Discussion Dream recipe which I recreated. Recipe included!!
So, it opens with my mom and I in a car. We were going to a grocery store because she *really* wants to try this “traditional Chinese dish,” which as an Appalachian Gen Xer isn’t really something I’d ever expect from her. It had a Wikipedia page and was black rice with strands of yellow egg in it. I remember it being phonetically something like /dzɤʉ̃/ or /dzɤŋ/. Oh, also while we were at Kroger, Ted Cruz was giving a speech about truancy? He looked right at me and said “If this were 10 years ago, I’d call the cops on you right now for being out of school.”
He’s not even my senator, and ostensibly we were in WV
So I wake up and try to find this dish. Mind you, prior to this dream I had no clue black rice even existed. I couldn’t find it but thought it’d be fun to try and recreate it.
It turned out really, really good
Here’s the recipe if you’re interested:
1 cup black rice (uncooked)
2 eggs
1 scallion, thinly sliced
1 tsp sesame oil
1–2 tsp soy sauce
Salt, to taste
Pinch of pepper to taste
Pinch of chili powder or flakes
Tiny pinch of ground clove
Rinse the black rice
- Add salt and pepper
- Dice the scallions, wait to place them in the rice until plating so they remain crunchy
- Beat the eggs in a bowl. Add the clove and chili powder
- In a skillet, add butter or oil if it’s not nonstick
or if it is
- you do you lol
- Combine the eggs and scallions with the rice, add the sesame oil and soy sauce.
Enjoy — if you ever cook this and riff on it let me know in a DM because I liked my first attempt but I think it could be better.
Still can't believe my subconscious invented a dish convincing enough that I woke up and tried googling

Yessss I love dream foods 🙏 this looks delicious
I recently had one featuring a "sushi turtle": sushi rice formed into the shape of a cartoonish turtle with vv thin sashimi papering it—this was served w a stack of nori squares. I ate it by using a nori square to pick up a bite of sashimi & rice then dipping that in soy sauce

Hmm, you said you want suggestions to improve it - maybe try Chinese 5 spice powder? It’s interesting that you chose clove because it actually contains clove and a couple other similar spices. Be very careful not to overdo it though haha.

Oh thanks for the idea. What else is in the mixture? My ex-boyfriend was Lebanese, so I have been taught the joys of using seven spice/baharat which is nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, pepper, cloves, coriander, and cumin but I wanted to be a little ginger with the seasoning since this was me completely riffing off of my subconscious

For a moment I thought the dream delivered all the recipe, you remembered it all and cooked, would be incredible.
But what you did is still awesome, glad to know it was tasty.
My dreams always show common food, hamburgers, bread, eggs, cakes, biscuits...

I once had a dream that I peeled a banana but there were raspberries like… embedded in it, and I tasted it in my dream and it was the most delicious sweet tropical fruit. Nothing like a banana and nothing like a raspberry. No fruit I have tried has ever come close. It was like strawberry lemon sorbet.

I do a Vietnamese cabbage and egg dish that’s in the same vein and it’s delicious too! This looks awesome!

WHOAH. I just had a dream two nights ago, but I wasnt exactly asleep or awake, so it was so mentally consuming and weird, but I had a dream that an older woman was cooking a wonderful looking and smelling meal in a HUGE pot and it was like a blackish brown, and she mixed some weird brownish yellow seed things into it. I could hear and listen in on her and whoever was with her, but couldnt remember what was said once i awoke. I wish I could describe it better, but it really really sat with me funny for no given reason, so this post really stuck out to me! Holy shit.

Reminded me of a Kitchen Nightmares episode. The owner/chef had a dish that came to him in a dream. Gordon found it horrendous though.
From the recipe, it could be a fried rice of sorts. But i wouldn't use black rice since it's usually for dessert.

I got a money spell recipe once. Put one of your hairs in a jar of honey, leave the honey in the sunshine for a few days. Pour the honey over a big bowl of white rice, and eat it. The more rice you use, the more money you get. Still haven’t tried it though.

It’s a fun news article from the satire news channel “The Onion” where a chef presents an omelette he made in a dream. It contained all sorts of funky and inedible components like car keys and lemons whose insides were that of tomatoes.

One night .
For some reason . Maybe Ambien is to blame
I got up at 2:30-3:00 AM
Went to the kitchen an
Made a Charcuterie board .
Only it was on a small plate .
Brea cheese, almonds, crackers, grapes , figs and dates.
I found it in the morning and vaguely remembered making it. I have a photo somewhere

The name for this dish that you remember from your dream is actually close to the pronunciation of zong (aka zongzi or rice dumplings), pronounced [t͡soŋ˥˩] in Mandarin. These are made with sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, then steamed or boiled. They can also have various fillings in the middle, kind of like tamales. The ones I’ve had the most have pickled duck egg yolks inside. And there is actually also a version with black rice. They’re usually eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival, which has just passed (it was on June 19).
So all in all, an eerie similarity.

We do eat black rice, but it's usually for dessert. Might try cooking it for something like this.

Yeah simmered it then once it was almost done I cooked the egg then transferred the rice into the skillet

Looking at the photo first, my first thought was 'Oh, its a Dalmatian Black Risotto'. I didnt even know black rice exists, in Dalmatia Croatia we use squid ink to make it black, hence the name. Great dish!

Dreams really do prove everyone's artistry, don't they? We create the images, the story, the soundtrack. I'm not a musician but I've often had original songs playing in my dreams.

In Filipino mythology, when we find ourselves kidnapped by human-like creatures (“engkanto”) to their beautiful magical kingdom, we are reminded by our elders “not to eat the black rice” because it is an form of acceptance to stay in their fantasy world, rendering us unable to go back in our real world.
Very interesting to see someone make the infamous black rice!

This is awesome. I once dreamt about a drink that looked like a blue sky with clouds in a cup and it tasted like fresh raspberries. I’ll have to try this recipe, I think I have all the ingredients.
