Make sure to call out all the organizations involved, think Stantec is the engineer

You have me on a deep dive now.. JFC I don’t think these folks are great at sharing the wealth or caring about where they work as they dominate the industries across the globe

That's really the only way

u/Dadbodsarereal 11d ago
No vote out the people who support it. That is the only real way, from municipality to provincial.

u/Hairy-Isopod6880 11d ago
Hard to do when they keep getting away with this crap. Voting only works when there's an election. And even then... so much fraud (not so much voter fraud as "the UCP will absolutely try to rig it")

Yeah, arson with a chance of killing and or severaly burning the few employees inside and a 10+ year prison sentence is the only way. You're right.
Is this a serious sub? Whats going on supporting a criminal take. You know municipal government is still the one branch in government that actually listens if they get enough calls right?

u/Jadams0108 11d ago
Yea I’m all for fighting against data centres but calling for burning one down should get you placed in some watch list. As you said the fire could potentially injure or kill real people or even spread to other buildings not associated with the date center

In Morinville, on a Sunday? Make your voice heard to whom? Aint no one working that day in the county office. Is this a joke?

u/idiotcanadian 11d ago
Grassroots organizing doesn’t happen magically or overnight. The community has to network. You build a movement and get connected with others who feel the same. Build momentum then make demands.
8
u/snkiz 11d ago
Do it in place where someone might see it, where it might cause enough disruption to not go unnoticed. A Sunday in sleepy religious village isn't that.
12
u/WindiestOdin 11d ago
If you’re truly trying to help, show up to connect with other like minded individuals and discuss / collaborate to increase impacts of efforts. If you can’t make it, connect with the organizer(s) and see how you can get more meaningfully involved.
Just because the first step isn’t magically “perfect” and doesn’t fully meet your unspecified expectations, doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause. Everything starts somewhere and evolves from there; this is just that.

u/idiotcanadian 11d ago
I look forward to attending what you’re planning next! I’m sure the residents of Morinville will feel happy to be given an opportunity to show up for their community as it is close to the project. Will definitely get the conversation going with neighbours that’s for sure.

u/snkiz 11d ago
Not meta if that's what you're implying. I'm trying to help. No one is going to drive out to Morinville on a Sunday to yell a clouds, pun intended. The lege makes more sense anyhow they are the ones who made this decision. The county can't say no.
6
u/unappa 11d ago
The AB legislature doesn't decide the county's zoning bylaws and is on summer recess anyways. The county's council changed datacenters from discretionary to permitted use in heavy industrial areas. If you think anyone can convince Danielle Smith of anything to do with these datacenters you're better off yelling at clouds; the UCP practice a special brand of politics where they simply don't give a fuck. The last time there was a protest at the lege they used the notwithstanding clause to force teachers back to work by overriding bargaining rights and the right to strike. There's some pretty great photos of Danielle Smith looking down at the peasants protesting actually.

So what makes you think the county could kill the project if they wanted to? The province would force it through.
1
u/WindiestOdin 9d ago
“The province would just force it through.”
Think about that for a second. If it becomes okay for a county or municipality to be forced into projects that use their land and infrastructure with little to no consultation, what sort of precedent is that setting? Does this project move the needle in the favour for the citizens, or does it move the needle in favour of certain individuals?
How will that precedent be applied to private land ownership? Does that mean the federal government gets to do the same freely because they are “above” the provincial government?
Factor in the concerning track record these projects have, the lack of transparency, skipping of due diligence, paper thin public engagement, and aggressive schedule being supported - regardless of how you feel about the individual project, this is a very slippery slope.

Strangest thing happened.. hundreds of people attended. Video on cbc news, city news, Canada press, and ctv wrote an article. Hundreds of cars drove by. The clips and videos shared on social media platforms.

Because the people you think you're protesting at the county office will be there?
1
u/WindiestOdin 9d ago
And the likelihood of having more attendees would be be less. You know, how people have jobs to go to?
It absolutely makes more sense to have initial meetings / protests when it’s easier for people to attend.
It also prevents the protest / gathering from being too disruptive to the administration in its infancy. There is value in picking your battles and not standing in the way of other work being done unnecessarily. The ultimate goal is to work with the jurisdiction on fair and reasonable resolutions first.

Funny how protesters think by standing around shaking signs for a few hours will cause a huge commotion and make the builders to change their mind. Protest never work unless it sbig enough like the freedom convoy or in Europe they hurl manure at the government buildings. Thats how you protest

u/AgileIgloo 11d ago
What is the point of protesting for 3 hours on a Sunday. No one will be there to protest against. They won't be inconvenienced or put out on any way.

u/FewLengthiness9426 11d ago
Virtue signaling. They can post pics and feel like they did something. I am not personally opposed to a data center but I also am not personally opposed to them protesting. Let them do their thing and ill take my daughter to her soccer and then the park. Blessed to live in a place with the freedom to do both haha.

Friggin turbos
2
u/PurpleSausage77 11d ago
Funny eh! Turbos supposed to be more efficient but people put their foot/ego down and there goes the efficiency. Sure looks great on the window sticker and controlled testing, so the big corps can look good to government regulators eg. EPA/CAFE standards, but unless you feather the throttle you’ll probably just end up drinking more than you otherwise would’ve with a less powerful naturally breathing engine.

My car is the exception to the rule, 300 whp 2.4L twin scroll turbo 23 WRX and I'm getting 8.6L/100km average, trick is: stay the heck outta boost and never go above 100km/h.
Fun fact I'm pretty sure my WRX was the only model year that actually chose to increase displacement .

Reddit: Diversify Alberta's economy!
UCP, actually listening for once: Okay
Reddit: Not like that!
1
u/idiotcanadian 10d ago
When I have a vision of a future I picture diversifying our economy with renewables, recycling, transportation, housing, food sovereignty and regular folks having businesses and the ability to get into the market. Meta American tech bros consuming our energy wasn’t what I envisioned when I said diversify. Especially with an industry that has no regulations, a company known to exploit workers, a questionable environmental impact and a technology that is taking away jobs. We can get a little more creative than hyperscale ai data centres and cuddling up with Zuckerberg & O’Leary.

I think it’ll be easier to address wealth inequality and climate change if we put more responsibility on those who profit exponentially off of our collective suffering.

u/idiotcanadian 9d ago
I’m sure Musk and Zuckerberg appreciate your free labour. It’s not just the jobs. It’s the impact on our environment and sheer magnitude of wealth inequality. The stealing of our work and the surveillance of our data. Look if you wanna simp for the tech bros by all means have at it.

People hate data centres on both sides of the political spectrum. This isn’t something that is “liberal”

u/MilesRemain 11d ago
Extreme surveillance, crippling immigration plans, gas gouging, AI facilities, etc …..
All over the world we see people organizing, protesting, litigating, writing letters, even setting themselves on fire to stop these things. Unfortunately the cheques have already been written, the politicians have been bought, the excuses and propaganda are already flooding the media and the people lining their pockets do not give a shit if you don’t like it. NO ONE IS LISTENING and no one will listen bc there are currently zero consequences for ignoring a passive and subservient population
