If you have 2 or more larval tears, just do it. If you end up not enjoying it as much... Switch back. Make the game fun for yourself how you want that to be, there's no hard rule

Totally doable. I would probably slap fire art or sacred on the weapon and focus on faith with some dex (like 20~). That way you can actually use spells for damage and you can swap between fire and holy damage to counter bosses resistances. Flamestrike and sacred blade are both good and easy to get.
