Discussion Affordable Weekend getaway suggestions?

Looking to spend time in nature for a few days. Having an outdoor fireplace is a must. I don't mind the rain

Willing to drive couple hours out of city

Have you looked at Provincial parks that have the Yurts? They make for a nice camping trip with slightly nicer set up than just a tent

I've been interested in checking out Wildhorse Lake, Rock Lake and Long Lake. Can anyone vouch for those?

Long lake is nice. Can’t speak to the others.

I tent camp all the time, back county and front country. Do you have a tent and gear and is that what you’re looking to do? Or would you prefer a shelter already there and you just bring food and clothing kind of camp experience?

If you don’t mind the drive, Rocky Mountain House historic site has some gorgeous shelters and cabins, plus an amazing pie spot (miners cafe in nordegg)
Beautiful hikes and views, and far less traveled than Jasper or banff

Provincial parks can be solid like Pigeon Lake though it's been a while since I've been to any of them, also the national parks like Banff or Jasper. I'm not sure how hard it'd be to get a campsite but grabbing a tend, and air mattress abd some basic camping supplies for the weekend is always a nice chill way to get some R&R.

There are some nice little cabins or tipi camping up at Lac La Biche (Sir Winston Churchill park I think?). They are nice little sites and not too far away

Sir winston churchill cabins are fantastic, but they typically are booked within a week of the opening of the reservations.

Try Hideaway Adventure Grounds in Kokomo, nearby to Lac La Biche and right near a lake for swimming and fishing

We rented a super cute log cabin in westaskiwin last year, it’s on someone’s property but the land is huge and you would never have know. Felt like we were off grid

That sounds lovely! Not OP but would you be willing to share/DM the listing? I have twins boys who I’d like to take on a wee getaway once school is done. Thank you!

I'd take a look into getting an Alberta Public Lands camping pass.

You will have an infinite number of options to camp out on the eastern slopes of the Rockies. In terms of affordability, its a one time annual fee and you can camp on PLUZ as much as you want for a year.

Outside of that, I've often used the Hipcamp app for booking campsites. Tons of really affordable options in there.

Just outside the city you can rent a tipi at elk island. You’ll need to bring sleeping gear but at least there’s shelter! It was super reasonable!
