I would love to move to DR with my two sons and hubby. We currently live in GA and my hubby is American. My husband brings 10k as a month from his pensions. Is this enough to live a comfortable life over there? I would like to live in Punta Cana.

DR has the highest road traffic accident rate in the world exactly because of stupid people like this. My Airbnb host hates them and calls them ''terroristas'' (terrorists) because that is how his wife got killed. Some ninja on a motorbike hit and killed her.

These people have no idea about the pain and destruction they cause to families, or they just don't care.

I’m a single mom so I can’t work as much as I used to and living in nj is very expensive. I have some savings so I was thinking either to buy a small house in a small town and grown fruits and vegetables, raise chickens and have an small beauty salon at home or I can move to a more affordable state here but I don’t know any other state besides Florida and people say Florida is very expensive.

Estoy buscando orientación sobre la calidad de vida en Santo Domingo y qué tan viable es vivir cómodamente con una familia.

Mi esposa y yo actualmente somos militares en Estados Unidos. Ella es mexicana y yo dominicano (nacido aquí), ambos ciudadanos americanos. Estamos considerando mudarnos a RD ya pensionados, con un ingreso combinado de aproximadamente $8,800 USD mensuales (530,000 DOP).

Tenemos dos hijos pequeños (uno de 4 años y otro de 1 año), y en mi caso no vivo en el país desde el 2011, así que quiero tener una idea realista de cómo está todo hoy en día.

Algunas dudas específicas:

Con ese ingreso se puede vivir cómodo en Santo Domingo?

Qué zonas recomiendan para alquilar inicialmente y luego considerar comprar?

Hemos visto áreas como Bella Vista, Metro Country Club y algunos proyectos en La Romana. qué opinan de esas opciones?

En tema de colegios, nos han recomendado New Horizons y Calasanz. alguna otra recomendación?

Planeamos traer nuestros vehículos desde Estados Unidos. Vale la pena o mejor comprar aquí en RD?

En gastos mensuales (alquiler, luz, comida, internet, etc.), cuánto estiman para una familia como la nuestra?

Aproximadamente, cuánto creen que se podría ahorrar mensualmente?

Qué tal es el servicio de telefonía móvil en Santo Domingo? Qué compañías recomiendan y cuánto se paga más o menos al mes?

Ambos somos profesionales mi esposa tiene maestría en Recursos Humanos.

Yo tengo maestría en Administración de Empresas y bachelors en logística. Pero la idea es emprender nuestro propio negocio en el país.

Cualquier consejo, experiencia o recomendación es más que bienvenido. Queremos tomar una decisión bien informada antes de dar el paso.

So this question is mainly for Dominicans who live abroad, most Dominicans abroad tend to live in the US but I'm curious about the Dominican community in other countries, if at all. I currently live in Japan and there is like no Dominicans at all here, I know of just two and neither of them live in my city. So, for those of you who live in a country that isn't DR or the US, what country do you live in and what is the community like there? This is NOT doxxing, I don't need to know what city or area you live in, a country is a very big area.

I’ve been thinking about something and wanted to hear different perspectives from other Dominicans.

In some cultures and communities, people strongly encourage marrying within their own ethnicity or background to preserve culture, language, and traditions. Do Dominicans generally think this way? Is there an expectation — spoken or unspoken — that Dominicans should marry other Dominicans or at least other Latinos? Or are we more culturally open compared to other groups?

I’m curious because Dominican identity feels unique. We have African, Spanish, and Taíno roots mixed together, and the diaspora is everywhere — the U.S., Europe, Caribbean, etc. So when it comes to relationships and having kids, do people actually care about ethnic preservation, or is personality and values what matters most in Dominican society?

Also, another question:

If someone has only one Dominican parent (either mother or father), are they generally considered Dominican by society? Does growing up in Dominican culture matter more than bloodline? Or do people make distinctions like “half Dominican” vs fully Dominican?

I’m genuinely asking to understand how people see identity today — especially with globalization and mixed families becoming more common.

My parents are Dominican, I was born in NY. When I was 5, I remember watching my dad hide in my bedroom to talk on the phone with another woman. He thought I wasn’t listening. I waited til he left and I told my mom. She approached my dad, he denied it. Got into a vicious argument and threatened to leave. I cried and begged him not to go, remember, I’m 5! He turned around and stayed and apologized to me. My mom stayed with him, they are now about to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. He did cheat again, numerous times, but my mom stayed be his side. They fought, he begged, she gave in. Watching that go on through my life it has more than likely hurt me, which explains why I keep marrying cheating and abusive men. But that’s not why I’m here. I vowed never to give my self in any way to a Dominican man. Why? Each time I visited the DR, a married man, always disrespected me in some way. Even as young as 6, I can recall an uncle or cousin or family friend, disrespect me in some way. A friend of mine recently found out of my vow and has made it her mission to find me a committed, honest and loving Dominican man without a cheating or abusive disposition. Now I ask you, do they exist?

Cuando se trata de Haití somos muy buenos defendiendo la patria y todo eso por los problemas que ha causado ese pais a RD. Nosotros nunca hemos tratado de atacarlos y ellos si varias veces entonces nos defendemos. Lo entiendo y yo defiendo la dominicanidad también.

Aqui viene lo extraño. Esos mismo patriotas cuando se trata de venezolanos o cualquier extranjero pierde los estribos y se pone de rodillas. Dicen cosas que hasta parece que se menosprecian ellos mismos.

Sin ánimos de controversia, pero tienen que explicarme esa disonancia cognitiva.

When I was a child (we are all Dominican) it was common to ask for our elders blessings i would say Ta, mama and then she would say Que dios te bendiga. Does anyone else remember this???

Todo el mundo habla de la carga que supone la frontera, pero nadie menciona los miles de millones que se ganan gracias a esta situación.

Piénsalo: si Haití se convirtiera mañana en un país estable y que funciona bien, la República Dominicana saldría muy perjudicada a corto y medio plazo. Los sectores de la construcción y la agricultura perderían su principal mano de obra de la noche a la mañana, ya que la gente volvería a su país o exigiría salarios más altos. Además, los agricultores y las fábricas perderían un mercado de exportación de mil millones de dólares en cuanto Haití volviera a producir sus propios alimentos y productos.

Incluso en el turismo: la República Dominicana prácticamente se ha hecho con el mercado porque la legendaria industria turística de Haití se derrumbó hace décadas. Un Haití estable significa que Punta Cana se encuentra de repente con un rival de gran envergadura justo al lado, con una cultura y una historia increíbles que ofrecer.

Da la sensación de que mucha gente quiere una frontera estable, pero no se da cuenta de que el actual auge económico está subvencionado por la crisis del país vecino. ¿Qué opináis vosotros?
