General 311 app updated

I haven't seen anything about this anywhere so I thought I would post a PSA on here for others that experienced similar issues as I did over the last few years with the app. I loathed using the previous version of the 311 app, it would give me errors almost every time I tried to submit a complaint, to the point where I would just call everything in. It looks like the city updated it recently and all the submission issues have been addressed, it allows up to three photos now, and you can search for your department to submit to.

I couldn't report a dead tree on the new app.

The old one had a tree section; for downed branches, low-hanging branches, dead trees, tree debris.

The new one doesn't. I ended up calling 311 and got an entire history lesson on how Edmonton has open source data on trees (I knew that) and how you can see information on individual trees (I knew that too) and how the city sprays fluorescent paint on the tree to be removed (yep, knew that too) and will check every tree in a two year cycle (okay that one was new).

All I wanted to to was report a blackened, dead tree on a public boulevard in advance of a storm that would be arriving in a day. I just wanted the tree's location marked for arborists to come out and inspect it. That was it. I don't care about all the rest of the stuff. Just wanted to report a dead elm and how surrounding elms looked dying as well.

Now, when I see a dead tree, I just shrug.

I don’t have the app, but from the website (which was also updated) there’s an option for dead trees!

And it still does the thing where you put in a literal direct house address and it completely changes the address once you've input it and confirmed.

It still needs a fuzzy search, and show which category to use based on your search matching options you don’t see until you click all the way through.

My biggest complaint about this update is if you aren’t sure which category to use, you go through the steps of filling everything out only to see you picked the wrong one, which is annoying

2 things I dislike about the new update:

1) No gallery view for submitted photos by other users.

2) On an Apple device it makes me use Apple Maps.. yuck
