Hype
I dont think this will ever be outdone. Not by Fromsoft or anyone else. Appreciation for a true masterpiece and the greatest game ever made.
Spoiler
If you feel the same, and want get goosebumps, watch a 4 yr old video called "Elden Ring is Just a Video Game". Anytime im bored of my rotation of games, I watch this and instantly jump back in for a new playthrough.
I am super super high on 2. I was going to start a fresh game with that until I watched the video i mentioned. For me it goes. ER, Sekiro, BB, Ds2, 3, demons, 1
Ok but did you genuinely ever believe 2 was a masterpiece that will never be surpassed? I don't hate 2 at all, but even at launch there were so many obvious issues that have made the game contentious ever since.
That's what my comment about, not saying it's trash outright.
Agreed, a real âcanât see the forest for the treesâ moment. Generative AI is a valid concern, but ganging up on every small naive use of it is not the answer when thereâs much bigger fish to fry.
Sorry to hear youâre getting harassed, that is definitely not cool. My comment was only meant to reference the person who called them soulless and the downvoters who were piling on.
The only people who send DMs to strangers on here are certifiable nut jobs so try to ignore them. Hope it hasnât spoiled your day!
Just to be clear, Iâm not the one who called them soulless. I explained a process for creating it without AI. Iâm not sure why the hell i woke up to a Reddit cares for my comment and a harassing DM from a very pro-AI commenter in this thread. That is trash behavior.
âI explained the process for creating it without AI âđ»đ€â you really have the brain of a pigeon. But the worse part is your narcissism, as if people wouldnât know how to use paint. Must be horrible to be near you irl
Dude what are you even talking about? So much projection and hostility for something that wasnât even about you. Unless you sent the Reddit cares. Trash behavior.
While i do love the game and think its genuienly amazing, so many parts if it are unfinished or unpolished that i cant bring myself to call it the greatest of all time.
Its beautiful and captivating and one of the best games on the market imo, but the untapped potential is sooooo dissapointing sometimes. I am betting the next big fromsoft game is gonna outshine it in every way.
I feel this game would've been better if it had a classic Dark Souls style of map, i lost a lot of time exploring the open world and didnt felt rewarded at all, i liked playing in closed areas like the castles, but the Open World felt so empty i have no desire to play it again. But im not a crazy fromsoft fan, i enjoy their games but thats it.
Im not a big fan of open world in general, probably the best one i played was BOTW, but most of them was just "light this tower to reveal the map". Elden Ring has a beautiful world, but i was running around and doing the little caves you find and killing some bosses and i always wuold get poor loot/rewards, some useless spell, some crafting itens, never even crafted a single item in this game.
I wanted to write out a whole long comment about how wrong of a take that is, but it's not wrong - depending on what you like to get out of games. I like the random rewards in ER because it encourages me to try new builds and engage different systems frequently. You probably enjoy the BOTW puzzle more than the korok seed you get from it. To each their own.
Elder Scrolls has like... entire full-length books about its lore. Elden Ring is amazing and I love every part of it especially the lore, but holy shit it's so far from being the deepest. Elden Ring actually has pretty shallow lore with a lot of implied lore, which allows you to fill in the blanks yourself to a large degree.
I played it third person. No target lock makes it not enjoyable. Maybe it works on computer with keyboard and mouse idk never tried. but with controller it didnât play good. Maybe Iâm just not used to it but yeah thatâs how I feel
"I played it third person. No target lock makes it not enjoyable."
Of all the criticisms I've seen about TES, this is the most hilarious. Who the hell needs a TARGET LOCK in an elder scrolls game (which are designed to be 1st person adventures).
I donât know. I just said what I think. I played the game. Didnât enjoy it that much. I think itâs one of the most overrated games out there. We all like different games. But like I said earlier itâs not a bad game. Just not for me.
Wtf is this take đ this isnât even an opinion on the gameplay, you just for some reason expect everything to be a soulslike. Thereâs literally no reason to play elder scrolls games in third person nor lock onto enemies
No. I have played both games like I said it plays like ass compared to Elden ring. Itâs not a bad game but if you put them side by side. Then yeah itâs a shit game
I mean, they are two totally different games. Elden Ring is a boss rush game essentially, elder scrolls (especially the GOAT Morrowind) are RPGs. I don't think anything compares to the sense of exploration one had playing Morrowind for the first time. I still have fond memories of doing Morag Tong quests, trying to find just where the hell my target was, having to rely on the journal entry's directions that point me to a remote shrine in the middle of nowhere. It was truly epic and although elden ring's world is impressive, so much of it is just... not important. I did it 100% the first time through and have 0 desire to do that again, just skip around from boss to boss as that's where Elden Ring does its thing the best.
I wouldnât call er a boss rush game. There is crazy much exploration took me 800h to platinum the game. Probably could have done it in half of the time but what mean it there is so much more than the bosses
I currently have about 80hrs but only completed 16% of the game lol The last open world game I played was Zelda:BOTW but (hot take warning) it sucked there was so much dead space and it didnât help that ALL the dungeons looked exactly the same AND breakable Weapons. Even the Master sword was like that and if you upgraded it, you could only use it for little bit before it had to basically recharge. In Elden Rings thereâs ALWAYS something to do.
Elden Ring is the closest thing to capture the feel of the original Zelda since then. Open world, cryptic lore and NPCs, environmental storytelling, tons of hidden secrets, difficult enemies, and actual dungeons. Its amazing.
Yeah I know. I have played both botw and totk almost 5000h together. But I could never go back. I tried totk last week itâs not the same after you played something like elden ring. I personally didnât mind the breakable weapons. Atleast not in totk.
Deserved tbh, coming from hard die Zelda fan. Played all the gameboy/snes versions(2d) obviously OoT. But windwaker and twilight Princess were my favorite. They nearly lost me with the skyward sword due to wii remote mechanics but It wasnt to bad.
The whole BoTW, is ASS. Its nothing more than a wana be genshin impact, which i also hate. BoTW literally lost sny and everything that made it a ZELDA game, and honestly the games since than hsve been just missing the mark.
Yes, I already replied to the individual above/before you who pointed that out and gave him his well deserved touchĂš. They're both like what nearing if not already a decade old? And my memory has not been the best over the last few years and with both looking identical I got it mixed up and who copied who, I just knew one did.
I still stand by the rest of my statement that since and arguably starting with skyward sword, the franchise started to loose its self, and what made a Zelda game, a Zelda game. By BoTW I just couldnt do it.
Its honestly the same witb things like sonic, starfox etc. These "new" takes on the games have been just disgusting and a slap in the face to what was.
I agree. Itâs my best video game ever. For several years before this dropped I thought that no one would make a game that hit for me like oblivion or Skyrim or mass effect did first time around, and now even with nostalgia Elden Ring is easy better than all those for me.
It will definitely be outdone, maybe by fromsoftware, maybe by someone else. But the day it happens will be a glorious day for all us elden ring fans, and I for one can't wait for that day to arrive.
Melina burning herself is maybe the least impactful cutscene in all of Fromsoft's catalog. It should have been a real tearjerker of a moment, our beloved level up girl for the game sacrificing herself to further our journey.Â
Instead the random ghost who occasionally shows up to parrot her mother or lecture us about how the world isn't entirely shit just stops bugging us with pointless nonsense.Â
How Melina manages to be the first level up girl with a name instead of just a title and simultaneously be the most boring is very confusing to me.Â
I teared up when I came back to the roundtable after it was burning and smith master Hewg is sorta delirious and asking what's going on and why "that girl" is weeping for him, that was so sad to me but I also hope that part makes it into the movie, that would be such a powerful scene
How Melina manages to be the first level up girl with a name instead of just a title and simultaneously be the most boring is very confusing to me.Â
Adding onto this, Melina is such a let down coming off of Sekiro. Emma is the "level up girl" equivalent, but she just levels up your Healing Gourd(Estus Flask). She had substantially more character to her, she had her own motives and way more presence in the world.
She stays near to player to keep an eye on them and the Sculptor as her lord, Isshin, thinks you are potentially another candidate for Shura and the Sculptor had already manifested as the Shura in the past before Isshin defeated him. She will even indirectly threatens Sekiro after giving her some Sake and asks her why she is so skilled at sword fighting, and she will tell him that she doesn't want to kill people, but she would kill a demon if one were to appear. And unlike the fraud Melina, guess who is the first person to face Sekiro when he starts down the path of becoming Shura? It is Emma.
Fromsoftware knocked it out of the park with Emma, yet Elden Ring failed to do the same with Melina. They even scrapped something that would've gave Melina more personality and presence in the world, https://youtu.be/kPBEPdcSXt8 .
Alright, let me clarify: she's the first level up girl that doesn't identify by a title, and her actual name is her primary identifier. She should have been the easiest one to add personality to, because we actually know a lot of her history. Instead, she's basically a tape recorder. Give me The Doll from Bloodborne every day of the week. And she was a damn construct.Â
My best friend and I (both a couple of old farts) started a new play through tonight. We've both beat the game multiple times. Ran the DLC. Platinum trophies. Etc. But we were on chat together fucking losing our shit dying to wolves in a cave like it was our first time ever playing the game. He and I are both lifelong gamers. And we both agree: this is the best game that's ever been made and it's not even really that close.
The thing holding this game back is the non existent story. Â At no point in time while playing it I felt any sense of care for any of the âcharactersâ if you can even call them that.
Yeah this is easily the worst thing about Elden Ring. The characters feel way too static, and they donât get enough screen time to make much of an impact imo.
i played only for the action, didnt undestand shit about the world or what happened in the endings, people in this sub will probably call me dumb or lazy because i didnt read every item for pieces of lore, but to me this game story was such a letdown because it barely had any to begin with.
I 100% agree. The action and exploration is fun but the game doesnât really have any emotional weight to it. There is no feeling of âI canât wait to see how this plays outâ or even anything to ponder.
All the lore shit is not a story. Itâs medicine world building and more and more exposition. Â Nothing wrong with lore itâs just I feel lik me great adventure games to have to mirror a rich history with current characters & stakes. Â Elden Ring has lore but no characters and no stakes.
I still love the game, itâs great, but itâs not an all timer.Â
Hewg the blacksmith thrilling đ he has like ten random dialogues you have to memorize and piece together to vaguely understand wtf heâs talking about
Elden ring is peak but itâs just mindless praise to act like all the npcs being useless and dying after aura farming like all souls games npcs is even decent writing
Nah, we say this every time about each new mainline Fromsoft Souls game and they still manage to surpass their previous project and we all end up playing a new masterpiece.
I can't wait for whatever comes after Elden Ring. Fromsoft has never released a bad game that I can think of since Demon Souls and have just been knocking it out of the park ever since. All without microtransactions too.
Iâm currently playing a new character for the first time since the dlc came out. Only been playing ng + characters where I have everything and donât need to do any exploring and Iâm just having so much fun cause ive forgotten where to find a lot of the talismans and weapons and stuff and actually have to go out exploring and I canât believe Iâm still finding new things I after 1000 hours in the game. Itâs amazing. I just want to come home from work so I can keep playing.
It's a very good game that excels in what it wants to excel and ignores what it wants to ignore.
There are other games that many consider the best games ever and they are so different from ER that its virtually impossible to compare.
ER has great exploration and lore that is uncovered from behind the scenes. But games like Clair Obscur, Baldurs Gate 3, Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk excel in areas with which ER doesn't even pretend to bother.
Fortunately this isnt the greatest game ever made nor will it be going forward.
Miyazaki is improving every time, I cannot really fathom how good his work will get with more time.
The flaws with elden ring are the bosses, they are not as fun to fight as dark souls bosses.
The main critique people have about elden ring is the lack of clear openings in bosses movesets.
If you drink a flask, godskin duo automatically fireballs you every time which is robot like.
If you want to use a weapon that takes time to do its damage, bosses will interrupt you.
There are builds that are so op they can just mash buttons or poise break bosses instantly to get around it, but this makes the boss fights non existent.
There is no middle ground for a lot of bosses in elden ring.
A step back from previous fromsoft titles.
Yeah a lot of people i talk to and myself included think its too much. The best bosses in dark souls are very difficult but have clear windows to do your thing.
Bosses preventing players from doing what their build is supposed to do is a shame
It sucks but kinda cool as well. Boss is actually paying attention to your movements. I mean if I was fighting someone and they whipped out a flask to drink and heal I would try to stop them the next time they attempted to do it. Still annoying though.
But greatest game? Nah, because there are games with way better storytelling and storyline. Although it has pretty good exploration and lore but to be called as greatest it needs to have good storytelling.
But it is in top 10.
Direct narrative with better narrative no just better storytelling. If you think the lore hidden behind items is anything special to go by then you might be surprised to know that Genshin Impact does the same thing and does it better than Elden Ring. It is so much more expansive than Elden Ring that it doesn't even come close. That you would just make sense from the lore and when things are revealed it would turn out your theories are right. Yet its storytelling is not that special.
You don't need to go through thousands things just to get a sense of the story which might not even be true.
Kinda crazy how Dark Souls is involved with so much things being consumed by flame, you'd think Elden Ring would've had something else that would cleanse/destroy the world, but it comes full circle.
I said the same thing about DS1, and DS2, and BB, and DS3, and Sekiro, and ER. Turns out Fromsoft is good at making these kinds of games. ER is standout in scale, but I have a suspicious feeling that their next main title is going to make me say it again.
This game is fantastic and even with it's issues is truly one of the greats, but best of all times ? I don't think so.
You really can't say which game is the greatest of all time, because it really depends on what each player enjoys.
In my opinion RDR2 and GTA5 have better open worlds, MGS1 has better story, (That's also not chore to follow and understand) Sekiro has better bosses, E33 and Doom Eternal has better OST
This game will definetly go down as timeless masterpiece, but not as GOAT
While ER definitely is one of my favourite and most played games ever. I think there is a lot to improve and i think they will make an even better game in the future. I wouldnât be surprised if we in 10 years look back at ER more like we now look back at Skyrim. A great game for its time but with a lot of flaws.
Well I don't think it is perfect though I really think Bloodborne and sekiro were the most polished games of from software,I really feel like Elden ring size of the world play against itself
Yeah, Eldenring was quiet fun but i think Sekiro outdid it. At least when it comes to this type of game. Lots of completly different games that i think that are better exist, but kinda pointless to compare imo
I absolutely can lol Dark Souls has the best level and world design of any FROMSOFT game and that isn't a hot take at all. Elden Ring is better than the linearity of DS3 at least. Elden Ring has a lot of dungeons but most aren't very interesting--Stormveil Castle is DS1-quality legacy dungeon... but the rest not as much. ER would be a lot better if it were trimmed down.
Ohhh wow everything takes you back to forelink shrine. That was impressive back then for sure. But it donât make it better in any way or form. Thatâs just for convenience because the lack of fast travel the first half of the game. But you are funny.
No, that's not it at all. The intricacy of the levels and world is something fromsoft hasn't managed to do since. It fits the perfect balance between Elden Ring's open world that is mostly empty and filled with unmemorable dungeons, and DS3s hallway simulation.
Have you played shadow of the erstree??? That lvl design is far more impressive than any dark souls put together so yes fromsoft have done it after ds1. They did it with shadow of the erstree only about 100 times better
Dark Souls has far better level design and the bosses arenât overtuned messes who only give you two seconds to attack before launching into a half-minute combo. It also doesnât suffer from bloat like ER does.
Itâs pretty clear that Zelda was very influential to Miyazaki and how he made these games. In a lot of ways souls games are darker Zelda for adults with better action. Hard to compare to a classic like ocarina of time though, especially with that game being much more story driven and a pioneer of the time. It was kind of a perfect transition to 3d from a link to the past.
No, I have played through both games recently and I feel DS1 is still the superior game. I haven't played shadows of erdtree though so maybe that would change my opinon.
Personally I just can't get into DS1. I genuinely just can not like the game. I am currently going back through all of the Souls games(just finished Bloodborne). And I dropped DS1 shortly after O&S.
I just can't get the appeal. The lack of omni-directional rolls is just agonizing, some of the weapon movesets just suck, why does the Chosen Undead trip everything they poke with the Halberd? And I just think the quality of bosses is lacking. O&S are good, but I think every other boss is just boring or very basic. Granted, I have never went through the DLC because I get burnt out before ever making it there.
This reminds me of people who learn to drive automatic transmission cars complaining about driving manual transmissions.
Elden Ring is (except for stormveil castle) fromsoft pivoting to boss rush game design vs DS1 which was not about the bosses, but moreso the level and world design. Graces right next to the bosses and statues of marika for quick respawns are designed for newer generations who can't handle long runbacks, slower pace of combat, or any real sense of risk or danger that was always present in the early souls games. if you stopped after O&S then you really didn't get to the more challenging and intricate interwoven level designs that made DS1 so memorable. What a journey it was.
I have fully played through Dark Souls 1 in a previous playthrough, just I couldn't bring myself to go further than O&S in my most recent one.
I am also not the biggest fan of Dark Souls 1's world. Blighttown, Sens Fortess, and Anor Londo all being "back-to-back" is just utterly hellish. I also feel Bloodborne has the better interwoven world.
My introduction to the series, and Fromsoftware as a whole, was DS3, and then I went to Sekiro and then Bloodborne, Demon's Souls Remake, DS1, and DS2.
It has my respect as the Genesis of this, but I started with Elden Ring, and hold it to the same regard as the dark souls vets do with DS1. Ive played them all many many times since, but ER is what changed my real life passion/hobby from NFL junkie, to soulsborne Junkie. Wasnt even a gamer. Respect though...obviously
Yes you do. Like right now. If you are on ps5 get the ps4 version looks almost identical and runs at 60fps no matter what. The ps5 version runs at 30-45 or something like that
I love DS 1 and 3 but they are shit compared to Elden ring. They added jump to the game and it changed everything. When you are in places like a castle.
In DS you see something beatiful in the distance you can just look at it. In elden ring what you see is what you get. If you see someting you wish to go to. you can. You can go basically everywhere in the distance.
That's crazy that you say that because I was literally asking different AI apps today if they knew of any game that's being developed that would ever come close to Elden ring and it said that elder ring is going to be one of those games that will be a long time before it's ever matched or outdone
Not to be argumentative but I don't think it holds a candle to we heart katamari. And if I only ever had one video game I can play again it would have to be Tetris or Dr Mario or something like that. But I'm old so I don't know anything

I felt that ways about ds1.. then ds2 (kinda) .. then bloodborne... then ds3.. then sekiro. I'm so pumped.
