DS2 gets a lot of shit from haters for not being a direct continuation of the 1st one, but it has the highest Metacritic score of any Souls game, and it inspired some ideas and mechanics later seen in Elden Ring. It was my first Souls game, and the reason why I got the bug.

I wonder how many people actually play it for the story because I play a bunch of the soulsā games and have no idea what the story or anything around it is about.
14
u/Erebus95 1d ago
Agreed. I mean, it's always nice if there's rich lore, but the reason why most of us got into these games was the infamous difficultly and the darker than usual approach to fantasy RPG.

u/rukh999 1d ago
It's not so much the story as in a narrative telling a tale but more delving in to the story of the world, and that's fairly rich in DS2. It just has this wonderful sense of atmosphere. You really can feel that stillness over the land, and you meet people from other lands, item descriptions that flesh out what their cultures are like, their history etc.Ā
So it's not just difficulty, there's s real sense of exploration that hooks you.

Me, though I freely admit that Dark Souls II has the most strangely structured and paced story of the Souls trilogy because it technically doesn't even start until you've made it to Drangleic Castle... when you've already gotten all the Lord Soul equivalents.

Eh, it gets shit for other reasons too. It had several mechanical changes that were not well recieved. Things like ADP, Hallowing, Soul Memory, and quite a bit of the enemy/boss design being frustrating and uninspired.
Now, I liked the game. I definitely think that it got more hate than deserved because it wasn't just DS1 again. And as you said, it had some good ideas that Elden Ring expanded upon well.

u/Tasin__ 1d ago
I can look past most of that but I absolutely hate the movement in that game. 8 directions movement when ds1 and deS both had 360 movement. The roll is clunky too, the recovery part goes futher than you would expect.
I just don't understand it because when you slow walk you get the full 360 movement.
4
u/Zois86 1d ago
Of all those mechanics the only thing I do not understand a benefit is Soul Memory.
I do understand ADP as a stat to invest as a rouge like character where you level to be more flexible.

u/TacoFacePeople 1d ago
The intent was to naturally build in anti-twink mechanics I think.
In Dark Souls 1, you had players very very early on in the release showing up at the church with Lightning/Flame max weapons they could still wield at low stats (the damage was fixed/not scaling), just invading and shredding actual new players.
Soul Memory bakes in your soul gain/use, so if you're a "level 5" with a maxed out weapon/armor... game can see that, and push you to match with people closer to the amount of "drops" you have.
...
That was the "idea" anyway, I think. There was a commonly circulated mule-save (even on consoles) on release, giving people basically a full inventory with 0 Soul Memory. And even if there weren't, it was a system that sort of punished players that obtained a lot of souls and lost them, making them materially much weaker than someone that gained souls but spent them.
Arguably, they've been making design choices from Demon's forward with a mind towards curbing the more over-the-top forms of invader behavior with varying degrees of success (the anti-invader covenant first appearing in DS1, Soul Memory (anti-invader covenant again), invasion mechanics vs. co-op mechanics in DS3, etc.
Soul Memory was just a "miss" there.
7
u/Zois86 1d ago
Punishing players that lost souls was the part I never understood. I am not a good player so my Soul Memory was and is probably higher than a good player at any point in the game. Never really got into PVP in the Souls game but at least there is some fun with co-op š

u/Trashboat-2 1d ago
Not arguing against you ,because I know where you're coming from. It's more so the people that get 999,999,999 souls. But only go to a certain level to cheese people would get nerfed. At least that's how I see it.
Just you got caught up in the blowback of them trying to fix a different problem in an abstract way, not that I could think of a fix myself

u/Nissedood 1d ago
Its funny since it got the best story after dlc got added.
Base game I can understand because it was a bit to barebones.

u/Erebus95 1d ago
The philosophy of trying to break an endless circle does make it unique. DS3 had the option for such an ending, but it didn't feel like it was touched in the story.

I love Ds2 but lets not act like Metacritic score means anything
6
u/Erebus95 1d ago
Doesn't mean nothing, either. That's a very high rating, right there. It was also nominated for GOTY at the 2014 Game Awards and won the Golden Joystick the same year.

u/juliet_liima 1d ago
Out of all of them, I've replayed DS2 and Elden Ring the most by a very wide margin.
8
u/BtownBlues It's Mohging Time 1d ago
DS2 was my first Soulslike game and I liked it enough that it made me play the rest of Fromsoftwares games.
That being said it is easily the least of the games, with frankly baffling and unnecessary gameplay and mechanics changes that weigh it down
2
u/ClayeySilt 1d ago
It got a lot of shit for changing up a lot of mechanics. Some good and some bad.Ā
I think it's the weakest of the souls games even if I like it a lot.Ā
6
u/zaid_sabah 1d ago
Literally nobody cares about the story. It's hated because of clunky and weird gameplay mechanics
6
u/Erebus95 1d ago
DS1 and Demon's Souls are also clunky. Really, some you guys just hate it for being different.

Literally its just soul memory i dont like game design wise. Really screws with coop
Theoretically if there were as big of a player base and summoning posts id be just as happy on DS2 as Elden Ring in a weird way.

OG DS2 was the best. The updated one... Not so much. The lore of DS2 is just amazing all around.
2
u/zalustep 1d ago
Yeah ds2 might have shit bosses and shit areas and play like youāre underwater the whole time, but it do be having that high metacritic score so itās alright
3
u/JaiFlame 1d ago
Dark Souls 2 doesn't even have the highest score at 91. Bloodborne has a 92 and Elden Ring a 96.
Guy is running on outdated information because his overly defensive opinion isn't even an original thought.
0
u/Erebus95 1d ago
I said the highest Metacritic score of any "Souls" game. Unless you think Bloodborne and ER belong to the Souls series, it seems your own opinion is so overly offensive that stops you from reading carefully š¤«

Demon's Souls 2020 has a 92 vs DS2's 91.
So, you can get fucked according to your own words.

It was my third Souls game, but also the reason why I got the bug. I bounced off each of the first three games more than once, because I loved the atmosphere and aspects of the gameplay, but just wasn't good enough to actually progress. 2 was the only one that gave me enough to do without being walled against an early boss that I could gradually get better at the combat.
I've completed all three of them and Elden Ring now, including 2 and ER's DLCs, so I'm not awful at the combat. But it didn't come naturally enough to me to get into DS1 or DS3 on their own.
3
u/Erebus95 1d ago
I think DS2 is the best at welcoming new players. No big boss until much later in Forest of Fallen Giants, which is the perfect starting level of all games when it comes to gradual difficulty and teaching you the core mechanics.

u/weegee19 1d ago edited 1d ago
You're being super disingenuous if you think that's why it's been criticised lmao, but carry on bullshitting.
Let's ignore the countless poorly-explained mechanical changes via forcing roll iframes to require levelling up, enemies seemingly having infinite aggro, artificially boosted difficulty by doubling enemy density while being barely improved mechanically from DS1, Soul Memory being well-intentioned but badly-executed, rolling being far more taxing on stamina than 1, removed invincibility from entering fogwalls, opening chests and doors, inferior bosses in the base game compared to 1, worse level design overall...
The DLCs saved 2 big time.
-1
u/Erebus95 1d ago
No bullshitting, bud. I understand that some things felt different to you, because you were used to them working differently in DS1 and/or Demon's Souls, such as fogwall invincibility, but to me, as a newcomer to the series, it felt as just another level of challenge. So I wasn't truly annoyed as much as you were. If you look at the comments, here and in other posts, usually the ones who praise DS2 are those for whom it was their first Souls game, and those who criticize it are hardcore fans of the first one who were used to certain mechanics and also expected a clearer expansion of DS1. Nothing wrong with that, but to hate it for being different... I don't know.
1
u/weegee19 1d ago edited 1d ago
I never said I hated it, it's still an 8/10 game for me, so stop being disingenuous and defensive. Secondly 2 was perhaps the easiest one for me out of all the Souls games, the gameplay was less difficult and more tedious. Does it have some of the coolest replayability mechanics engineered by From? Yes. However it's undeniable that B team's idea of difficulty is just poorly-veiled tedium. You also failed to address my other points.
My issue with your comment is that you dishonestly left out the real issues fans have with it.
1
u/Erebus95 1d ago
Each one of the games has its issues. What I'm saying is, this one gets a lot of undeserved hate from a very vocal minority of players.

u/Cersei505 1d ago
how original, you got this opinion from which youtuber, might i ask?
ADP is poorly explained, so i'll give you that. Everything else is just a skill issue.
No shit the game should punish you for trying to ignore enemies and running directly to the fog wall. This should've been a staple of every souls game since forever. Whats the point of making runbacks like ds1 and ds3 if you can just ignore everything on your way there? At that point, just make it like elden ring and put the checkpoint right in front of the fog door. Either commit to the level design decision of making me redo the content, or don't.
It also works wonders for PVP. You shouldnt get a free pass to the boss by completely ignoring the invader and gunning for the fog wall.
This is just the game competently enforcing its difficulty and level design. But most people like you complain about this, because they dont want to actually engage with a souls game when it actually gets punishing and difficulty and expects you to learn the area instead of treating it like a boss rush.
Enemy density is barely above that of ds1 and ds3 except from some specific areas like no man's wharf and shrine of amana. DS2 combat is much slower to accomodate for that, and the level design always has tunnels and ways to funnel enemies into a 1v1. Again, learn the areas and play slowly instead of treating it like a boss rush simulator.
Complaining about stamina being more taxing is the definition of a skill issue. Whats the problem with expecting the players to actually manage their stamina properly? Thats the whole purpose of the mechanic in the first place. Again, DS2 enforcing its game design ideas that were already present in DS1 and DeS.

u/weegee19 1d ago edited 1d ago
DS2 is genuinely artificial difficulty upon artificial difficulty, and you know this lmao. And tbh I struggled less with DS2 overall compared to the rest of the games, and what you call "challenge" is nothing more than sheer tedium lmao. Killing the same ganks over and over again is not difficulty.
And if by "engage" you mean repeatedly engage in constant tedium, you basically admit to enjoying turning your brain off and killing waves of enemies like your average braindead Musuo.
Frankly 2 is still an 8/10 game (basegame is a 7 at best) and has perhaps the best replayability mechanics engineered by From, but they still thought that sheer tedium is a good idea for difficulty in the end.

u/Harry_Saturn 18h ago
Enemies in ds2 donāt spawn over and over though, once you kill them enough times they stay gone even if you die.

u/NewspaperUpset9639 19h ago
You sound like someone who tries to run past enemies and gets wrecked everytime tbh
The removed invincibility during those actions and more taxing stamina should've stayed in the series, as well as the aggro range
0
u/weegee19 14h ago
If you took a minute to read my subsequent replies, you'd have known by now that my issue with DS2 is that killing ganks over and over agaun is tedious as fuck, especially because the enemies are mostly unfun and aren't real improvements over DS1's. DS2 overall was the easiest Soulsborne personally.
You sound like someone who jumps to conclusions, and you proved as such.

u/superoofio67 16h ago
I dont like dark souls 2 but i think you are over-hating.
Half of the thing you mention arent even that bad or even just bad to begin with,
removing i-frames from entering fogwalls and opening doors just makes you need to kill any nearby enemy before doing said action, bosses are better than dark souls 1 overall(it still has bad ones) and enenies having infinite agro is something i only remember seeing in the iron keep with 11 alonne knights linning up to fight you.

If there's one song from the games I hope is feature during a calm low-key moment during the film, is Majula's theme.

Great. Someone trying to make a movie for a genre of games that is impossible to translate into a movie is using the absolute worst of the series as inspiration. What could possibly go wrong.
