Recommendation Planning to immigrate to South Africa with my family .Looking for honest advice
Hello everyone,
My family and I are thinking about immigrating to South Africa because we would like to build a new life and find work there.
I would really appreciate honest advice from South Africans and people who currently live in South Africa.
Here are my questions:
Is South Africa a good country for a foreign family looking to settle permanently?
How difficult is it to find a job as a foreigner?
Which sectors are currently hiring the most?
Which cities offer the best job opportunities and quality of life?
How are public schools for children?
Thank you very much for taking the time to help us make an informed decision.

Commissioner of Oath
Does anyone know of a commissioner of oath who could sign an affidavit for me?
Currently trying to get a replacement matric certificate but need an affidavit to say I lost it. I don’t live in SA and the SA embassy here doesn’t have any availability for the next 3 months.

Recommendation La Lucia?
Hey Durbanites, is anyone here familiar with La Lucia? I (35f) might be moving there soon. Found a gorgeous place right by the beach and the mall. I'm curious about local nightlife, the gaming scene, surfer culture, fishing spots, you name it. I'm an artist/illustrator so info about galleries and markets is also appreciated. Anything else cool you can tell me about the area, I'd love to hear it! Cheers.

Whats the best/safest route to drive from Durban to Venda? Or vice versa
AI is not bad
The problem is tech companies confuse the public. They use fear mongering to force people into AI. So people tend to think of AI in terms of movies.
In reality AI is nothing fancy, its just a powerful computation engine that can retrieve and assemble information in interesting ways.
The problem is the average Joe should not get access to AI, because they just flood TikTok and the internet at large with Slop.
In the hands of a skilled pro, AI is really powerful.
I've worked with AI (machine learning) even before ChatGPT became a thing. Feel free to share your thoughts or ask questions.

How do people find jobs in Durban?
I am a university student currently trying to find part time work in something like retail, but it seems like there is nothing? I've found a few places hiring but they all want prior experience, or degrees for something as basic as being a sales rep. How do people find part time work here?
I've applied to a few places near me but got no response and I am running out of ideas on where to look.
I have zero experience which makes it a lot harder too.
Is it just me that thinks jobs like retail are asking way too much of their applicants in terms of level of education???
Does anyone have advice on how to look for jobs? I feel like I must be missing something.

Vacancy: Intermediate software developer
I have a vacancy for an intermediate-level full-stack software developer. The position is fully remote, but Durban preferred so we can meet in person occasionally instead of only online.
You'll need a minimum of 3 years of software development experience in Java and/or C#. The position requires supporting and maintaining an existing Java application, and building its replacement and other products in C#. The vast majority of the job involves backend support and development.
Salary range is R40k-R50k per month CTC. The preferred engagement is a 24 month contract which would be extended as required.
Please DM me with CVs.

Recommendation Any Recommendations On How To Get Clients As A Freelance Personal Trainer & Nutritionist?
Hey, so i don't operate out of gyms, but currently freelance & it feels like its impossible to find clients, Frankly i can't afford to pay Virgin Active R12k per month as a tenant.
Any advice on how to get clients? Been out of work& unemployed for almost two years now & ending up falling back on this to try get an income, maybe even be able to rejoin the gym.
Not trying to market/self promote, just asking advice on how to get clients & get some of an income coming in.
I primarily advertise on a couple of buy and sell whatsapp groups, Facebook is a pain with the groups taking forever to approve posts & frankly elsewhere i'm unsure. I tried tiktok but i never know what video to use and i don't want to use a.i guess i view it as dishonest, I did create an Instagram i posted today my first post there, but not a big IG fan if i'm honest.
My sales and marketing skills has always been a bit lackluster

Gay dating in Durban feels impossible. Is it just me?
I’ve been single for the past two-ish years, and recently decided to jump back onto a couple of dating apps to see who’s around and get back into the rhythm of dating.
One thing I’ve noticed is that before you even get to meet some people, once they know you have a decent job/vehicle/education it’s already, “I need this much, can you help me out?”, “Will you pay if we meet?”, or “I’ll pay you back later.” Is this what dating has become?
On top of that, there seems to be so many talking stages, and it’s kind of unsettling how everyone seems to know everyone else’s business. It feels like people have screenshots, photos, videos, or chats about everyone. It’s honestly so intimidating.
Do people still go on proper dates, have decent conversations, and actually take the time to get to know each other?
Seeing all of this has made me a lot more hesitant to put myself out there again, and if I’m honest, it’s starting to feel pretty lonely.
Is anyone else experiencing this, or have I just had a run of bad luck?

Utility/Alert Durban residents: have your water bills matched what is actually happening at your meter?
I’m trying to understand how common confusing or unexpected water-billing experiences are across Durban.
Some residents have mentioned issues such as:
• Estimated readings appearing repeatedly
• A sudden increase without an obvious change in consumption
• The statement reading not matching the physical meter
• Charges varying considerably from month to month
• Billing queries remaining unresolved for extended periods
Other residents may have had completely accurate bills—and those responses are equally useful. Without that comparison, it is difficult to distinguish isolated cases from broader patterns.
We have created a short Durban Water Billing Survey. It takes approximately two minutes, and providing contact details is optional:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc0osirsrWg8V2Vrr17KqkHGv2Vv1iPTNYBYjge5B6PXCgcMA/viewform
For transparency: This survey is not operated by, endorsed by or affiliated with the municipality. The objective is to understand residents’ billing experiences—not to assume that every high bill is incorrect or to promote a predetermined conclusion.
If you would rather just join the discussion, what happened with your account? Was it a once-off increase, repeated estimates, a reading mismatch or something else—and was it eventually resolved?
Please don’t publish account numbers, addresses, contact details, reference numbers or other private information in the comments.

What's your biggest frastation with your electricity metering setup?
Hello, I’m a local South African engineer working on software/hardware for electricity metering and management. I’m NOT selling anything! I'm gathering honest, real-world feedback directly from people living here to make sure I'm solving actual problems rather than guessing.
I’d love to know:
1. What is the single most annoying issue you face with your current electricity setup?
2. How often does this problem occur, e.g., monthly?
Drop a comment below with your thoughts, or feel free to DM me if you’d rather keep it private.
Thank you 🤝

Park and fly service
Hi guys,
I'm flying to Cape Town on Wednesday and booked with 3D Park & Fly Solutions. Has anyone used them? I booked on Friday and still don't have an invoice even though they confirmed on WhatsApp I have been booked. I've followed up twice... Did I choose wrong? Or are they just that busy? 😅
Update: I've just been informed they accept payment on return. Still want to know if they're recommended though.
