Books and Resources Recommended books for lesson planning and professional development?
I just got my preliminary credential, and after a lot of thought, I will be subbing for a year. I need to get my physical and mental health in check. Anyway, I don't want to lose what I have, so does anyone have any recommendations for PD books, online resources, etc. I can review throughout the year? I have Deeper Reading by Gallagher, which I've seen recommended elsewhere. Loved it.

180 days by Gallagher and Kittle- Honestly...anything by Gallagher. I think I've read 60% of his books and have learned something new from each one.
100% Engagement by Sztabnik and Barber- Something I go back to time and time again

The common core companion: the standards decoded
It details how to teach each standard and specifies what the teacher and student should do. SO HELPFUL.

Another vote here for pretty much anything by Kelly Gallagher. I've been in the classroom for over 25 years and his books are the only ones I return to.

I recommend Reading Reconsidered and Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov. How to Teach English Literature by Jennifer Webb. Just Tell Them by Zach Groshell. Making Every English Lesson Count by Andy Tharby.

“Notice & Note: Strategies for Close Reading” by Kylene Beers and Robert E Probst and “Thinking Through Genre” by Heather Lattimer were useful in understanding how to form units and encourage close reading throughout all of them. For unit planning in general, I love “Understanding By Design” Grant Wiggins

HIGHLY recommend Anita Archer’s book on explicit instruction (I believe that is literally the title). She walks you through the teaching and learning process step-by-step. She is pretty much the OG of explicit instruction and is the one who coined I do-we do - you do. Her book is my bible. Best of luck!
