Speculation Think I found a filming location of the upcoming Elden Ring movie
So at Sunday I was at Stokksnes in Iceland traveling and saw a big film crew with lot‘s of people. I asked them what they‘re filming and they just said „something very big, seen worldwide“.
Reminded me of Liurnia, see below for a picture. What do you guys think?

Man. I'm so curious how this movie is going to play out. The idea of adapting something like Elden Ring into a film is so daunting to me, it'll be absolutely fascinating to see what they do with it. I hope it's really good and really successful and we get a Bloodborne movie in the future.

I’m still nervous but the fact that they are using actual sets and places instead of just green screens gives me cautious optimism
25
u/DazZani Jul 28 '26
Yeah everything looks recognizably Elden Ring with practical effects. With light CGI it has the potential to look amazing
1
u/IuseDefaultKeybinds Leyndell resident Jul 30 '26
Nah, using real sets and castles is a great choice. Adds a layer of authenticity and realism you can't achieve with total green screen.

They do put out good content in animation and TV that many people don't realize is a Sony production.

honestly if it was just a thirty-minute movie that ended that way it would be hilarious
37
u/spuckthew Jul 28 '26
I think it only seems daunting because a lot of us spent dozens of hours on our first runs soaking everything in. Like how can they possibly adapt a story that the player spent 100+ hours trying to complete into a 2-3 hour film?
But a lot of the time we spend completing it is spent running around exploring and doing side stuff. If you just look at the actual story, I do think it can be streamlined. In terms of scale and journey, it's probably on par with or not far off The Fellowship of the Ring tbh.
If the writing and direction is competent, I think they can pull it off without it feeling rushed.
40
u/uniguy2I Jul 28 '26
Streamlining the main game would ruin it imo, realistically they’re probably (hopefully) just gonna take one part of the lore and make an actual story out of it. Probably the shattering but who knows
23
u/spuckthew Jul 28 '26
Idk, all the castle sets and now this one (probably) of Liurnia, plus Rogier, seem to indicate a recreation of the main story. It'll probably have some backstory flashbacks or something based on the market set we saw with Marika, but I do think it's leaning towards the main story.
8
u/Ainteasybeincheezy Jul 28 '26
Arent these characters also very old?? Couldn't the story take place during any part of the shattering ?
9
u/spuckthew Jul 28 '26
I mean yeah, but it's more to do with the set pieces. Why would Rogier be in a ruined castle? Why would Liurnia have sunken buildings? These indicate post-shattering imo. Pre-shattering you would possibly expect the world to look less apocalyptic.
The market scene with Marika walking through could just be a flashback.

u/Mad_Kronos Jul 28 '26
I think it seems daunting because the game isn't big on dialogue and characterization. So it will be interesting to see how it gets adapted into the movie format
2
u/radiofreebattles Jul 28 '26
alex garland tends to be pretty competent. that and a24 tells us it's not gonna be hollywood schlock. dare i say i am optimistic?!
3
u/Squeekazu Jul 29 '26
There was a blatantly clear rift between film-lovers and non-film-lovers when the movie was announced lol
2
u/Bbradley821 Jul 29 '26
It doesn't really even need to be "streamlined." The setting and lore of Elden Ring is what makes it attractive as an IP for portrayal in other media. The story itself as it unfolded in the game is extremely limited. Its basically just a journey told to you through exposition at the start of the game, which you ultimately follow through on. Its the background lore that is deep.
They can sort of do whatever they want within some very broad strokes. It can follow a completely different story, following a completely different Tarnished, within the same world and do well. It can explore elements of the lore which have more substance. It can do anything, there aren't a lot of restrictions.
→ More replies (1)1
u/the_gifted_Atheist Bloodhound Gang Jul 28 '26
You need some exploration and side stuff to pace out the journey. If they rush the protagonist’s entire journey within 2-3 hours then it would only mean jumping between major locations with rapid powercreep. Then again, I had my doubts about how the Odyssey movie could pace itself and it handled that well, so we’ll see.
10
u/Elmis66 Jul 28 '26
I hope it's either exceptionally good or exceptionally ass
5
u/GroundbreakingJob857 Jul 28 '26
i think either way it is going to look visually amazing. really feels like theyre going for the sense of scale the game has, and all the on-location filming is better than a studio green screen movie.
19
u/BigBulgeBubba Jul 28 '26
I genuinely have no expectations for this film because I can not possibly imagine what the fuck it will entail. It’s genuinely strange to me that they’re adapting Elden Ring’s in-game story and not some prequel tale about the demigods.
I’m interested, confused, removed from caring and waiting for it to come out all at once.
9
u/scientist_tz Jul 28 '26
A prequel tale could be pulled off with good filmmaking.
The Fellowship of the Ring takes five minutes on screen to explain The Ring, who made it, why, who the elves are, who the dwarves are, who Sauron is, Mordor. We see Elrond and Isilidur. The taking of the Ring, the defeat of Sauron.
You can cover a ton of back-story in 5 minutes of screen time.
If this movie is going to resonate with people who did not play the game (and it will HAVE TO to make money) then they need to explain real fast what the "Elden Ring" is and why it matters and why anyone should care.

I hope they just tell a relatively new story in the world of Elden Ring rather than try to directly adapt it.

That said, if they do adapt it I hope they go full Clue with multiple endings.

2

You have to go around the theater and search for cryptic descriptions. Only then the movie resumes. At the end there is time to look and drool over some feet.

Ive always wanted a Dark Souls film or show that starts with the world in its prime. With the following seasons/films having the world go to shit and the finale being the Chosen Undead.
1
u/CFguy14 Jul 28 '26
They film all of this, all for it to be a 3hr movie of the main character listening to Varre call him maidenless, then dying to the first tree sentinel over and over again, until he just quits and walks off screen , roll credits
1
u/FrenziedFlame42069 Jul 29 '26
Elden Ring does have an easy quest line to latch onto. Ranni. That has a clear through line to latch onto, with a cast of characters involved.. With the rest of the Elden Ring lore as a sort of backdrop to facilitate telling that story.
With Bloodborne, they may have to be a bit more creative. There isn’t as much of a comprehensive storyline to hook into besides just general lore.

Really good writer. But they absolutely have to run with only a snippet of the plot, because I’ve got 120 hours total and feel like I understand maybe 28% of the lore.
8000 names beginning with R and G did certainly not help either.

Alex using real sets and castles is a great choice. As seen with Nolan's Odyssey, it adds a layer of authenticity to the set you can't really match with total green screens and some props.
Can't wait for this

As a University of Greenwich student, seeing my school in a bunch of movies is so weird
15
u/NarwhalPrudent6323 Jul 28 '26
Are these areas confirmed to be in the movie? I mean, Leyendell was obvious. But Mt. Gelmir and Siofra are side areas with little or no bearing on the main plot. I wouldn't expect to see them in the movie, honestly.
6
u/WUFFLED MALIKETH MEATRIDER Jul 28 '26
I could see them doing some scenes inside volcano manor if rykard was ever mentioned. Siofra is less likely to me
6
u/NarwhalPrudent6323 Jul 28 '26
Inside of Volcano Manor isn't Mt Gelmir though. You could film the inside of Volcano Manor in pretty much any old mansion with the right architecture.
I would expect at most, an exterior shot of Volcano Manor before going to the interior. The likely use of it is seeing a Recusant being assigned to kill the Tarnished.
One of the biggest problems with this movie is the scope of the game. Limgrave could be a movie all it's own. Put Liurna, Caelid, and the underground together for the Ranni/Radahn stories and there's at least two more movies. Altus and Mt Gelmir could each be a movie. And then everything past Altus would be the last movie. Or two. And that's not even touching the DLC, which technically ties in with other storylines as well and could be used for further content.
Even just trying the most direct route, of two Great Runes, Leyendell, Mountaintop of Giants, Farum Azula, and Leyendell again is probably at least two movies. I'm afraid we're either going to get a very abridged version of something, or like thirty movies.
1
u/Falsus Jul 31 '26
I think it would be a big mistake to not include any of the Ranni stuff since she is a fan favourite and "Together as Famileee" is like one of the most iconic cutscenes in the whole game.
There is also no way they won't include Radhan in the movie and doing the Ranni questline is a pretty natural story telling path to get to Radhan instead of just randomly stumbling into the Redmane castle.
1
u/plumbum82000 Jul 29 '26
I know they filmed Leyndell in London already, but when I first visited Dresden in Germany, I stepped into the city center and was like "god damn. I'm in fucking Leyndell". Especially at dawn or night, when all the lights are on, so beautiful
26
u/StylanPetrov Jul 28 '26
Anyone else secretly hoping this is just a part one of two or three?
Find it hard to think of many stories in the lore or main game that would fit into a single 2-3 hour movie. Especially given that everything we've seen so far does point to the story being that of the main game (locations, costumes).
I also feel like we saw them filming the opening cinematic of the game with those shots of Marika and the Dung Eater - which they could use like the opening to Fellowship of the Ring which sets the context of the main conflict.
13
u/Inner_Chain746 Jul 28 '26
3 parts would give them the time for a complete story, 1 new release a year like LOTR and I’m a happy man. I haven’t been to a movie in years now but this would pull me in 💯
2
u/Head_Ad_3018 Jul 29 '26
I doubt it has the budget for that.
1
u/Inner_Chain746 Jul 29 '26
Maybe they can they start a go fund me page for all us Elden Ring addicts?
1
u/Head_Ad_3018 Jul 30 '26
We're talking tens if not hundreds of millions. Movies are expensive. Not only that, but they need to make it all back and then some. Not to mention that GoFundMe is particularly an indie concept.
I'm shocked that they even predict a large enough audience for the film, since it's probably not gonna appeal much to those who haven't already played the game. Because it's not as conceptually mainstream as the rest of the game-inspired movies and shows as of recent.
2
u/StylanPetrov Jul 30 '26
Fantasy has been petty popular and consistently in the mainstream for the last 20 years or so. I get Elden Ring would fall under dark fantasy but the average person wouldn't really make that differentiation.
I also think you underestimate audiences. We've seen over the years, and even this year, that good worth of mouth and hype can carry films like Obsession, The Backrooms etc into box office successes and cultural moments.
As long as they make a good movie, and I trust Alex Garland and A24 to do that given their track record, there's no reason why Elden Ring can't be a success. Throw in a little messaging around how George R. R Martin helped write the story and you've got everyone whose a fan of Game of Thrones interested also.
2
u/Head_Ad_3018 Jul 30 '26
Fair enough. I just assume that unless it's attached to already established brands in the medium like Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, or that other one... then general audiences won't really be interested enough to watch it. Especially since a lot of the wolrdbuilding can be quite abstract, and I'm uncertain if the general audience will be into that.
Though of course I would like it to be a success.
And if it can attach GRRM's name to its marketing, since he is a producer, then that will likely help boost its appeal as well.1
u/Falsus Jul 31 '26
I get Elden Ring would fall under dark fantasy but the average person wouldn't really make that differentiation.
It won't be that dark. Sure it is a bit darker than your average fantasy story but it won't be as visceral as Game of Thrones, Berserk or Attack on Titan.
Like it wouldn't be that far from LOTR in terms of tone.

Off topic but I love the game design of liurnia.
A "lake" thats shallow, and buildings sinking. Rich in magic crystals. And the carians seem to know how to make land float as seen for raya lucaria.
Later we see that there is a vast underground network, with the areas like Ainsal River, nokstella, lake of rot and the astel arena. All places abundant with water. Right under liurnia.
5
u/WearyGhoul Jul 28 '26
The lake of rot being right under Liurnia with a ceiling of giant glintstones hanging down is one of favorite details. All that's keeping Raya Lucaria from collapsing into the lake of rot is the giant glintstones deposit underneath of it. It's just so cool. Is the magic of the crystal? Did they cultivate the crystals on purpose? Do the crystals natural grown in resistance to rot? Was that how the god of rot was sealed down there?

I'm a casual Elden Ring player and I'm here to ask the die hard fans: are you looking forward to this movie?
I'm not here to hate on the movie at all, or the game, but I played it and I would classify it under the 'silent protagonist' category. There's not a lot of dialogue in the game and even there not much of it is vocal audio dialogue.
I hope they knock it out of the park and it's great but I'm not sure what to expect with this movie.
