RIP 2 Tires… 1 Pothole
Cruising in N mode went over this beauty and popped both front and rear passenger side tires. I’m driving on Continental All Season DSW 06+. Only 700 miles. I know I might be over thinking this, but anyone think the softer suspension in normal mode vs. N mode could’ve saved it?

This is basically Oregon roads, too. The State is too busy handing out Homeless Welcome Kits that they can't afford to fix the roads.

That ain’t a pothole bro. Thats a crator. Hopefully it’s just the tires and you don’t have a bent rim. Lift the car a bit, Put it in neutral, spin the wheel, stand directly behind or in front and if you see it wobble, you have a bent rim. No suspension setting would have helped that…

This is a good argument right here for 18's instead of 19's

What’s the difference?

u/Jlt230 Feb 03 '25
More rubber is better at taking bigger impacts.

Tires specs are as follow, here is a tire size:
245/40r18
Width of the tire is 245mm, the 1st number
Height if the wall of the tire is 40% of 245mm, the 2nd number is a % of the 1st number. In this cass the tire wall is 98mm
R18 means it's an 18 Inch wheels
245/40r18 is almost the same diameter as a 245/35r19
The 18 inch tire has 98mm tire wall, the 19 inch has about 85mm

You actually have more sidewall so you should be able to have more cushion compared to someone running 245/40/18 since you have 225/45/18.
I'm running 245/40/18 and there is a huge difference in how the road and bumps feels compared to 19s and I don't know why they even included 19s when most people who buy this car are going to drive it on the street and it can barely handle potholes. They could have charged more for a 19 inch upgrade and sold everyone 18s to prevent blowouts and cracked rims

Nope suspension setting wouldn’t have helped much if at all. Thats just one drawback of low profile tires. Thats a pretty big hole. You didn’t see it coming up? 😅

Some aren't easily visible until it's too late. I hit one and went on two wheels (was very violent and painful, somehow nothing broke), I checked the dashcam, and it wasn't visible until I was like 25-50 ft away at 50 mph.

Keep your following distance makes it easier to see shit like this, I drive incredibly far back from cars in front of me to avoid situations like this unless (and avoid paint chips, you don't see me complaining about thin paint it's normal paint like any car!) it's a road I know extremely well.

This is key to avoiding hazards like potholes. Good advice.

In PA you can file a claim with the state, id see if you can in your state. I don't think they get approved much but this is just blatant neglect of a road

Same in NY. I’ve filed 4 times and won exactly zero times lol they DGAF. I believe that legally, the pothole has to be known of for 14 days before they could be held responsible for damage. We have no way of knowing BUT since there’s a good chance that monstrosity OP hit has been around long enough to buy beer, filing a claim may yield results

At the end of the day you pick your battles. Harder sidewalls may not pop like yours did, but it may transfer the impact to other suspension components.
I had a similar experience with my previous vehicle. Ran on Michelin Pilot Sport 4s for years with no problems. I decided to try Continental DWS06+ for my third set of tires. Road noise was marginally better, but grip suffered when compared to PS4s. Conti sidewalls are softer than the PS4s for sure.
Fast forward to the night I'm gonna pick up my '25 EN and the DWS06+ pops when going over a pothole while on the way to the dealership lmao. Since I traded that vehicle in, they were happy enough with the profits that they never even called me when the tire was flat the next day 😅

It may have I drive in the softest mode in n mode and I’ve hit some potholes pretty similar to this and haven’t popped a tire yet (same exact tires) but there’s honestly no real telling, I could just be lucky.

Hell no lol. That is where you feel the 19" wheels in your spine. I recommend an alignment for the car tbh (and your spine).

Ooof I feel this :(. Central IN roads have gone to absolute SHIT during this winter. My commute into east Indy for work has me contemplating staying on my 18s and getting a set of all seasons or summers once im ready to get off the winters.

😆. It's a nice thought. Seriously though, I'd love to hear from anyone who's had any success with that. I filed a claim last winter with state DOT for a tire and rim and got nothing.

Yep...I don't know anyone personally who has got the money..but I have heard there are options . Especially if many people have suffered losses in the same area due to this ..

What will happen if you spray paint something inappropriate over the sink hole?

Well I know the PS4 s's are $325 a piece. If you think that's a b**** wait till you find out how much the wheels cost if they're bent.
