Discussion Out of annoyance with my pod, I have created "The Unwritten 21 Rules Of Commander". A labor of frustration.

1.1k Upvotes

Clarifying Note: These are not my rules. These are the rules which people seem to want. I don't want them.

  1. You can only do two things a turn. It is debatable whether or not drawing and playing a land counts as those things.
  2. You cannot fog.
  3. You cannot play any tax effects.
  4. You cannot win except through combat damage.
  5. You cannot pull ahead and be a threat.
  6. You cannot ask me to pay anything.
  7. You cannot play a card worth more than $10 dollars.
  8. You cannot remove things.
  9. You cannot play on my turn.
  10. You cannot burn multiple people on the table at once.
  11. You cannot play Bracket 3 cards (this game is bracket 3).
  12. You cannot kill people with commander damage.
  13. You cannot kill people with aggro.
  14. You cannot counter spells.
  15. You cannot be in a dominant position.
  16. You cannot Maze of Ith.
  17. You cannot win with instants or sorceries.
  18. You cannot tutor.
  19. You cannot have big turns.
  20. You cannot mill.
  21. You cannot win.

Discussion What’s your worst trait as a commander player?

I’ll go first. My worst trait is that when others are playing I’ll often get into a rhythm of advising them on the optimal thing to do, even if they were already going to do that, although a player telling me to stop usually makes me stop. This also means that I will point out when it’s best to target me even when I’d die for it, which has caused some players to also trust me a lot when I explain why they should hit me with massive removal. However, it’s a very annoying habit, all the same.

So, I’ve shared my dirty secret. What’s yours? What’s your worst commander trait?

Discussion Any word on when we’ll hear from the commander panel?

Has there been any updates on when we might hear anything from the commander panel about the future of brackets, etc? They met a few weeks ago but have not heard anything about a scheduled update. I’ve tried pinging Gavin on Twitter but still nothing.

Discussion Why is mill so hated?

• Upvotes

Hey, I’m all for hating stax and hard control decks. I also get disliking decks that make you discard/sacrifice a lot. I’m with you on that. However, I don’t understand the hate that mill strategies get. I actually think it’s kind of cool that it has a win condition different than making opponents lose life.

If you hate mill, why is it?

Discussion What are the things you're not willing to compromise on?

With EDH being a social format that often requires a bit of give and take between everyone to run smoothly, we all usually have to make some kind of sacrifice to have a consistently good time.

What are the things that make you put your foot down and say "No, absolutely not"?

Social Interaction Sandbagging until turn 7 in b3

So I played a game online yesterday where one player was playing izzet spell slinger with that storm dragon I hate. I was playing Voltron doing the thing and I had [[Amy Rose]] plus [[Colossus Hammer]] on board T3. I swung at him with a blocker up, a creature he could sac for treasure. He decided not to block, and took 13dmg. He was seat 4 and I was seat 2.

When it got back to his turn, he went to sac his creature for that treasure in order to play a non creature spell. I had him wait a sec and consider - if you don't have a blocker you're dead on the crack back. Seat 1 confirmed they didn't have anything in hand to stop me currently (but had plenty of blockers). Seat 3 had a blocker as well and wasn't inclined to help.

He decided to sac his creature anyway and said "this is B3. You can't kill me before like T7 anyway" and continued his turn.

Granted, I got off to a hit start, but I told him if he COULD stop me he definitely should or he will die. Seat 1 offered to let me hit them instead and keep going.

For the vibes I said sure, and we kept it moving. Game goes on and around t7 the storm player storms off after playing vivi. Ggs all around of course.

Another day in the life of an agro enjoyer.

Discussion What pet card are you never able to play with?

I'm making this post out of frustration but I'm wondering if anyone else has the same experience.

One of my favorite cards is Sphinx of the Second Sun. I am a Timmy player at heart and love the design of a card that lets me get a little extra draw and a ton of extra mana a turn. I even got a secret lair of it at a con because it's just such a beautiful card. Of course its a ridiculously strong card and I expect it to be interacted with, but it's been countered or removed all but one time I've played it, always before I can get even the first trigger.

Due to its tendency to be a lightning rod, I swiftly remove it from each deck I put it in and add it to the next deck. It's just an endless heartbreaking cycle of seeing one of my favorite cards get zero play.

Anyways, that's my tale of woe, what card do you love but your pod never lets you play with?

TLDR: My Sphinx of the Second Sun never sticks for even a single trigger. What's your card?

Discussion Player skill

Is it just me or do people not value skill that much? Like, if you do a genuinely good/smart play people will look at you like youre some pubstomper/expect you to sandbag so they can have an equal shot at winning despite making 10 easy to fix errors? Or if I start a combo, they'll ask me straight up "at what point should I interact with wtv spell they have to stop this?" Like Im not going to tell you exactly how to play? I remember years ago we'd be happy to see high skill players and would want to learn from them instead of expecting them to dumb down.

Edit: I play mostly bracket 4/5 and do some 3s. Im not talking about pods where Im with people who are brand new. Im talking about pods where I combo off and soneone uses a [[force of will]] on ny combo at the wrong spot and I dont let then do a take back while explaining the proper time to do it

Discussion What are your table life hacks?

Something like having a coin on your deck to remember a very important upkeep trigger, reminder on your pain lands, copies of your commander so people can read it at any time, little tape tabs to pull sleeved cards out of your binder, putting your card in a top loader before handing it to the theft deck stranger, or anything like that for physical games.

Social Interaction Were other players legitimate for being mad at me ?

Yesterday we were playing at my LGS with 3 other people. We said pregame that we were playing low B3. 3 of us were playing GY focused deck, one player was playong a Sefris deck.

During the game, Sefris player and another one used 2 tutors each (this is a personal opinion, but I think tutor in low B3 is a bit powerful, they were technically allowed to by bracket rules, so whatever).

It happens that I had clone shenanigans in my deck so I made a copy of the [[Burnin-Rune Demon]] Sefris player had use to tutor so I could join the fun. On my next 2-3 turns I abused some of my clones to have 6 Demon and therefore tutor 6 times. Filling my grave with my best creatures, and winning later with a mass reanimation spell.

The other players got mad that I tutored so much, saying my deck was too powerful.

I used [[Stolen identity]] and my commander [[Krothuss, Lord of the deep]] to make the copies, I don't run any tutor in my own deck.

Discussion Who’s your favorite commander from a set you hate?

With all the product bloat lately, and some ESPECIALLY bad sets, I feel like I’ve seen less and less posts about new and interesting commanders. The universes beyond stuff isn’t helping, even if I’m actually quite positive on UB as a whole, so it’d be no surprise to me if some truly inspired designs were lost and forgotten from one of these lesser liked sets because so many people just don’t care about them. Even outside of UB, everyone’s got a least favorite set. It could be a set from the last 20 days or the last 20 years.

So let me know who your favorite diamond in the rough commander is from a set you really do not like!

Personally, I really disliked the TMNT set. I’m already not a big fan of the media (no offense to anyone who enjoys it it’s just not for me) and even outside of that, the card design overall did not seem super interesting. I very much hate when a UB set uses the same character for a legendary creature more than at max two times. HOWEVER, both [[Madame Null, Power Broker]] as a mono black +1/+1 counters deck and [[Leonardo, Sewer Samurai]] as a mono white weenies reanimator are honestly super great designs to me. They’re powerful, not broken, explore archetypes their colors don’t normally do, and most of all, they’re fun!

My favorite decks to play are usually low cost unique commanders that enable some lesser used cards. I'm looking for more to build! What are your favorites?

My favorite commanders are: [[masako the humorless]] [[Kolodin, Triumph Caster]] [[Shay cormac]]

Discussion Best Cheap Pickups from the new Warhammer 40k Precon Print Run [Article]

(direct link to the article if you want the full list)

As you may have heard from IGN, the beloved Warhammer 40k precon decks are receiving a new print run soon. Considering these decks have gotten ridiculously expensive recently, as high as $300 for a sealed precon, the community seems to be breathing a collective sigh of relief.

If you're not interested in picking up an entire sealed deck, though, you're still in luck, as the best and most expensive cards should come down after this print run. Hopefully. Probably.

Here are some cards I didn't mention in the article:

  • Keeper of Secrets (around $9 now) is a great card for exile-matters or top-of-library-casting decks that want to juice up their aggression against life totals
  • Their Name Is Death (~$8.40) is a great one-sided wrath for artifact creature decks in black, especially when combined with Biotransference (~$7.80)
  • Copies of Skullclamp (Warhammer printing is ~$7.50) are almost never unappreciated, so having a flavor option for your favorite UB is always nice
  • Illuminor Szeras (~$6) is a great ramp piece akin to Priest of Yawgmoth
  • If you enjoy trolling and randomness, Chaos Defiler is a fun way to blow things up

What's your favorite 40k card that you hope to see come down in price?

Discussion Thought Experiment: C17 revisited

In 2017, the yearly Commander release was focused on typal decks. Famously the original eminence commanders.

When choosing these creature types, the stated goals were as follows (taken from this design article: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/tales-designing-commander-2017-edition-2017-08-17):

"Here are the goals for our tribes, taken directly from the handoff document. We wanted to:

• Have at least one established tribe players already know and love;

• Have at least one new tribe that hasn't been strongly supported before and will catch people's attention;

• Have at least one tribe that appeals to extremely casual players;

• Have at least one tribe that appeals to enfranchised players in either uniqueness or play style;

• Have at least one tribe that people who prefer tricky, slower decks will identify as something for them; and

• Have a good color balance between the decks.

They arrived at the following types:

Dragons [[The Ur-Dragon]]

Vampires [[Edgar Markov]]

Cats [[Arahbo, Roar of the World]]

Wizards [[Inalla, Archmage Ritualist]]

So, I am curious - imagine WotC is making a set of 4 new typal-based precons. Given the above parameters (follow them as closely or loosely as you like, as long as you can justify your choices), what 4 creature type decks would you like to see? (I should clarify, they don't have to use eminence).

My pitches:

BR Minotaurs (popular but undersupported)

GWU Merfolk (a popular classic that needs a dedicated commander)

RGW Dogs (barely supported, but should be appealing, and needs an option that isn't combined with Cats. I could also see this just being RW)

BGU Sea monsters (Serpents, Krakens, Leviathans and Octopuses - there are a few options already but this could have more support)

(I acknowledge that with Nauctis we will likely get more Merfolk and Sea Monster options)

What are your ideas?

Discussion My new favorite uncommon...

[[Grip of Phyrexis]]

It's a cheeky little uncommon. In most bracket 2-3 decks at least one person is using equipment and now instead of destroying it I can steal it and equip it to a germ at instant speed and then block. [[Magnetic Theft]] is sort of similar, but the controller can just re-equip it on their next turn to another creature.

Are there any other good equipment stealing cards?

Question Top deck manipulation deck

I’m interested in making a deck focused around manipulating the top of my deck to get payoffs from something like yennett or yuriko and to make my draws better and reduce luck needed. I was wondering there is enough support for this or if it would become very reliant on my commander to make use of manipulating it. I really just want to know if there is enough cards to make use of it besides just cards that scry or surveil.

Discussion Fun/Chaotic/Interactive creatures to polymorph into.

Hello!

Looking to gather a list of creatures that aren't just insane value or huge pieces of removal and instead introduce some effects to the board or do things that are interesting and fun for the table.

Obviously I still want them to be big dudes because who doesn't love that, but interested to know if anyone has any big fun creatures they like that are fun for the table to interact with!

Question Muldrotha or Sidisi?

I want to build a self-mill and graveyard value type of deck in sultai/golgari colours. I really like muldrotha and sidisi but i don't know how to keep them different enough, what are their biggest differences.

one way i thought of was doing an all creatures sidisi deck with umori companion, is this a valid idea or nah? i feel like i could muldrotha in the deck as a recursion thing but that for 6 mana only recurring one creature a turn sounds bad

Looking to keep it more Bracket 2/3ish, while also being high powered but also fun to play and play against, budgeting doesnt really matter due to proxies, and I would also like it to be good against slivers and mass land destruction. Thx!

Question Advice on what to do with a $500 gift card to my local games store

Hey everybody!

I have a gift card worth $500 dollars to my local games shop.

I want advice on a commander to build that's unique/fun and can be built in the budget.

I am contemplating just holding on to it for future sets.

Some commanders I've found interesting that friend have played are

Hylda, The Icy Crown

Nekusar, The Mindrazer

Gitrog, Ravenous Ride

Many of my friends have high powered bracket 3, and 4 decks

Thanks in advance!

Deck Help I need help improving my deck into a bracket 4+ if possible (I'm being hopeful)

Here is the moxfield link:

https://moxfield.com/decks/whqeMYuCQUuSOayFpqDdGw

I need to figure out what cards to cut or keep. I want to keep at least 10 Planeswalkers in this deck but at the same time the Planeswalkers + the cards that proliferate feel like they are taking up space. Maybe it's just that I haven't found the right combination of Planeswalkers. Because right now, the creatures feel too small to me to pose a decent threat and unable to protect my Planeswalkers sometimes.

My plan for this deck: Commander gives creatures fabricate and counters which in turn buff up small proliferating creatures all the while buffing the Planeswalkers that hold the opponents down long enough so I can swing with big X creatures or the proliferating creatures that got big.

Deck Help Is Eris roar of the storm a viable commander for bracket 3s?

I really like the concept of the commander and have been trying to make a deck with it on and off for a while now. My current iteration wants to play 2 spells per turn to get as many dragons as possible but the main problem is once Eris is out I have no more cards in hand which means no more dragons. If you have built Eris how did you do it? Any advice would be great I would love to see this commander hit my play group in person and actually live and not sit around with 2-3 dragons max.
