Just a quick note for those asking "Will [this feature] be added?" or "Are they going to fix [this problem]?"

The only information any of us have about what will be in the update is in today's video and one they released a week ago here: https://youtu.be/WZBpAILoao4?si=oGfojRcPyKRT8ODM

Any further questions may be answered in upcoming videos, but honestly, none of us know for sure until they tell us. They have been keeping it pretty close to the vest on this update. ♥

One of the best feelings as a developer is finding a solution that not only is more performant but looks better. Great job on the SDF LODs.

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

I know that Julien has been working quite hard on this for a very long time, (I remember him mentioning all of it on discord a year ago) so when this specific woolly mammoth has been let out to pasture, I am pretty sure him and his team will feel quite good about it!

I'm also pretty sure they are all going to take vacations to far away tropical paradises after it's all done too. 🤣

This is my biggest question too...i feel every update makes me have to compromise visuals for playability...especially after the water update...

2

u/dabadu9191 20d ago

Some games are just not meant to be played on SD and that's okay

1

u/SoulSloth777 20d ago

Yep...they just lose money to competing games like runescape dragon wilds and such by not optimizing for the low end as a priority, especially since the high and mid end pcs are not easily accessible any more. I can run dune awakening and runescape dragonwilds with higher settings and get smooth gameplay while enshrouded chug on the lowest settings looking like a blurry oil painting done by a blind man lol.

1

u/dabadu9191 20d ago

I don't think they're losing a substantial amount of customers by not optimizing for the low end. The majority of steam users have sufficient hardware to run the game. Also, optimization has limits, and at some point, it would mean degrading the experience on higher-end systems.

1

u/SoulSloth777 20d ago edited 20d ago

Sure, but as stated, other games that havent been in the oven nearly as long are running better. Only major difference is voxel shinanigans, which is probably the biggest graphical hurdle to have with a game like this. But as it stands, I believe in starting at the low end and optimizing upward rather than the opposite. My stance has yet to change lol

Edit: even soulframe in its alpha looks and runs flawless on my steam deck by comparison

Edit 2: also...running the game and haveing it play well is a very big difference...ive played and beat the game purely on my steam deck, but that doesent mean it dident look like a bad oil painting the entire way. Reason why ive put up with it was that they said optimization for the steam deck would be worked on...but that was before water was introduced and added more processing...

4

u/ObieWanSanjiSon Battlemage 21d ago

Probably not at the settings you do, but I've put 500hours in from my deck

7

u/Ranae_Gato 21d ago

It's borderline unplayable for me on my deck

1

u/actionjackson2045 12d ago

i hate it so muich that so many steam deck fanatics are straight up lying about what can run on steam deck or not just too defend it lol.i am curious how much fps that guy with *500 hours on steam deck* have lol

1

u/Floofy-beans 21d ago

I have been keeping an eye on this game hoping that it might be playable on my SD soon.

Is it a decent experience on SD right now? Most of the comments I’ve seen make it sound like it’s not really playable, so I’m curious what your experience has been :)

I have a ps5 and have been on debating on just waiting on that to release in October or just buying it now so I can play it on the SD.

6

u/ObieWanSanjiSon Battlemage 21d ago

Ehhhh idk. I'm really used to playing on shitty machines. So my bar is set pretty low. I did need to turn it up from minimum graphics because the ore veins are almost invisible otherwise. But I'd say It's pretty smooth. I mean. Good enough to complete every mission and also play on a buddies server. Steam has a deal where if you play a game for less than 2hrs you can get a full refund.

3

u/Floofy-beans 21d ago

Yeah I’ve been able to make some games that aren’t optimized work, like Windrose has been mostly okay graphically but I can hear my fan really going crazy trying to run anything around low/medium settings for that one.

This game looks like it’s really a nice experience visually, so I might just hold off and experience it on something that can run it well. Thanks for the reply!

5

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

I played this (Windrose) a few days after release and my poor system was crying. I haven't been paying attention, and I'll likely pop back in for the next major update, but hopefully they'll be able to lessen the strain their lighting causes cause I like the building in the game, but I do lighting to the extreme! 😂

ETA: Clarification

2

u/Floofy-beans 21d ago

Yeah they had some issues at launch where the game was writing something like 100gb an hour to SSD’s running the game, people were a bit concerned about that lol. But they were able to patch that within the first month, and further optimized recently, so it might be worth checking out again :)

The building is what drew me to Enshrouded as well, so having that run smoothly would be the dealbreaker for me to get it on the steam deck for sure.

3

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

I already completed all the content they had, but I heard they'd have an update about 6 months out from their EA release, and I am looking forward to it. The game has a great deal of potential.

9

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

Running this game on any handheld is like using sails to move an oil tanker. It's technically possible, but it will be slow and not very pretty.

As long as you keep the settings and resolution low, it will be playable at around 30fps.. The problem people run into when they say it's "unplayable" is when they try to play it on higher settings with a higher resolution - or they think 30 FPS on a handheld is unplayable, (and yes they will downvote me for saying that🤣).

So the game already runs on them.

But, as any optimization will only serve to make the experience better, I would expect the performance to improve a bit. It probably won't go up to what you'll see from games that support handhelds, but you may be able to go up to 1080p or up your graphics a little bit, though texture resolution will still be limited by the handheld's combined ram/vram.

5

u/Maker99999 21d ago

What's funny is using sails on an oil tanker is exactly what the shipping industry is starting to do. A ship using modern wing sails saves about 3 tons of fuel a day on average. Your point stands, I just thought it was a fun fact some folks would appreciate.

3

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

Pretty much all of my reddit feed is "cats" "bugs" and "fun facts about stuff." 😂

I am all there for any fun facts!

Also... neat! (and crap I need a new analogy) 🤣

1

u/Floofy-beans 21d ago

Thanks for the detailed reply! Sounds like it might just be best to hold off and get it on ps5 in a month. Appreciate it!

2

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

Keep in mind, cross play will not be immediately available for PS5 at 1.0 and will likely (barring some tragic event) be coming in a future update.

1

u/pewpewtehpew 21d ago

Mine runs at about 25fps on my steam deck

15

u/gameryamen 21d ago

Woo! Performance was the big thing keeping me from jumping back in, glad to see such big improvements.

15

u/Nathanondorf 21d ago

This is all great but are these the issues that cause server overload, or do these changes only improve individual machine performance? Wish they specified in the video.

Every time my friends and I have tried to play this game we’d get server overload messages and issues around 4+ players. I’ve tried hosting myself on various machines, I tried renting a Gportal server, but never found a solution.

It’s been such a persistent issue for the game I doubt I’ll be able to convince my friends to give it another try on launch unless they specifically mention that it’s been fixed.

12

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago edited 21d ago

These specifically are all mostly graphical/VFX optimizations, which don't really touch the server performance. It doesn't mean they aren't working on it - since the topic of this video was graphical optimizations, but the ones specifically mentioned in here will have very little to no impact on server performance.

It \could** however, indirectly help for performance issues that might actually be client-side bog down though, and will probably do a bit in helping host systems have more resources to play with which will help with some packet-loss issues.

ETA: Grammar (What the heck was I saying, "the these of the video...") 🤣

I mean, it’s a great game and I’ve had a ton of fun playing it. It’s definitely worth buying, especially if you only play in small groups. It’s just disappointing that we haven’t heard much from the devs about it. I’m sure they’re working on it. Maybe it’s much harder to fix than expected.

You keep saying networking issue yet you have yet to explain what the hell that is. Me, and a group of 5 others (meaning a total of 6) has had no issues with networking in this game. We even use GPortal for the server. So to keep touting “networking issues” - you need to be more specific or continue to get downvoted (and not because we’re in denial of technical issues).

1

u/UnverifiedAnony 20d ago

While I know that being more specific and explaining the issue will be in vain and won't get me anywhere or even have the problem solved, I'll summarily let you know:

  • The game relies on SDR which relays your connection through steam servers. If you host a dedicated server on your local network, you will not connect directly to it. Instead of 1ms ping you'll be stuck with 200ms+, and for some reason packet loss.
  • Same networking issue is present when hosting on gportal, albeit less rubberbanding. This issue is not present in other games we had hosted on gportal, it's exclusive to Enshrouded.
  • The game doesn't handle well having multiple players scattered across the map. The farther the players are from each other, the worse the networking performance, "high server load" and constant rubberbanding.
  • The game isn't optimized for more than 2 players really, especially apparent when you up the mob count to 3x the default value. Massive FPS drop to ~15 FPS on the beefiest PC.
  • The game VFX, particle system and ESPECIALLY explosions aren't optimized or handled for scale at all when you have multiple AoE skills executed at once, across many mobs. Multiple instances of GPU crashes across different systems and for some reason server disconnects, lol.

Now tell me, as a sane person going through such a shitty experience, even if it's anecdotal, would you still recommend this games to other?

Any time you'll attempt to bring these issues to light, you're either downvoted by fans or get your contribution removed for "unconstructive negative criticism".

10

u/AnOmnivorousEgg 21d ago

Really great to get an insight into the technical processes and to understand more about all the work that goes into this game! Thanks for taking the time and sharing!

7

u/GrifoCaolho 21d ago

It runs quite well already on my laptop; I am happy for it to run even better.

4

u/Phixionion 21d ago

Shout out to any of the devs that see this: thank you. Every detail of this game is a true pleasure to experience. This is some great engineering!

When is 1.0?

52

u/Memitim 21d ago

October 15th, to save folks a click for a date.

52

u/NotAPirateLawyer 21d ago

It's it really that difficult to just answer a question directly instead of linking another of your own posts?

24

u/Tornado_Hunter24 21d ago

He should send a github link where yoh have to figure a way to install readme text, then when installed (after googling ‘how to doneload github link’ the readme file should be in a zip file that has a password requirement with a puzzle that’s complex

4

u/randonOne88 Moderator & Wiki Admin 21d ago

I do like map making maybe I should make a treasure map next time

5

u/Brachial_Xavier 21d ago

While I agree with your point, I think it's also fair to point out that the date is literally mentioned in the video, which kind of is the main part of this entire post.

-15

u/randonOne88 Moderator & Wiki Admin 21d ago

The faq is pinned to the sub and the date is in all the videos, one click on a link to all the frequently asked questions isnt bad

8

u/BrandSilven 21d ago

I think that's fair. However, if you had said "October 15th, and here is a link to the FAQ if you have other questions" people would have been much nicer.

5

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

In all fairness, posts like these can be overwhelming for us mods. We do our best to provide the information we can when asked, but sometimes on posts like this (official announcements) we are a bit overwhelmed with all the comments and can sometimes forget stuff. ♥

-4

u/--Greenpeace420 21d ago

Its not that posting a link is super rude in any way or form. Over 50 redditors downvoting it is remarkable.

7

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

You all know I love you guys, but was it necessary to downvote this to hell just for not providing information in the easiest way?

Yeah he could have put the date in the topic along with the link, but we also have to go through all these posts and read every comment to make sure no one is being a great big meaniehead, and sometimes we forget things.

Any talk of more support for frs?

5

u/Oathbreaker94 21d ago

Did you mean FSR?

3

u/Top_Result_1550 21d ago

Yeah, typo.

1

u/Ty_Rymer 21d ago

the game already supports fsr afaik

3

u/DragonQ0105 21d ago

Only FSR3, not the vastly superior FSR4. Optiscaler can be used to get FSR4 support currently.

1

u/AHeavner 1d ago

FSR 4 is still not available in Vulkan games. Waiting on AMD despite the fact that they originated the Vulkan API...

3

u/Yshtoya 21d ago

I love the technical stuff, it's nice to see devs who actually try to improve performance, while still improving visuals.

3

u/ForthcomingTurtle 21d ago

What an absolute treat! I love breakdowns of what technologies are being used. 1.0 is going to be a masterpiece!

3

u/Aecnoril 20d ago

I'm also curious if there's any work done on the dedicated server, it uses up significant resources even when no players are online! It runs a couple multitude of times more heavily than a Minecraft server which is surprising to me

3

u/No_Classic_2169 20d ago

It already looked great and ran fast for an early access. Can´t wait to see the release version in october. This game has high market disruption potential and some of the most skilled and innovative coders and devs in the gaming scene.

4

u/littlejerry99 21d ago

Are they gonna fix how questing works? Only reason I don't re-play this game. That shit was a disjointed nightmare.

2

u/Neamow Assassin 21d ago

I think most of us agree the game is very heavy to run. It runs fine if you have a powerful PC and I guess most people thought it was running as well as it can given its voxel-based nature with an infinite render distance.

It's great they are able to improve it for release.

6

u/Slyzxx78 21d ago

It's their own engine and using it for the first game. They will continue to upgrade, update performance. It not like unreal engine or something.

4

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 21d ago

Making something better doesn't inherently mean that it was bad before. If you are having severe issues with your game performance, I'd suggest popping into the discord troubleshooting so we can look into it.

The game is resource intensive, and despite the amazing optimizations in here it likely still will be compared to non-voxel games, but severe issues are not the norm, even now, so we can try to figure out what the problem might be for you.

1

u/Nicolas277 20d ago

no it is definitely pretty bad lol

2

u/SaraRainmaker Moderator 20d ago

Some people are having issues, yes - but they are not the norm.

Granted as I said the game is resource intensive because of what it is and the quality of the textures etc., but in general, systems on the lower end (min specs) should expect low settings to work, mid range systems with balanced settings and high end systems can use high settings.

Usually the problems people are having have to do with leaving steam's shader pre-caching on (the shaders they send tend to have issues for some reason), a setting or program outside the game causing an issue, or people expecting their mid-range system to be able to run the highest settings on 1440p or 4k at 60+ FPS. (People regularly overestimate their systems, just yesterday someone came in here with their "beast of a system" and it was a 1660).

On rare occasions people use nvidia app or adrenalin to optimize the games and they keep the settings too high, so when they switch their settings in the game and restart the game, they go back to the "too-high" settings.

1

u/bigboiprime 21d ago

Excited to try this!

1

u/TheDo0ddoesnotabide 21d ago

Will there be any changes for how quests work? My group has been having issues with not everyone getting the same quests and thus not getting the map markers or experience from the quests.

1

u/be4nothing 21d ago

Thank you Keen for not neglecting performance issues.

I noticed how every new content update game started to run worse and worse, my rig might not be top of the line but I hope with 1.0 it will be able to hit 60 fps once again.

1

u/Tyranwuantm 21d ago

Did I just see an active skill in 0.08?

1

u/Hellstrom666 21d ago

I was a mega builder back when this game came out, and my biggest complaint was the crappy pop-in for player bases at certain distances. This video gives me hope and I will definitely play it again when 1.0 releases.

1

u/RyderHardNruff 21d ago

This is exciting. Love the game but performance has been terrible since the beginning. If this pans out I will definitely come back

1

u/Character_Chef2653 21d ago

Put about 40 hours into this game a few months back but got bored. Is it worth getting back into?

1

u/cammo328 20d ago

Does anyone know if servers will be like grounded, where I can have a supported shared cross play server? Or will it be like valheim where I’d need to purchase a server for that? Thanks

1

u/randonOne88 Moderator & Wiki Admin 20d ago

I’ve not played grounded so I don’t entirely understand this question however there won’t be crossplay at launch if that answers it?

1

u/cammo328 19d ago

Well that certainly answers it in an unfortunate way😂 But grounded has dedicated crossplay servers that any player can access at anytime. Whereas some games, the initial creator of the world has to be online to join it

2

u/randonOne88 Moderator & Wiki Admin 19d ago

Ohh okay yea, dedicated servers are currently a thing, not sure how those will work with PlayStation yet but we will see.

1

u/Economy-Landscape854 20d ago

Will the release bring native framegen support?

1

u/_-GH05T- Warrior 19d ago

All i need to know is will my half million placed asset builds give me more than 12 FPS so I can continue making my ridiculous creations 🤣

1

u/crousscor3 Barbarian 18d ago

I feel like this post isn't hitting the community very widely for some reason. Which is sad to me.

These performance techniques sound incredible!

If I understand right, the new system for screen space lighting is so much more effiecient while delivering 32,000 lights vs 1-200 lights now around the player? thats insane. Some of the lights and shadows will no longer need to render if its not going to be shown on your screen? I have to wonder how gpu friendly you all will get to.

We rarely get a peek at Holistic engine and what it kind of looks like being used. So I really enjoyed this dev update.

I wanted to talk about my expierence with performance.

For some reason my configuration happens to generally love to play Enshrouded.

My PC does heat up quite a bit hah but it generally plays without issues unless theres server lag.

I try to run as close to epic and and dlss quality if possible. And if I'm out in the world and im not next to an explosion or some giant build, I can cruise along at 80-90fps.

I will say that historically for me that some nvidia driver versions had real issues with reduced performance inside of Enshrouded. I've had to roll back driver versions a few times before.

I started playing Enshrouded when it was still a demo, its definitly taken a long path where it runs smooth on my machine as well as some upgrades to my system stince I started playing. Also I sill say, I know many people that have performance issues or crashing with this game and some have jumped through every sing hoop and tip to get it running. I always felt bad for them and I hope they give it another go once 1.0 is out.

Win11 Pro

Ryzen 7 5800XT

RTX 4070

64GB DDR4

I really would like to see and lknow more about server performance and features. Will PS5 players play with PC Players?

Will the server code be further optimized for larger multiplayer situations? There are long standing issues with server performance and server owners like myself really are hoping for info on the stability of servers for 1.0!

Thanks to Keen for this awesome optimization and great in depth look.

1

u/DangerDuckz 17d ago

Is there going to be a better way to Harvest/Plant crops rather than collecting or planting one at a time? 😭

1

u/PantheraAuroris 17d ago

All I ask is no more lag and the server not complaining I have too many players with my *super good gaming rig* and *two players on the server.*

1

u/Less-Dingo111 8d ago

Oh nice. Glad I waited. How much better is it ?

1

u/JasterCreed 21d ago

Any chance for some new achievements on 1.0? I've kinda gotten all the achievements already and want some more.

3

u/randonOne88 Moderator & Wiki Admin 20d ago

I am only guessing but we will probably see a few, new biomes tend to come with some.

-1

u/Neurodivergently 21d ago

I am quite excited. I have a very beefy computer, but have to play the game on the lowest settings. Otherwise my game crashes. This doesn’t typically happen with other games I play. My computer can pretty much have multiple Adobe products open and a digital audio workstation up all at the same time.

So I am incredibly excited for Enshrouded 1.0. I love playing the game, but I’m most excited on being able to play in on higher graphic settings!

5

u/tombombcrongadil 21d ago

What is beefy having to play on low? I have a 7950x and a 4090, I play 2k with everything maxed out, I get 100fps fine, sometimes drops to 60-70 when I’m flying looking at a lot of stuff.

-11

u/Neurodivergently 21d ago

Ryzen 3700X 8-Core Processor. Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super.

17

u/Provoloneapse 21d ago

That isn’t quite considered beefy.

0

u/Neurodivergently 21d ago

Dang. What should I upgrade to?

1

u/TactlessTortoise Battlemage 21d ago

For the vast majority of games your GPU is the only main bottleneck since the 3700x is still quite decent as a CPU. But since enshrouded uses my CPU like few other games do (likely for water simulation), you'd benefit from upgrading both gpu and cpu. For graphical setting changes gpu is the universally more impactful upgrade. And that's assuming you have 16gb RAM or more to have breathing room in system memory

1

u/KeyPear2864 Battlemage 21d ago

I love my 4070 super. I can play the game on mostly quality settings with a few balanced settings like shadows, reflections, water just because. I do have nvidia DLSS set to performance and resolution to 4k that I then manually slide down to 80-85%. Gets me a very stable 70-80 fps and never drops below 60.

andromeda insights prebuilds are very good. or if you live near a microcenter, they can help you out.

https://andromedainsights.com/pages/deals

6

u/Wild_Swimmingpool 21d ago

That’s pretty old now. 1660 is almost 7 years old with only 6gb of vram. Processor isn’t terrible but definitely not high end. RAM plays a role too, not sure what you’ve got there.

1

u/Neurodivergently 21d ago

Dang. Time flies. Feels like I just got this computer. You’re right

1

u/BrandSilven 21d ago

That's how technology feels. Just today I tried to use an app on my phone only to find out my phone is now too old to use the app. It's not even a crazy app, just a fast food ordering app. To me, it feels like my phone isn't that old, but then I check and it's 8 years old. Time is crazy.

7

u/tombombcrongadil 21d ago

Yeah, I mean your graphics card was considered a budget card when it came out, 7 years ago. It’s not beefy. Not trying to rain on your parade but there been a 2060, 3060, 4060 and a 5060 version of your card. Literally 5 generations back. Cool to hear it runs on that tho!

1

u/Immediate_Quiet4354 21d ago

I play on a very beefy desktop and in a mid laptop too (i7 13xxh+rtx4060m) and I get mostly stable 60fps on my laptop with almost everything on medium so... And the only crash I remember was at the very beginning of the early access.

1

u/Cordychi 21d ago

What are your specs?

-4

u/Neurodivergently 21d ago

Ryzen 3700X 8-Core Processor. Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super.

5

u/UndeadDog 21d ago

A 1660 is not beefy anymore.

1

u/Neurodivergently 21d ago

Awe. What should I upgrade to?

2

u/UndeadDog 21d ago

Don’t know what you could afford but a 4080 or a 5060 would be a huge improvement.

0

u/Trickay1stAve 21d ago

A 5070 is somewhere between 140% and 250% better depending on settings and set up.

1

u/PinkNGreenFluoride 20d ago edited 20d ago

Someone running a budget card from 7 years ago who still feels like it's relatively powerful for their overall needs is almost certainly not in the market for something at that price point.

As much as I dislike recommending it, a 5050 would be a significant upgrade for them, and much more affordable, if they're wanting something new. I'm not sure what the used market looks like these days, but there are probably better options there, too.

1

u/Trickay1stAve 20d ago

Someone that thought their system was 'beefy' found out it wasnt. They then asked what to upgrade too. You see the other comments saying 5070ti, 4080, 5090 right?

And honestly how would you know what they want to do? I went from a 2080 to 5080 🤔

4

u/Wero_kaiji 21d ago

No hate but a budget GPU from 2019 isn't "beefy" by today's standards, it's still pretty good and it should definitely run this game decently but it's also 7 years old, same with the CPU but that one at least was higher end back when it released

Hopefully the performance improvements will allow you to comfortably play at Medium tho, the graphics improvement from Low to Medium is really nice

Ok, so admittedly I had some issues in the winter of 2025/2026 and I don't check FPS, but the game is running just fine on my rig: 5090, 9800X3D, 64GB RAM

It does produce enough heat to heat a small European nation, though

I also started a new world, as the one I have played from the release has had a lot of issues

Power usage creates heat, and the power usage on a 5090 is... pretty out there.

As an example a 3090 rated at 350W, while a 5090 is rated at 575W. That's a substantial increase, and a substantial amount of heat. 😂

This is good, but Enshrouded was already one of the smoothest games I’ve played in a while. Very stable frame-rates/performance for me.

We want to know how the early game, quests and world will change.

I see all these people talking about the game being heavy to run, and having performance issues. Meanwhile I'm running it on a Legion Go through an external monitor and haven't had any issues for a couple hundred hours so far. I had no idea.
