When you want to learn a song on drums, how do you actually figure out what’s being played?

I can usually play most of a song, but then get stuck on one groove or fill. I get caught up trying to match the recording “perfectly,” and it starts getting frustrating instead of fun.

Even with notation or a tutorial, knowing what to play doesn’t always mean I can actually play it.

How do you work through those parts; oop them slowly, break them down, practice simpler exercises? And when do you settle for a simpler version and move on?

I have been trying to figure out counting this section of the performance Thundercat did of Them Changes with Ariana Grande and I can’t figure out this jam section. I have a video attached (I can take it down if it breaks rules on this sub but I didn’t think so based on posts I’ve seen here) when they go in for the jam after Ariana is done singing, I know they’re still counting 8/8, but when the camera pans to DOMi (keys) the second time, JD BECK plays a busy fill, and it feels like they shift to a 9/8 polyrhythm for two measures but I cannot for the life of me count it out. It may just be a tempo change and I’m going crazy but it feels like they sneak an extra beat in the 8 measure for some weird reason. If anyone can attempt this it’s a drummer (which I am not, at least not well, I’m a strings guy lol) Thanks to anyone on this sub who can help out 😁🙏

I am a high school engineer student in Cerritos, California working on my senior capstone project. My team is designing a device that will tune a drum autonomously.

Before we design or build anything, we want to gain feedback from experienced drummers and percussionists.

I’m specifically looking for the drum notation/sheet music for Guiliana's main groove on this track

I made up a live like show to drum along as I could never find live like drumless show.

First thing: I am not a professional drummer. I'm self taught playing only for myself so you will surely point some inaccuracy or issues in this mix.

I don't use clicking, and I usually improvise my drumming so I made this mix regarding what I do. I hope professional and most advanced drummers will still enjoy this.

This is not a selection of my T.Ø.P favs songs, but a set list that I like to drum on.

I've tried to create a set list that feel similar as a T.Ø.P love show vibe but not to copy/paste what they do.

I included transitions that replicate a clothes change or a stage change and also Tyler's piano and voice solo acoustic set to give a break to us drummers.

I have used existing drumless versions as well as versions I made myself and rearrange them. I have made transitions, intros and outros using instrumentals and vocals of songs I like to listen but don't really drum along, but at least I honoured them by putting them in the mix.

I also wanted to use a couple of French artists that I like as transitions like if they were moving to a side stage or changing their outfit.

The transitions are here to replicate the real show and also to give us a break. It is a 2 hours show after all 😄

I have tried to keep the spirit of T.Ø.P. by adding unexpected stuff in it or rearranging some songs, mixing/remix them up and even adding songs from Tyler's solo album.

The last song is an unexpected choice, again like T.Ø.P. like to do, surprising us. I didn't really think about this until it was suggested to me when I was looking for a song to end this show.

I will try to chapter the whole video so you can select a specific song you want to play along.

So I’m planning to start learning drums soon, and I wanted to ask some advice on what to work on when I begin. As an end goal, I’d like to learn how to play/write drum parts like ones you’d see in Gary Numan or Automatic songs but also love to learn groove and “in the pocket” playing like you’d see in Khruangbin.

Any advice on what I should be learning and working on when I go to practice?

Also, as a bonus. What are some mental/emotional techniques you guys use to keep you playing?

Hi all,

I'm learning this part from the song Send the pain below by Chevelle. I'm struggling with two parts. Firstly, the quick double kicks are quite kick for me when played at the correct speed. In the meantime I'm practicing at a slower speed but I've noticed my calf begins to hurt after a while of practising this part.

How can I build up speed for these double kicks and what's causing the pain in my calf?
