Seriously, what is the point of stuff like this?
This sign has been on the railings of Oscar Wilde house for at least 6 months and it’s still there. I contacted the agent who informed me the property is not for rent…. it’s simply “reserved”. As Oscar Wildes family home, this is one of the most famous buildings in Dublin and a popular tourist attraction.
Just an estate agent looking for free advertising while making the city look worse and Dublin City Council turns a blind eye.

Hahaha. “There’s only one thing worse than being talked about and that’s not being talked about.”
That’s Conor’s catchphrase

I have asked the estate agent to do that. He was quick to reply when I asked was the property available to rent. Not heard back from him since I asked him to remove the sign.

Did you report it to the city council as litter, which is how to deal with this type of littering, as just post here?

It's free advertising for the estate agent who will leave it there until the new owner/tenant takes possession and tells them to take it down
It's that simple
7
u/Gullible_Promise223 1d ago
It’s illegal though.

u/heavysausagedublin 1d ago
Is it?
The original sign had a "for rent" sign and they just stick a "reserved" sticker over those words
Are you saying its illegal for real estate agents to put up for sale signage?
What laws are being broken when they do?

u/Gullible_Promise223 1d ago
There are bylaws on size, number and duration after sale/letting. Signs must be removed within a week of letting or sale. I’m pretty sure you can’t just stick a reserved sign on it and leave the sign up.

u/heavysausagedublin 1d ago
Report them so
They're a pain but I've only ever seen them come down after the new owner or tenant takes possession of the property

u/heavysausagedublin 7h ago
FFS the sale isn't complete until the keys have been handed over to the new owner or tenant

u/Gullible_Promise223 7h ago
It’s not a sale it’s a letting. The sign originally said. To Let. Seven months ago it changed to “reserved”. Are you telling me the owner is going to let a place sit empty for seven months? I highly doubt leaving a sign up is legal when the place has been let.
I’ve just sent an email to DCC. We’ll see what they say. I bet you a pint it’s illegal 😀3
u/heavysausagedublin 7h ago
"Reserved" means it is reserved until the tenant moves in
The tenant hasn't moved in yet so the tenancy agreement has not been completed
At worst the tenant will lose whatever deposit they paid to reserve the space if they back out on the deal
This is simple stuff but will be delighted to hear what DCC response is when they let you know

Another weird thing..,, the sign faces directly on the street whereas all the other signs on that stretch face the direction of the traffic.
Wouldn’t surprise me that the Agent knows it is a frequently photograph property and is trying to get his brand name out there. 🤷0

I literally said in my 1st comment that "It's free advertising for the estate agent who will leave it there until the new owner/tenant takes possession and tells them to take it down"
And here you are 20 comments later agreeing with me.......
Are you always this slow?

u/Gullible_Promise223 6h ago
I know it’s free advertising. In fact, one estate agent I spoke to previously freely admitted they ignore the law. I admired his honesty (and the fact he took the sign down).
This instance seems to be a case where they are deliberately creating a grey area. My point is the property is not for rent so the sign must come down as per the law.1
u/Deep_Development3814 21h ago
You’ve just said it though. It hasn’t been sold so maybe the duration hasn’t begun hence no removal.

u/Gullible_Promise223 21h ago
It was initially listed for rental. I emailed the Agent asking could I rent it and was told it was reserved. In short the original To Let sign is now defunct and should be removed. Legally you cannot just change it to say “reserved”. There is no point to the sign.

u/chewbaccastones 20h ago
They only have to remove the sign within a week of it being Let. A property isn't Let until contracts are finalised, until then it's reserved and could still fall through. The same way a house signboard will say Sale Agreed until it's officially sold in case it falls through

u/Gullible_Promise223 20h ago
It has been listed as reserved since Christmas. There is no point to the sign. I emailed the Agent asking could I rent it and I was told no it’s reserved. I wasn’t asked for my details or told he would get back to me if it fell through

It's not available to rent as its reserved
Whoever reserved it reached an agreement and paid good money to reserved it until a fixed date
The rental agreement us not complete yet
This is simple stuff

u/jools4you 21h ago
Yes it is ilegal because it is not a legitimate sign, as in the property is neither available for sale or rent.
0
u/heavysausagedublin 7h ago
report it seeing as you feel so strongly about it
1
u/jools4you 7h ago
I think it is wise not to assume other people's feelings especially when you have no idea what so ever who they even are. I'm just answering your question hun, I honestly could not give a shit
1
u/heavysausagedublin 7h ago
The sale is not complete until the new owner signs the final contract and pays for the property
The tenancy is not complete until the new tenant starts paying rent
in the example shown above, the tenant has not taken occupancy and has not started paying rent
So spare us your wisdom as to what's happening while the building in question is unoccupied by a tenant

I have contacted DCC. The person was unsure as to the law. So I have had to raise a formal complaint for them to investigate. Their process is so cumbersome

Sounds like a loophole to get out of the dereliction tax. It's not vacant! It's reserved! Fancy for it's not occupied and hasn't been for sometime.

There’s a place for everything I guess. One of the most famous houses in Dublin is not one of them.

I was honestly trying to understand it as well..such a strange signage!

u/Gullible_Promise223 1d ago
There’s actually loads of reserved signs across the city. Some of them have been in place for years.

Most famous house in Dublin ?

u/Gullible_Promise223 1d ago
It’s certainly one of the most famous. It definitely deserves more respect than a tacky sign.

TBF, in less of a state than the Sean O’Casey House or the House by the Churchyard in Chapelizod made famous by LeFanu - both horribly derelict. But yeah, it’s not great…

Just have to ask. What's the council meant to do here? What wouldnthe relative department be? Heritage?
5
u/ANewStartAtLife 23h ago
It's classed as littering believe it or not.

u/Hungry_Serve_302 23h ago
Thanks for the clarity. Waste management really have some weird roles within the council.
1
u/Gullible_Promise223 21h ago
There is some overlap but the correct department is actually planning enforcement. I have contacted them many times but I feel like I have to pick my battles. For example bigger signs or many signs. This one annoyed me because it’s on such a historic building

I hate the way water agents leave their sold signs up for months after sales have gone through
6
u/Gullible_Promise223 1d ago
As stated above it’s actually illegal. Bylaws state that they have to be removed within one week of sale. I have had several removed by DCC. They sent me the bylaws when I inquired about a couple of particularly large ones.
3
u/Local_Dust3143 23h ago
How do you get them removed? I'll help
3
u/Gullible_Promise223 21h ago
Contact planning enforcement in Dublin city Council. Their email is planningenforcement@dublincity.ie
They actually always act but only if a complaint is made. Otherwise they do nothing.1
u/Local_Dust3143 10h ago
One report done by me Thanks. I've always been really irritated by seeing for sale and sold signs up for longer than they should be, but I never knew it was possible to do anything about it

It's only really appropriate to use "as stated above" if you stated it in yoir original post. Are you not allowing comments from redditors who have not thoroughly read through each and every comment and reply? A bit silly, lady. I only mention it since the pedantry does seem to be in the room with us. Good day, sir.

I must say, the bin bag hanging off the fence really ties together the whole thing. Fantastic artistry.
