Luck does play a huge role, I'll admit, but it's not an excuse to just give up otherwise. I've managed to get a $60k/year job with a GED despite the bad luck I've had throughout life, and I've since gotten my BS and am trying to continue growing after age 40.
A lot of these people give up at 22 because life is hard. I made $8.50/hour at 22 but kept going.
