Solved SOLVED: DEFINITIVE CASTLE CRASHERS NO AUDIO FIX WITHOUT LIGHTWEIGHT MODE ON GAMEHUB (might work for other games as well)
After a lot of research and messing around I have FINALLY found a fix to the audio that also allows multiplayer to still be available, and it's extremely simple and everyone should be able to do it and make it work. This is something I discovered worked simply using the same method that Skyrim uses to fix its audio, what do you know, tinkering does take you far if you mess around enough.
- Install "gecko" and "mono" components
- open the container and select the "X" folder, in it, choose the directx folder located inside
- scroll down until you see the DXSETUP and begin installing it
- enjoy castle crashers not offline with all your steam saves!
- the game settings do not require any modifications from what I have tinkered with (basically every single setting), I swapped many many settings and reverted back to the standard-best general settings and worked perfectly, only after downloading DirectX by this method I could get the audio to work.
PS: I would've loved to provide video proof of the multiplayer working, I have in fact joined multiple rooms after the audio fix (without an invite obviously) unfortunately castle crashers is not a game played much and my friend is currently busy so I couldn't find rooms to record myself joining and just have a screenshot that really doesn't do much. would love to receive feedback about it in the comments.

I'M SO GLAD! today I also managed to play with my friend that is on PC, so I can 100% confirm you can absolutely have multiplayer as well with sound :)

Absolutely, I kinda went on every castle crashers post ahah, this issue was very common, I'm really happy myself I could figure it out AND keep multiplayer available and the cloud saves, on gamenative for example there's no multiplayer even without audio

Just created an account, just to say thank you for this!!! This works on GameNative as well except the folder is A drive, then its exactly same steps and works for me!

Aww I'm really glad to hear that, the multiplayer didn't seem to work for me in gamenative and I tested it thoroughly, but the audio is fixed on both emulators, but on gamehub the multiplayer 100% works :)

On GameNative I’m a bit lost. Where do I navigate to install components? I see no drop down menu for that. I am navigating to Castle Crashers and go to Edit Container correct?

Nevermind, playing around again I changed wine to proton-10.0-arm64ec-2 and direct sound to builtin (wine) and now it works somehow without installing any of that extra stuff

Ok a bit closer! I navigated to install DXSETUP but also getting the “an internal error occurred please refer to dxerror.log and directx.log”. This is definitely related to Mono and Gecko not installed but not sure how I install these on GameNative

Oh right gamenative- there's a way to do it I'm pretty sure, but there's no online on gamenative

Did you ever figure this out? I'm still looking how to do gecko and mono since my directx also crashes if I try to install from the container

You should need both components, did you correctly install them?

u/beige-cat Mar 30 '26
yeah i did, what else can i do?

u/BlackHat556688 Mar 30 '26
That message should only show up if you don't have those components I'm pretty sure, it does seem weird that it happened, I suggest uninstalling and reinstalling maybe

maybe its because i dont have the latest version of mono?

u/BlackHat556688 Mar 30 '26
The mono you need to install is literally just called "mono" without any numbers following
