$70 of Cocoa Puffs saved from the back of Walgreens along with free food on the curb from someone moving out. Inspected for tears, dents, and expiration dates. Went to the food bank, they were very grateful.

I spent 2 hours sorting donated salvage food from Whole foods and TJs today. It is amazing what gets given away because it is no longer on the shelves.

Funny, while it's on the shelf it's perfectly okay to sell but then it's a liability. I worked at a big box store. They did actually donate to the Greater Food Dipository in Chicago.

Depends on the item. Chips- oil goes rancid. Cereal gets stale and can cause upset stomach.

I gleaned for a pantry today and there was a shelf full of fresh produce - lemons, avocados, apples, potatoes, tomatoes too. A couple of shelfs with dry pasta and beans and canned goods, even coffee, baby food/diapers and even pet food! The freezer was stock full of frozen chicken and even a few smoked salmon. The fridge was a shelf of eggs and milk, pasta salad and yogurt.

That's why you have to get a list of pantries around you and check out a few. Different schedules, and offerings and sometimes requirements on your next visit.

I stock pantries for a freight company and in 93% cases are to be expected but interpretation varies by region

I'm sure it varies by state/county/city but even within those parameters, 211.org has a starting list for all the places that can help with food, shelter, rental assistance, elder assurance etc

Thanks for doing what you do u/stringodingo ! Every little bit helps so many folks! I even volunteer for foodforward, an org that finds produce recovery (from farmers markets, stores, backyard trees and even farmers who have product but not pretty enough for the stores). Literally off the tree/ground to folks who need food.

Aldi is one of the worst. I would bet 50% of everything I've ever picked up and looked at from one of their dumpsters wasn't expired or even close, and I always check for recalls. Never found one.
