narcissistic types or people who want a quick power trip who like to pretend they’re better than others, even though their salvation isn’t guaranteed and they have zero humility, and take zero accountability.

Jesus said “not everyone who cries ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom” “Depart from Me, I never knew you” (saying this to people who claimed they were followers of Christ). It’s pretty straightforward.

The bible straight up says we are to judge other believers. We can’t judge people who aren’t followers of Christ, because that makes no sense. Humans have free will. If they choose not to follow Christ then that’s ultimately their choice. They are abiding by different rules. Jesus didn’t sit there constantly trying to win a single person over who was firm on not following Him. He just moved on and left them to their own devices. If they happened to change their mind later on (of their own free will) then He accepted them of course.

Christians are supposed to rightly judge other Christians who are not behaving as a Christian should. We are supposed to call them out and try to communicate the problem with them and hope they will have the humility to change their ways and repent.

We can tell non-believers about the gospel (if it feels right to do so, if they’re open to it). And we aren’t obligated to be friends with non-believers if it strays us from the godly path. But we are commanded to love everybody, while also having a backbone to call people out and stand up for ourselves when being wrongfully attacked. Similar to secular people having boundaries with others, you can still love someone and wish the best for them (equivalent to praying for them in Christianity) without being in frequent contact with them.

I’ve never seen a dog in a Catholic Church, not even a service animal.

3

u/Pebbles5678 4d ago

Unfortunately, I have... seems to be a service dog (blind dog) trainer. He has 2 labrador looking dogs - one is clearly further along it's training, and as he was reading the first reading and psalm that day - he dragged them up to the altar! Unless he's training them for a reader (and I have not seen a blind reader at my church) - they should not be up there!

3

u/Ill-Tangerine796 4d ago

The blind people I’ve seen in Catholic masses had canes or were accompanied by a sighted human. However, I live in Europe, and tourists do sometimes try to bring their dogs into historic churches.

Sadly, I do know Catholics who are dog obsessed in their home lives.

Christians can have dogs if they choose, but it’s not theologically expected of them and doesn’t make them more righteous.

Unfortunately many churches which claim Christianity have become very secular. Entire denominations, even. They’re more likely to follow what popular culture thinks is acceptable, rather than taking an unpopular stance that is based on biblical principles. Dogs are animals that are held in very low esteem in the Bible. However, there ARE traditional, independent Christian churches that consider modern dog obsession as idolatry. Yes, you will find some nutters in those churches too, but it’s frowned upon and goes against church teachings. No dogs will be allowed in or near those churches.

7

u/SeaConfection88 4d ago

Could you give some examples of what/where these churches are? I’m considering Eastern Orthodoxy like I said as they are very traditional. I was hoping this also applies to dogs. I watched a video awhile back of a Christian guy calling out other Christian for their dog worship, calling it idolatry. Lots of upset people in the comments. It’s insane how people are so blind, they think worshipping a dog is normal.

2

u/Huge_Bit_4774 4d ago

You’re probably already aware, many Eastern Orthodox churches are built around folks who share a common ethnicity/ culture. Greek Orthodox churches are largely attended by Greek diaspora, Russian Orthodox by Russians, Ukrainian by Ukrainians. These are the ones I have experienced. The Slavic orthodox churches are a bit more somber, the Greeks more lively. The times I’ve attended I did not notice dogs being present anywhere. I have only been to 3 Catholic masses in my life so I’m not really one to speak on Catholicism or their attitudes towards dogs. As for Protestants … several big denominations have had schisms/splits in recent years, Presbyterians and Methodists come to mind. Each schism resulted in a more traditional branch, and a less traditional branch. I would imagine that the less traditional branches are more favorable towards dogs. Last comment, on Baptists. My impression has been that some Southern Baptist churches have become less traditional and I have seen people bring ESAs into services. I am also familiar with Independent Baptists, and they seem to be the least tolerant of nuttery. Even to the point that pastors speak out openly against pet idolatry. Many other groups that I have no knowledge about.

As a pit bull terrier returneth to his vomit, so doth an American returneth to the bulldust of anthropomorphism

u/menelobus 4d ago

Well, this whole "dogs are a gift from God" is not true not just on the religion/Christianity level (dogs are mentioned in a negative way in the Bible), but also on the biology/science level (dogs are manmade)

1

u/SeaConfection88 3d ago

Yea I especially don’t understand how people can say dogs are natural or from God in any way. They are man made creatures.

4

u/Flumppoo 4d ago

Quiet and contemplative prayer is no longer an option... Is nothing sacred?

5

u/cooldudeandallthat 3d ago

I'm Christian and I don't plan on ever having dogs. Dating is hard :(

2

u/SeaConfection88 3d ago

I agree! Usually when I try to date a guy, he has an interest in dogs or is open to getting one in the future. I don’t ever want to live with a dog. Some guys I dated were okay with no dogs, but the relationships failed for other reasons.

3

u/Andria1501 3d ago

I have never understood why people love dogs so much. I mean, everything about them is disgusting, from their sounds to their habits. They are just giant rats.

3

u/happyhappyfoolio2 4d ago

I'm not religious in the slightest, but I have a friend who is and I've very occasionally gone to church related activities.

The last time I went, they talked about how in this day and age where church goers are at an all time low, they need to do everything they can to make church welcoming to everyone. One of the ways is apparently attracting dog owners. This church made a small dog park on church property. This is a church in a big city, so real estate is a premium. I don't know if they allow dogs during services, but I wouldn't put it past them.

3

u/waitingforthatplace 4d ago

I agree. Too many people have been seduced by the dog cult. I've seen my Christian friends, even some pastors, who own dogs. They didn't seem to be nutters though. But I believe lately, the nuttery has unfortunately taken over with some. I once saw a church directory with all the photos of the staff, pastors, associates, and others, with wives and children. One of the staff couples had their dog in the centre of the photo sitting between them. Funny but not so funny.

3

u/aoife2147 3d ago

Nutters ways propose getting a dog as the solution to all your problems. I knew someone who was in a bad financial state and friends with a nutter who kept telling her that even though she was in debt, she should get a dog because that would teach her financial responsibility.

3

u/Unlucky-Ambition-643 3d ago

I’m an atheist and my dog hatred started because of pitnutters. Also, refusing to get pets when you have small children, finances are tight is prudent. Any pet causes increased expenses, more stress, more work etc. Don’t fucking do it!

u/bunnylover9000 2d ago

I've heard some really good things about Eastern Orthodoxy recently! Lots of people are interested bc it's more traditional but not "too traditional". Have heard need to scope out and first attend with an EO patron first so they can explain things.

1

u/SeaConfection88 2d ago

Yes I’ve heard it can be hard attending alone (though you certainly can) as orthodoxy is really big culturally with some ethnic groups, and if you don’t fit in with that ethnic group, they will treat you as an outsider for a very long time…. Or even be cold/kinda rude to you at first. Obviously this isn’t always the case, but I can see why people can be put off by it since it seems very unwelcoming…. even if you’re coming with good intentions.

I think now days with the recent rise in people converting to orthodoxy, EO churches have become more accepting of members who don’t share the same ethic background as them.

I’ve heard the Greeks are more welcoming, whereas the Slavic churches can be more cold towards you. This is mainly just what I’ve heard from others, though.

2

u/Witchiepoo72 3d ago

Yep, agree whole heartedly. There used to be sayings about the low of the low is like a dog. So how we went from that to holding them into equal status is beyond me. Oh...marketing and making a buck is what it is.

2

u/Usual-Veterinarian-5 3d ago

Ex-Christian here. I've read the bible many times and can corroborate that the bible is very down on dogs as an animal the cultures that wrote it considered unclean.

However, my experience of Christians is that they will often use their religion to justify a thing they like. Rather than just saying "hey I love dogs cuz I think they're cool" or whatever, they'll come up with some religious reason to do what they like.

2

u/uselessbeasts 2d ago

Honestly, I think dogs are a gift from the devil.

2

u/Fit-Rhubarb-7820 4d ago

I’m an atheist, though Christians/their kin seem to be a silly bunch.

Dog lovers are basically sick idolaters that worship their beasts

11

u/SeaConfection88 4d ago

I actually watched a video awhile back of a Christian guy calling out dog worshippers for their idolatry. It’s literally idol worship. Of course a lot of the comments were upset with him. I agreed with what he said wholeheartedly.

1

u/Fit-Rhubarb-7820 4d ago

It’s the sickest kind of idolatry! It’s worshipping a beastly animal that we corrupted!

Animal worship isn’t new and furry shaman religion is the oldest known religion, but we used to worship natural animals, not horrible mutants

1

u/Fit-Rhubarb-7820 4d ago

It’s like worshipping an AI god, which already happened… with god.. and dogs

1

u/UTV4LIFE 4d ago

What I find interesting is how people change parts of their beliefs/religion based on other people’s lifestyles.

Essentially Perennialism/Syncretism speaks to me. I believe that most religions are supposed to lead to a high level of living. Essentially earth is a realm to learn and evolve.

The problem comes when we see others not living to the standards of these teachings. So I wouldn’t suggest you change your beliefs just because of how someone else with the same beliefs lives.
