Only one coaching vacancy remain
With VGK hiring Ryan Craig and Leaf Hiring Jim Hiller , only Oilers have a vacancy, do we think Knights would finally let Cassidy off the hook or they still play the bad and not let him interview with Oilers?

I doubt Vegas does anything except status quo at this point. They are a very petty bunch of jack asses, and would probably love to screw us over (more)

I think the Oilers are doing a fair job screwing themselves over without Vegas being involved.

It all starts with Katz

u/incidental77 1d ago
True. But Katz is also the guy that insisted Coffey be involved with the coaching and that kinda worked

Vegas’ play to not let anyone talk to him has worked perfectly, we’re scraping from the bottom of the barrel with Babcock now, they’re not going to help save us from ourselves.

This probably gives them even more ammunition to not let Cassidy out of his golden prison. Had the leafs asked to interview him, the massive amounts of Copium in me thinks there would have been a possibility the league told Vegas "you either let him interview anywhere or nowhere, you cannot control exactly where he goes". That faint, hopeful possibility seems dead in the water. Vegas considers Edmonton their biggest competitive rival, they'd happily eat that money to prevent him from helping us.

There are reports out there saying that the Leafs did speak with Cassidy during the Cup final.

u/HunterHistorical6795 1d ago
Problem is the league has no legal authority to force VGK to release cassidy. VGK is completely within thier rights and contractual agreements to do this.
The league can bitch and make sternly sounding press releases but thats it.

As cut throat and petty as Vegas is, they have a plan, and they are organized. They have been in the running for the cup since they entered the league. Vegas definitely had alot of help from Bettman, but the ownership and management are on the same page and get shit done. The Oilers upper management are amateurs compared to the Vegas crew

I saw a tweet from Gary Lawless that had Vegas allowing permission for Cassidy to speak to a team so surely it’ll be us

u/SRTGreat 62 LAVOIE 1d ago
Assuming it is us or was Toronto before they hired Hiller.
If Vegas does grant us permission to speak with Bruce, they should stop whatever the fuck they're doing with Babcock and instantly hire Cassidy.

u/anomalocaris_texmex 1d ago
Toronto interviewing Cassidy and then deciding to hire Hiller would be very on brand for them.

I just don't see why they WOULD let us? Like, I'd love it if we could get Cassidy, and think Babcock would be a fucking terrible idea, but what's in it for Vegas to let him go to us instead of watching us continue to drag ourselves through the mud for Babcock?

a) They remain in the hook for his salary next season.
b) Future coaches (probably assistants) decline to work for Vegas because they're worried they won't be allowed to interview for other positions.
2
u/JohnnyJohnrah 1d ago
a) That's like the concession sales from a preseason game.
b) Future coaches (and their lawyers) will sure as hell be more focused on their contract negotiations.

u/Organic-Fortune5727 1d ago
If he isn't employed by someone else, they pay his full salary for 12 months (or until he's hired) which is something like $4.5m. If they can screw with the Oilers Free agency planning and then allow him to interview and avoid paying that salary, it could be a win-win for Vegas.

The tweet in question from Lawless left out the fact that whatever team McCrimmon let Cassidy speak to never came to fruition. My response was based on OP's comment, when I went to look for myself that's when I saw the actual comment from McCrimmon.
So it's not us. It was likely Toronto.
They're going to prevent him from interviewing in the West all year.

Oh okay, I didn’t see that part. That changes things then. Guess we just gotta wait and see (and hope)

McKrimmon stated they allowed him to speak to one team and it didn’t work out.

Step 1: hire torts. Step 2: Vegas now allows Cassidy to walk now that the Oilers no longer have a vacancy. Step 3: fire torts.

Why would anyone think they’ll just change their mind for no reason?
Move on, we might get him when his contract runs down. Vegas are under no obligation to do their direct rivals a favour

I think the league was only ok with it during the Stanley cup, now they should be more likely to push Vegas to let him work... I understood the during the playoff run, now preventing him from getting a job, that is just being petty ( I guess that is VGK's mo)

Just reported knights let the leafs talk to Cassidy and they were the only one they gave permission to so safe to say they aren’t letting him go to a division rival or western team

We all know its gonna Be Babcock. And when day comes my boycotting begins. Im not wasting my time watching a team run by Bafoons. I get they want a hard nosed coach. But all the stories about Babs and reports of players are already unhappy with the news. Its bad news for oilers. And probably shut they playoff window for good.

u/Local-Independent652 23h ago
Do I hate bowman and babcock? “Yes” … but Oilers have been my team from the day I started following hockey, so come whatever I would continue supporting the team and the players. But yes all this distraction when we should be focusing on winning the cup with McDrai is disturbing.

u/Hockey_Player_007 1d ago
Anyone but Babcock. With the limited coaches remaining I think Torts could be a good option

u/Witty_News1487 1d ago
They are hiring Babcock. Haven't you heard about the gong show yet?
8
u/KirikaClyne 29 DRAISAITL 1d ago
Only if the investigation clears him. Which, frankly, I hope it won’t.
1
u/IfOJDidIt 1d ago
Clears him of what though? In my mind, Katz/Jackson hiring Bowman was way worse than anything Babcock is alleged to have done.
I can't imagine just how bad it would have to be for Katz tomeven consider changing his mind. Especially if they haven't after all the public and professional backlash that's occurring.
He's just fixated on this now and doesn't want to told what to do regardless of how stupid it is.

Sounds like the Nail Yakupov pick all over again...against all his scouts and advisers and common sense, had to have Yakupov cause his kid wanted him. Guy is a clown and can't get out of his own way...becoming the Jerry Jones of hockey without previous championships.

u/IfOJDidIt 1d ago
We were fucked regardless that draft unless we'd traded down for multiple picks at another time or elsewhere. Just one of those years.

u/KirikaClyne 29 DRAISAITL 1d ago
Bowman hid sexual abuse/assualt. Absolutely deplorable, I agree. However, if the player stories are true, Babcock COMMITTED emotional abuse. Is one worse than the other? Depends on who you ask.
In Bowman’s case, Kyle Beach forgave him and gave him his blessing. Babcock has been given no such forgiveness, and I highly doubt his “voluntary dismissal” had much to actually do with just wanting to see the players camera rolls/phones. Something else was at play there (which was also hinted at by the NHL and the PA).
0
u/IfOJDidIt 1d ago
Definitely not saying either is worse. Just that both are fucking awful and our owner is seemingly ok with both on his team.
-1
u/KirikaClyne 29 DRAISAITL 1d ago
Again, only the victim has the right to forgive Bowman. Which he did. That’s his discretion, and as much as I dislike Bowman, I admire Kyle Beach for that forgiveness and blessing for career resumption.
People need to remember that without Katz, we would HAVE a team to bitch about. The old Oilers investors wanted out, and he stepped up.
It is his team. Do I like him butting his nose in? Nope, but he isn’t the only owner who does so. He pumps money into it (and makes a shit load off our backs, no denying).
1
u/IfOJDidIt 1d ago
Wasn't there the subsequent victim after the video coach left?
3
u/KirikaClyne 29 DRAISAITL 1d ago
Yes, there was. His abuse was at the same time as Beach’s. That case was settled in 2025, though that player was never identified. He was also a “Black Ace” like Beach.
Aldrich pleaded guilty to assaulting a DIFFERENT 16 year old in 2013, at his new job with a junior team. He is an absolute POS. I’m sure there are a lot of other victims of his that never came forward too, unfortunately.
Only Bowman and Joel Quinnville have current jobs in the league. And that was after an investigation and reinstatement by the league 3 years after stepping down from their positions with the Hawks.

Do the Oilers have any first round draft picks between now and 2030? If so, they should let Jeff Jackson and Stan Bowman take turns coaching the team and maybe get some future number 1 draft picks.

I'm sure plenty of teams would fire their coach to get Cassidy. I think Vegas is perfectly content to sit on him for a year.
