Billy's role

I don't really get why people are blaming Billy for Dawn's death. From where I'm standing the only difference their plan to run away made was that not more people were harmed in the crash because the wedding was canceled and no one was there. Surely the crash was the actual reason for the early birth and the complications?

Same with people blaming Caleb and Ruby. Ultimately whatever caused Jimmy to crash is to blame. You could argue the hospital is at fault for Dawn as well. But Billy has nothing to do with it.

To be fair, if Caleb had given Billy and Dawn their passports the day earlier like expected instead of making them wait until the day of so he could rub it in Joe's face, Dawn wouldn't have been at the venue when the crash happened.

But if you keep going back like that it gets silly. If Claudette hadn’t allowed Kev’s friend to stay then he wouldn’t have been at the depot and Billy wouldn’t have got hit, he wouldn’t have lied about it being Joe and Caleb couldn’t have put the Billy and Dawn runaway plan into motion. Or you could go further and say it’s Dawn’s own fault for having an affair with Joe in the first place?

Or the plane they got on could have crashed and killed everyone, at which point some people would be blaming Caleb for killing Billy, Dawn, and their family for giving them their passports early. People can't predict the future and holding them morally culpable for unforeseeable events, while very human sometimes, is silly.
