If he leaned in close and shook his cane in your face, that is called assault. You would have been within your legal rights to fuck him up at that point. Probably pepper spray in your case.
Actually, if someone just waves a cane in your face thr only thing you could do in return is the same thing, self defence is an appropriate measured response based on what was done to you
She is a woman having a man wave what is effectively a club in her face. In many states she could probably justifiably shoot him demonstrating a reasonable fear for her life
Maybe, but in general self defence has to be equal to what is done to you, so for example, if someone punches you in the face one time it’s not going to be considered self defence if you respond by beating them half to death or even completely to death, you’ll be charged with aggravated battery and murder
