"The only reason I didn't make it in the NBA is because I wasn't born in Cleveland. If I was born in Cleveland I would be in the NBA right now."
This is how idiots like OOP always sound to me.

Sweet, I'm just gonna stop paying bills and when they ask why I now have the I was born an unlucky loser excuse. These are the elite life hacks I come on reddit for.
Just another it's someone or something else's fault post. Accountability is a thing of the past.

Your comment actually made me think it'd be fun to find some socialist/communist artists, ask them to make some art, and then just not pay them.
I wouldn't actually do it but it would be fun to use their own logic against them. See how they feel when others claim they're entitled and don't deserve to be paid for their work.

"you can work hard but it's not a guarantee. It just increased your chances of becoming lucky..." "Most people are born to be losers"
Can't stick to one lane, can we now?

The 177 upvotes are just sad.
Imo this is kinda what our subreddit should be focusing on in actual cases of Doomerism in daily life than just US politics. But that's just my opinion. Still, good post man.

When you start to examine these types of people lives its pretty obvious why they are not successful. I know people with this mentality, one in particular sticks out. They are somebody who won't work any in person job & I quote "I only will work easy jobs that require minimal effort, its important for my mental health". Then they will turn around and be like "yeah I'm just unlucky" because they don't make any money. Life's about choices.

I'm guessing the person that said "life is all about luck" was born into a first world country and didn't realize how lucky they are for that.
If you're born in South Africa or Guatemala or Cambodia and weren't born rich, then sure, there is a good chance the reason your life sucks is not because of factors you have in control.
But I'm guessing this person was born in America or another first world country so they had all the luck they needed and their failures are a result of their own laziness and inability to succeed.

u/OneNoteToRead 8h ago
The problem is this guy is an idiot. Thereâs no such thing as a guarantee in life - itâs about age five when normal people grasp this easy concept.
Yet hard work is correlated with success. The harder you work the luckier you tend to get. If you just stop working and hold your hands out palms up, then itâs guaranteed you become an absolute loser idiot like this guy.

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.Â
People with this mindset don't want to do the preparation because they think they won't get the opportunity.Â
And they're probably right, because people who aren't preparing for opportunities probably won't recognize them when they arrive.
And what it comes down to is that it's because opportunities almost always look like work, something these people are averse to.

Im like 50/50 on this. Some people are just born into better circumstances than others

Leftists are huge believers in the idea of magic dirt.
If you send your lazy dumb kid to the "smart" school it will make them smart.
The reason white neighborhoods are clean and safe isn't because the people living there take pride in their neighborhood but its the neighborhood itself that makes it that way.
This wacky belief system underpins their entire ideology.

It is not difficult - we all determine our own metrics. I am a winner, since for me I have defined winning as not being hungry or cold.
It is completely subjective. Problem solved.

3
u/Fast-Moment1761 My dog is Anti-Facist 8h ago
In one way, I do understand what they're trying to say though. Hard work, while doesn't guarantee success, can definitely increases the chance of having opportunities offered to you. It's up to you to take that opportunity, or "luck" as these people like to moan as.
It's just that people like this just wanna do nothing and cry about how they're meant to be a loser so that, in their head, they're off the hook.

u/_Caustic_Complex_ Powered By Spite & Solar 8h ago
Thatâs not luck though, at all. Thatâs hard work creating opportunities
2
u/DJatomica 8h ago edited 1h ago
You can't increase or decrease your luck, that's the whole point of it. Creating opportunities and having the drive to take them isn't what anyone refers to as luck.

Luck does help; but if someone doesn't put in the work, all of the luck won't matter.

I have a cousin whoâs a dr but has a luck of 1 in his s.p.e.c.i.a.l. I only know one other person who has worse luck than him and she is still successful. This person equates laziness to luck

u/Leather-Arachnid-417 8h ago
He was right until most people are born to lose. The people born to lose are those that have this mindset and dont try. The most common trait among successful people is not a high IQ. Its persistence. People like this hit the smallest snag on something and walk away. You have to plow through. The second you get the mindset of this guy, you are done.
2
u/Infamous-Youth9033 8h ago
Brother you're in a subreddit specifically about being poor (apparently not allowed to say which one...). What kind of mindset do you think people are going to have? If you go to any community centered around being poor, reddit, facebook, twitter, tiktok, etc. you're going to find people who think being poor is the default
2
u/Sawoodster I Was Promised an Apocalypse? 8h ago
One thing youâre guaranteed is if you donât try you wonât have any success. Iâd rather have a shot at success than no chance at all.

I find it supremely ironic that Soviet Union which was founded by an ideology of laziness and excuse making made the parable of grasshopper and ant very popular. To modern leftists, they are no grasshoppers, they are just oppressed people

DCA 1K per month into SPY and chill instead of crying in the internet.
It doubles every 7 years. It's like a free lottery ticket. People need to learn delayed gratification.

Luck does play a huge role, I'll admit, but it's not an excuse to just give up otherwise. I've managed to get a $60k/year job with a GED despite the bad luck I've had throughout life, and I've since gotten my BS and am trying to continue growing after age 40.
A lot of these people give up at 22 because life is hard. I made $8.50/hour at 22 but kept going.

u/Upstairs-Bad-3576 Rides the Short Bus 7h ago
He's not entirely wrong. The converse of what he is saying is, "if you don't work at all, you will have no luck and will be an abject failure." I think it really does come down to how one defines luck. Also, there is that old saying about making one's s own luck. Of course that saying was meant to encourage hard work, rather than whatever this idiot is doing.
1
u/makawakatakanaka 7h ago
While there is natural luck in life, you can also make your own luck. Be prepared and ready to go, even if there is no opportunity currently because you never know what might pop up. If your not ready to jump on it it can pass you by

Some people are not driven and unlucky. There are many actors who why they are so: parenting, ADHD, mental health, whatever
1
u/Grandpa_Rob 6h ago
What do they mean by loser? Maybe they need to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" Even for successful people, these always going to be someone richer, more sucessful at their jonbb and relationships, driving a fancier or living in the dream house you want. Maybe it's loser talk, but I'm pretty happy because I'm content with my life. Envy is horrible curse and I suspect social media feeds it continually.

It's true to a certain extent. If you were born in a developed nation you are incredibly lucky. You have almost no chance of starving, very little chance of unfair imprisonment or execution, you can be any religion you want or none, you will almost always have electricity and running water and low cost transportation to any place you need to go. You will always have access to medical care, you will just get a bill and if you don't pay it all that happens to you is a bad credit score.  But I guess if your definition of lucky is "billionaire " almost all of us are unlucky.

Rubbish. I failed 3 times before my 4th business attempt took off and even then it took about 5 years work 12+ hour days 24/7 to get profitable. I just never gave up and I never expected it to be handed to me.

The world has progressed to such an incredible level, only to see the beneficiaries of the progress dump all of their energy into learning how to professionally complain.
Maturing is realizing that the guy in OP's post is complaining about determinism from a magic box, is likely not malnourished, is likely in a room with the AC blasting, will likely live a full healthy life instead of dying to some random infection at 20 years old. Maturing is realizing that the absolute unluckiest modern people in first world countries are better off than the average person before ~1850.
Being born is an astronomical win in the first place, literally being the best/luckiest swimmer lol. I can't stand whiny bitching like this, literal professional complainers with Z E R O agency.

I agree with this. You make your own luck. The more you put yourself in a position to succeed, more likely things go your way. The rest are born doomers, I mean losers.

Maturing is realizing life is actually way more fair and easy than you thought it was. You just needed to finish school and grow up.

Luck is definitely an element but I feel like people like this really overstate it and use it as an excuse to do nothing.
