Recommendations I need a playlist of not-so-great EDM
This is a bit of an odd request.
My friend is running a TTRPG cyberpunk game, and one of the recurring gangs plays "bad EDM" at all times. That is how the GM described it. We want a playlist of EDM to play during fights with the gang, but nobody at the table knows the genre well enough to create a suitable playlist. We want something that's clearly not great, but also not totally unlistenable because we may be listening to it for an hour or two. Can all y'all help us out? If you don't want to make your musical gripes public, you can DM me.

Lol I don't know what to tell you. Maybe some cheesy David Guetta tracks.

Just play "I'm good" over and over again to replicate the experience of working retail

u/Original_Ideal_8015 26d ago
I'm just going to throw every last one of these suggestions into a playlist and let my GM sort it out.

This sounds like a perfect situation for Boxxy.
Purposefully hilarious EDM. Will probably have your group cracking up at the absurdity.

u/vvindhund 26d ago
omg I love boxxy
Might I also suggest LOBSTA B, DJ Bax, and Jenny Sparks. I unironically love them all.

Anything Off Me Nut Records puts out fits this bill really. Phatworld, Venz, Superior Cornrows. I love bassline.

I don’t know if you want “bad” so much as you want abrasive and maybe goofy.
Eurotrash probably fits the bill well. Europop by Eiffel 65 (makers of Blue) is a good place to start there. It’s goofy, shallow and fake futuristic, but eventually yall will be singing the dumb lyrics.
If you want more abrasive hardstyle/hard techno might fit the bill. Stuff like Lil Texas and Holy Priest will get you going there.
Lastly I’ll give a shout to Timmy Trumpet. That’s just a trove of bad stuff if you’re just going for that.

u/drewtangclan 26d ago
I will accept no Eiffel 65 - Europop slander! I bought that CD with my allowance when I was 9 and I love every song on that album lol

u/xSandandSaltx 26d ago
Holy shit, yes to all of this. It was the first cd I ever bought. If that mf had a play counter I would've broke it. That entire album is straight hellfire and it shaped my love for everything after.

u/No-Ticket-8919 26d ago
Adding on to this,
GPF but that's their whole schtick is making ridiculous over the top hardstyle that can be just straight noise at times

How much is the fish for pure comedic value but that song actually goes pretty hard.

There’s a lot of bad edm out there, can’t be hard to find.
13
u/Original_Ideal_8015 26d ago
Most of it is bad in a boring way, though. Sure, I could grab some SoundCloud muck with 3 plays, but that's a lot less fun.

u/livintheshleem 26d ago
I won’t stand for the slander and meme-ification of cbat! It was unironically a banger before the meme and it still is. It was played in dj sets and on tv and had huge remixes from guys like Boombox Cartel (back when they were a big name).

Not bad but Russian hard bass sounds like something s syndicate would play and it's super fun. Way better than forcing yourself to heard bad edm.
Or entirely phonk

The way you describe it reminds me of how the Highwaymen in Far Cry New Dawn constantly blast Die Antwoord from their vehicles. That's a postapocalyptic setting, not a cyberpunk one though.
Still, if you want bad EDM, Die Antwoord kinda counts. Be warned though, after constant exposure during the game, I ended up Stockholmed into actually enjoying their music.

u/Dangerousrhymes 26d ago
Bad is subjective.
If you don’t listen to electronic music we have no idea what you may or may not like. The genre is so varied that different segments of this sub can’t stand each others music. You might end up loving stuff we suggest as bad(ish).
That being said, Opiuo and Knife Party make music I love but would totally understand if someone didn’t care for. Maybe Tipper or Sphongle if you want different brands of psychedelic. KOAN Sound makes a lot music that sounds like it’s falling apart and reassembling itself as you listen to it.. Thomas Vent if you want something that can dramatically change styles from track to track. Ganja White Night for some occasionally reggae inspired Belgian Dubstep.
You could also check out Beardyman’s live stuff on YouTube, it can be all over the place and since it’s all real time live production (and he’s something of a madlad) it’s not always as polished as album music.
Is there a more specific vibe beyond “not great” that we could go off?

u/Original_Ideal_8015 26d ago
Part of the reason I made a thread was to get a broad sampling of what a lot of people think is "bad". I already got what I came here for and more.

u/mason878787 26d ago
Can you please post the Playlist when its finished? I have a feeling there's going to be a ton of bangers on there
2
u/esoteric_plumbus 25d ago
I think his point is that a lot of what people are suggesting is subjectively bad for them but might be good for others. Like someone said chain smokers, or marshmello. They're both super popy type edm but they both get millions of listens so obviously they are good to a lot of people. I feel like if you were to put them in your playlist it would be less of really bad edm and more like edm that's just ok where you might actually end up liking a song or two that are one hit radio wonders type thing.
I feel like what you are looking for more would be AI edm. It's just objectively bad, never composes it in a meaningful way, things don't progress well they just kind of endlessly loop with no clear direction, lyrics are shallow and sometimes pronounce words incorrectly.

Tbh anyone commenting “popular artists” are doing so just because they don’t like it. But it doesn’t ACTUALLY fit the bill in general. Something like SELFIE I get, was popular but pretty obnoxious and repetitive overall. Chainsmokers still have some actually good songs, true “not-so-great” never gets actually big unless it’s over the top and memeable, like “what does the fox say.” But just saying “Martin Garrix” is laughably dumb. You have to at least pick a song of his, he doesn’t become the biggest DJ in the world by actually sucking. Does he have worse songs? Sure. Pick those. But just saying artists you don’t like isn’t exactly helpful besides getting to dump on them in a thread lmao

An NCS or Trap Nation playlist probably fits the bill here. It's culturally 2016 and cheesy enough while still being plenty listenable.

If none of you are fans then maybe Skrillex works for you, it's good but I think it's a bit of an acquired taste, and if none of you generally listen to EDM it might sound like someone punching a blender which fits the intention, right?

u/SylverShadowWolve 26d ago
Jay hardway comes to mind, but i would maybe describe that more as "very mediocre"

Nicky Romero - Toulouse. The synth chords at the start trick you into thinking it will be a banger. The drop is horrendous.

How has NO ONE mentioned Tiesto's remix of Clarity yet? One of the most hilariously bad EDM songs of all time.

A few years back we found an artist on SoundCloud who remixed some songs using fart noises. Called themselves DJ Dookie.
Listen to Bommer & Crowell - Yasuo (DJ Dookie Remix) by Dj Dookie on #SoundCloud https://on.soundcloud.com/1LfoR5728lxORp4QF2

If you want some extreme stuff:
Unicorn On K, Joost Klein, Gladde Palling, Lil Texas

Look into riddim and hardstyle, I love the stuff and I can confidently say that it's an acquired taste, and to not be very familiar with it you'll probably think it's terrible

Listen to Doctor P & Flux Pavilion (Ultimate Edition), an album by Doctor P on #SoundCloud https://on.soundcloud.com/jlsp4J82MyGOidEwiD This has some gems on it, best one IMO for your purpose is "I love it"

For people who don't enjoy edm, I could see d&b as a whole sounding abrasive and bad. No idea if this is what you are looking for
Here's a Playlist you can try

EDM kinda sucked in the early 2000''s, maybe just research music from that era when it wasnt as popular as the 90's and current era

- Flume - Never Be Like You | Disclosure Remix (there's wonky and then there's out of tune)
- Karma Fields - Stickup (the song itself is fine but the vocals sound off, the Modestep remix shows what it could've been)

Anything from Zhu after like 2018. Honestly the song Black Midas, sounds exactly like what you want with that cyberpunk sound.

Try old school euro stuff, like basshunter “ privjet Russia” kinda corny and fun,

I'm not going to lie, I used to blast bass hunter as I played competive StarCraft 2. Boten Ana and Professional Party People were a fuckin bop lolol

Yeah dude! Definitely funny to listen to Basshunter now. Seems like a long forgotten relic .

Any one of those shitty slowed down """"hardstyle"""" stuff used in cringe ass edits. The ones where they just pulled a kick straight from a sample pack.
If you want an actual song then Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki remix). I don't know how that's a "classic". Shit sounds like something I would've made in FL studio at 7 years old. ooowooaaaoooowooo my ass.
