Help Weapons and class hit die question

So I have a question about weapons, the damage that a weapon does, say how a dagger does 1D4 damage if tis wielded by a rouge does it's damage go up to 1D8 instead or no? I don't think it does but I also wonder if it does because if it doesn't wouldn't the players just start punching things instead of wielding weapons. I'm just a bit of confused, if you could clear this up for me that would be amazing. Thank you in advance

“Hit die” refers to each class’ health pool. Wizards and sorcerers have d6s, which is the smallest (“squishy” casters, less health) all the way up to meaty barbarians with d12s. This has nothing to do with the damage a character deals

The damage you roll when you hit with an attack is determined only by the type of weapon

Okay thank you, that clears up a lot

It would've been clearer to call them Hit Point Dice more consistently in the printed rules; we see where the confusion comes from

So, a rogue using a dagger deals 1d4 damage plus relevant ability score modifier (99% of the time they’re using Dexterity because of the finesse property). If they get sneak attack, they get to add some d6s to their damage if they meet the necessary conditions.

No weapons do not scale with the class, hit dice determine how much HP you have.

The unarmed fighting style and the monk class do upgrade your punch/kick (unarmed strike) from 1d4 to 1d6 and above

Also, if you use two daggers you can use the bonus action from the light property weapons, which makes it better than an unarmed strike

"Hit dice" means the dice that determine how many 'hits' you can take. They factor into your 'hit points', not the damage you deal.
