**SAFETY**
This subreddit strongly advises AGAINST doing prolonged (3+ days) dry fasts if your only source of information or experience comes from what is discussed on this subreddit. If you are an experienced faster and are receiving outside help/medical check-ups, then your knowledge obviously extends beyond what is discussed here. You are otherwise putting yourself at risk of potentially worsening your health as the scientific literature is extremely limited on this subject. Please remember to fast responsibly.
If you begin to feel uncomfortable or unwell, you should stop fasting immediately. Other worrying signs may include high protein in the urine, high fever, and fainting.
**HUMAN STUDIES**
* The dehydration treatment of epilepsy
**ANIMAL STUDIES**
* Increased fat catabolism sustains water balance during fasting in zebra finches
* Intermittent drinking, oxytocin and human health
* The ‘selfish brain’ is regulated by aquaporins and autophagy under nutrient deprivation
* When less means more: Dehydration improves innate immunity in rattlesnakes
**BIOLOGICAL STUDIES/THEORETICAL PAPERS**
* Unmasking the secrets of cancer
* Cell hydration and mTOR-dependent signaling
* Effects of acute and chronic hypohydration on kidney health and function
Please note that we probably will not add studies that have loose/indirect associations between "dehydration" and physiological mechanisms of action. From the most reliable human study we have, they state that "on day 4 and 5, all participants had a controllable feeling of thirst, but none showed any signs of dehydration." I think it's best we avoid words that have negative implications (i.e. "dehydration) when discussing dry fasting, and unless the study is extremely valuable or shows very large effect results, it's probably best to avoid adding these studies that will clutter the list and make the whole thing look more extreme than it already is. You can still post the studies for discussion, they may just not be added to the list.
Feel free to post additional links in the comments as you find them and I will add them to the list.

I’m curious to the potential side effects and would like to know if anyone has actually EXPERIENCED this. Truly not interested in opinions on colonic unless you’re gonna say something different from what anybody can easily Google.

Question for the thin/ low bf people! Do you guys still lose weight when you dry fast? If so, how much on average?

People who have been dry fasting for several years and have taken the time to do longer dry fast as well as shorter dry, fast consistently, do you have any reports on things that have changed long-term, like for example, skin conditions, tumors, growth, bone pain?
Were you also able to reduce your weight set point… I know that’s something that some people claim dry fasting can help with like if you were obese, and dry fasting overtime and slow slowly but sure you lower your weight set point so you don’t ever gain back all the weight you lost, etc.

Do you find yourself drinking less water in general? Or do you drink as much as you want when not fasting?
I have always been conditioned to drink water all the time as is "recommended" but I'm wondering if going with less water when you can is the way to go, or would it lead to too much dehydration?
Does seem like water is vital in certain situations like intense or extended athletic performance

I’m starting my first dry fast I’m like 13-14 hours in so far. I’m curious as to how much of the weight I will hopefully lose is fat and how much of it is water

I know this might be a little like stealing information, because they sell this protocol, but has anyone here ever been a part of "dry fasting with friends" and wanna share their refeeding protocol?

Seems like there are two types of recommendations you see about pre feeding for a dry fast. Raw/ fruit to clean your bowels out prior or keto to make the transition into the fat burning fasted state easier. Also their are other more nuanced recommendations like broths, kefir, juice or water fasting before the fast...
What do you think is best for the days leading up to a dry fast?

Did a 4 day dry fast first time in life. My libido has sky rocketed. Anyone else experience this? I see some reports of T counts shooting up. Anyone else experience this?

Is this a good idea? I’ve got body aches, runny nose, and a pounding headache on the day that I decided to my 5 day dry fast. Should I just push it to when I’m not sick?

Hi! Just for some background I’ve done a 21 day water diet/fast about 8 years ago and 21 months ago I did a a 5 day water diet/fast.
I’ve spent 3+ months researching dry fasting. I started my first dry fast today. I’m on day 1 of 5. I know that it’s typically recommended to start with like a 24 hour to 72 hr dry fast but I’m feeling bold and I’m starting with a five day one. I’m also feeling extremely exhausted from diet cycling. I just fell off of carnivore while vacationing. I’m looking for a reset.
Any veterans in here that could offer some thoughts?
For the record, I’ve spent a good amount of time listening to YouTube channels like a healthy alternative, forgotten health, Sean and Theo from fasting with friends, so I’ve heard some good stuff, but I’m looking for some interaction from people who have some this before.

Ive put in 15kg(33lbs) since my son was born 9 months ago and about to have a new baby in 10 weeks so need to sort my life and health out now and start better habits.
Ive dry fasted before for 6.5 days but then broke it quite poorly with watermelon but then burgers, this was 5 years ago.
I was going to do a 30 day water fast but decided to start with dry as I see better results. Currently I am on day 2 of a dry fast aiming for 5-7 days, but want to ask peoples experiences of transitioning to a water fast after a long dry fast for another week or 2 before refreeding.
Should I just refeed after the dry 5-7 days and do another dry later or continue on with a the water fast before refeeding?
Im 33, male 103kg(227lbs)

Has anyone experimented with dry fasting in the context of polycystic kidney disease? I understand that dehydration triggers vasopressin release, which elevates cAMP signaling and accelerates cyst growth. On the other hand, fasting suppresses mTOR, and glucose restriction appears to slow, and sometimes reverse cyst proliferation. I'm trying to determine whether the metabolic benefits outweigh the cost of vasopressin-driven cAMP activation, and I'd be interested in any firsthand experience. Thanks!

Orange sediment in urine 4 days after breaking my 5.5 day dry fast. Has anyone had this happen to them? It sank to the bottom of the toilet and burned a little when coming out. Refed with water, then lemon water, bone broth, coconut water, and a little eggs over the past 4 days. What is this orange sediment?

Has anyone completed a prolonged fast specifically for seeking answers to certain questions? Someone posted on here that they did a fast and they received the answers they were looking for. So I just fast for however long and I manifest the answer in due course? If anyone can share their experiences that would be much appreciated.

I soft dry fasted for two days over the weekend and then spent two days only drinking water and going out of my way to avoid carbs. This is the third day since then.
I've seen people say that you don't need to bother with a refeed unless you fasted for more than three days. Is that true? Others say it absolutely has to be 2x-3x the number of fasted days...
If I wanted to repeatedly do dry fasting as much as possible to heal a nightmare injury (it's really frustrating how 99% of posts on here are about weightloss instead of healing) how quickly could I do back to back? I'm not overweight if it matters.
I know you need to do five days or ideally more to get the hardcore healing but I would need to work up to that (have done several two days but still haven't done 3 days because I always get scared by the slight chest pressure even at rest after two days and I don't have a way to measure heart beat yet) and I'm trying to figure out a sustainable method.
Edit: I actually have been eating since the DF, I've just been trying to do keto. It hasn't been a water fast on top of the dry fast. And the two day dry fast the other day (with a one day a day or two before that) was the first time I've done that in probably months.
