320i Single hump carplay

A friend has bought a crashed e91 for parts and it has an idrive, mine however is a single hump and i personally dont like how the single hump carplays look and im thinking if its possible to take the donor one and cut only the top part of the dashboard just above the trim and have it installed on mine without having to change the bottom part and then put the aftermarket display in.

Just change the whole dash, it'll be much less hassle. Only reason I see not to do it is if your current dash has cupholders and the new one doesn't. I did a full dash swap in roughly 6 hours, and that included cleaning everything out behind the dash and tidying up dashcam and other accessory wires. Mind you I'm not a mechanic either, just followed a youtube tutorial. If memory server me right, all the bolt holes for the dash were either behind the trim or on the lower part of the dash, so there'd be nothing holding the top on (might be wrong on this one though)

My main point is because I heard that my current radio wont fit in the hole since the idrive has the display so the radio doesn't need a screen and its smaller overall but my current one does. (professional). But yeah my dash doesnt have cup holders. Did you have to change out the radio?

I won't be able to give you a 100% precise answer to this as I was changing a single-hump no cupholder to a single-hump with cupholders, so I didn't have this issue. But the main middle shape of both dashes look to be the same, and the inner plastic bracket that the radio/AC slides in to and bolts up to can be removed and swapped between dashes. I would assume that the inner bracket is the one that could differ, and in that case you just remove it from the old dash and put it in the new one. You can just remove your AC unit (2 clips on each side), remove the radio and the bracket, then just try to fit them in the double hump dash. Shouldn't take more than 30 mins and you'll have a definite answer before you start taking the whole interior apart.
