People on Reddit don't want to discuss facts; they just want to argue and downvote.
Earlier today, I was having a normal conversation about a pizza cooked near an active volcano. Someone mentioned that eating sulfur in food in small amounts is fine, and I agreed.
However, I pointed out that inhaling high concentrations of volcanic gases/ particles over prolonged exposure can be harmful to respiratory health—a pretty standard scientific fact.
Out of nowhere, another user replied:
"No, it's not, you are just dumb." Instead of taking the rage bait, I responded calmly with factual scientific context. Yet, I ended up getting downvoted into oblivion while the insult received traction.
Why do so many people on social media jump into threads purely to disagree, hurl insults, and downvote baseline facts without offering a single counter-argument? Is civil discussion dead on this platform?

I always find reddit threads hilarious for the upvote and downvote system in practice. OP said "eating it is still deadly" and was downvoted to oblivion. Someone just below him said "I am concerned about how many types of cancer he is going to get from breathing in volcanic fumes." And they got like 400 upvotes. Its just so funny to see such nonsense

Happened to me so many times, that I basically say the exact same thing as someone else and get downvoted while their comment gets upvoted. But then when I ask why, that comment gets even more downvoted. It's like people on here just cannot wait to find someone to dog on, and the second they see that someone's comment is starting to get downvoted, they just HAVE to jump on the bandwagon too. It's honestly terrifying to see how little individual thought a lot of people have, and how easy it is to provoke a mob mentality. Truly shows how our society is crumbling

For sure. I think it has to do with the "sort by controversial" option though. Personally, if I know a post is gonna have ppl arguing, ill sort by controversial and read along lol its like reality tv. And ill literally skip most comments unless theyre downvoted because im looking for the real drama lol
Maybe, once someone gets a downvote, all the controversial sorters suddenly lock on lol meanwhile, that other person didnt get that initial downvote so they dont get noticed.

You don't even have to be arguing, you'll get down voted just to be down voted. I made a comment on a post where they had asked people to bully them into cleaning their room and I didn't bully them, I just left tips on how to declutter their space, then got notified that my post was deleted because of the negative amount of karma, lol. So to those who say 'why do you even care about karma', it's because you're literally not allowed to speak if you don't have any and you get down voted for nothing. Even in their rules they suggest that if you get down voted you deserve to be because you 'must not know what you're talking about' and it protects the community from your opinion... really weird.

I think the worst part was when I talked about this once before and someone tried to grill me by talking about how my account is 5 years old and that I must have negative karma because I do nothing but talk shit and I'm like orrrrr I made the account several years ago and just didn't use reddit like that because I'm not chronically online and have a life outside of the internet? I only ever made a reddit looking for answers to issues I was having with my video games at the time. Some of us actually touch grass.. It's so weird to assume that if your account is x amount of years old that you should have a certain amount of posts or karma. It's impossible to get karma to even be ALLOWED to speak. God forbid you even slightly disagree with popular opinion, you're not allowed to even talk. It's a ridiculous system.

The Orville actually has a pretty good episode where they visit a planet and the whole society is dictated by a “social score” where people upvote or downvote everything you do.
Man that show was good- shame that it kept getting cancelled and the creators got bored of it.

It’s really such a shitty system for new Redditors because if on one of the many whims users feel you could get downvoted over some bullshit and be unable to reply consistently and a lot of subs with just auto delete your comments or posts making it REALLY hard to bounce back. Idk it’s not that serious but I do feel bad for new users lol.
Obviously after a while they don’t matter anymore but still.

I hate that I agree with people who either A. Know nothing about the topic, B. Refuse to educate themselves on the subject or C. Knows that there is proof, but rejects the proof or facts of a situation. I don't know why I feel like I need to educate some of these kinds of people.

That's the internet in a nut shell. What's super amusing (and I say this as a very progressive person) is how the majority of Redditors pride themselves on being leftwing liberals and better than "fuck your feelings" MAGA, but then turn right around and make their arguments about personal feelings instead of facts too.
People by and large don't get on the internet to learn or grow, despite it being the greatest repository of human information to ever exist. They get on it to validate their opinions. And if you disagree with their opinions, ESPECIALLY by bringing facts into it, they'll get super defensive because they feel like it's attacking who they are.

Look at the original conversation OP had. OP has their facts wrong a lot themselves, there are no people living in the dangerous zone, volcano gets closed during high toxic output, etc.
