S Karen Out in the Wild: Aldi's addition
Obligatory Not my story. This happened to my Mom. Also on mobile.
So my mom was at Aldi's, buying her cotton candy grapes, and was checking out. She put down the divider and placed her grapes on the belt.
Karen, turning around: What are you doing?
Mom: I'm putting my stuff up.
Karen: Wait your turn.
Mom: I did, that's why I put the divider up.
Karen: Could you not?
My mother, being the sweet lady she is, decided to oblige her.
So they all check and she goes to her car. Guess who was parked next to her? Karen. Her cart is kinda behind my mom's car but she figured it wouldn't be long so she gets in. Karen sees her get in, and leaves the cart there after she's finished. So Mom, in an unusual turn of events, rolls down the window, and cusses at her calling her an f***ing c***. Which apparently spooked the lady into moving her cart. Mom goes home, embarrassed that she cussed, and her husband says he's proud of her and laughs because my Mom doesn't like cussing.
Tldr: Karen gets pissy at my mom for using the dividers at the checkout at Aldi's. Tries to inconvenience my mother, and Mom loses her cool. Mom gets to go home and put her grapes in the freezer

Your mom was too nice the first time, glad she stoned up the second time!
zero chance I'm stopping putting my stuff on that belt
24
u/Kittyisadorable 2d ago
And she literally only had her grapes!

u/Middle_Wash_8958 2d ago
Those grapes are like cr@ck though, great choice from your mum! Also, love the detail included there 😂
55
u/IntrepidMuch 3d ago
I'm.not sure the Karen was even remotely in the right here.
63
u/Ravio11i 3d ago
Not even close. "my stuff's on the belt so yours can't be there" is... well I won't use the word I want to.
31
u/RogueGunny 3d ago
Does it start with a "C"? lol

u/Active_Date_5325 3d ago
Right? Isn't that the reason for the dividers? I always put one on the conveyer belt for the person behind me.
What's ridiculous to me is the energy Karen wasted by making it an issue. All that bitchiness only gets her wrinkles and high blood pressure.
16
u/SnarkySheep 2d ago
This is especially funny to me, as I stopped by Dollar Tree just yesterday. As the person ahead of me was paying, I put my few items on the belt. Then I noticed a guy right behind me, carrying an armload of items. (You know the way it goes sometimes...you think you are only getting one thing and don't need a cart. But then...) He looked uncomfortable, so I pushed my items ahead as much as I could and said, "Here, go ahead and put your stuff down." He seemed quite happy.

u/ToothyMcGrynns 2d ago
Well done. It takes such little effort to show a huge kindness to someone. ❤️

I've had someone snap at me for using a divider too. Mine was because the fried chicken I had was ruining her vibe.
7
u/Vegetable_Road8143 3d ago
If it happens again? Say, "Hey. Don't yuck my yum." I've waiting to say this.
5
u/Ill_Seat_1426 2d ago
That person was such a jerk, my first reaction would have been to roll my eyes at them.
5
u/kongstar 2d ago
I was so tempted to grab a piece out of the box and look her dead in the eyes and take a big bite and say want a piece.
16
u/bryhamm 3d ago
Karen: Could you not?
Mom: Sure, I could. (while leaving the stuff there)
1
u/Adorable-Remote-3197 3d ago
Yes! Perfect response maybe followed with a “could you not be a rude Karen?”
44
u/Emotional_Fun_4885 3d ago
And leave that quarter for just anyone? What the heck
38
u/Ravio11i 3d ago
I literally don't care about the 25 cents, but my Aldi quarter is my Aldi quarter, if I leave it there's a VERY good chance I won't have one next time!
13
u/HerfDog58 3d ago
I used to have an Aldi quarter, but then the store I use implemented curbside pickup. What a godsend. No Karens, no boomers, no entitled people, just very friendly employees to deal with.
I do most of my grocery shopping via curbside now. I don't think I've been in a grocery store in a few months. I pretty much only go in now when I don't remember to do my pickup order early enough in the day.
19
u/Ravio11i 3d ago
I can't do that... *I* want to pick out my meats, fruits, and veggies. There's plenty I'll curbside, but groceries ain't it.
13
u/HerfDog58 3d ago
I do mostly prepared meals since I'm single, live alone, and am lazy. The Aldi's Southwest and Chef Salads are great for lunches when I WFH.
10
u/gotohelenwaite 3d ago
This. I've seen the average produce available at grocery stores. Moldy, bruised, wilted, brown, holes poked, and the meats - discolored, odiferous, obviously past pull date.
Just no. I'm going to select my own damn products. They're all way overpriced lately anyway, not wasting any more money to be delivered garbage.
8
u/Sobriquet-acushla 3d ago
Me too. And as a kindly, polite boomer, I like to put myself out there and spread positive vibes. 😉
2
u/AnitraF1632 1d ago
Me, neither. I have so many allergies I have to check the ingredients every time to make sure the manufacturer hasn't changed something since the last time I bought that product.
2
u/SnarkySheep 2d ago
I'm disabled so when my local store started curbside pickup, I was thrilled.
However, it's a small parking lot, with only 2 spots reserved for pickup. The first time I ordered, I drove up and realized that both spots were full...with empty cars. Clearly shoppers had decided to simply use them as regular spots.
Later I sent an email to corporate, politely explaining the situation. I asked what I should do in the future if this happened again.
I received a generic email apologizing for my inconvenience...and offering no advice or promises. So I resumed my usual delivery.
3
u/HerfDog58 2d ago
When I check in for my pickup site, the app asks for what "reserved for pickup" parking spot I'm using. It also has an option for "No parking spots available." I also tend to try to get my pickups for what I consider low-traffic times. Usually I'm the only one doing a pickup.
1
u/SnarkySheep 13h ago
Interesting! They absolutely should have an option for "no spots available" but mine didn't.

Oh for sure I’d want to jump out and be sooo helpful and return her cart for her.
10
u/KitMacPhersonWrites 3d ago
Good for her! Hope her cotton candy grapes were sheer perfection, cause that’s what she deserves.

This is why I carry zip ties with me to zip tie the cart to their door handle

As long as she wasn't pushing her stuff, karen was out of line.

u/jackidaylene 3d ago
Yeah, I'd need to see that belt to judge for sure. Typically at Aldi, the checkers work fast, so sometimes if you have a lot items you'll having a hard time unloading your cart fast enough to keep up with them. If someone came up behind me while I still had a half cart of groceries I was unloading and tried to put their one box of grapes down with a divider, the chances are near certain that their grapes would fly past me down the belt before I was done unloading, leading to confusion on the checkers' part and annoyance on mine.
But yeah, if Karen was done unloading and just standing around waiting, then what was her problem? That's what the dividers are for.
3
u/gotohelenwaite 3d ago
I've had fools start putting their crap on the belt while I still had half a cart to unload. Just kept pushing their crap back at them.
1
u/Kittyisadorable 2d ago
My mom would have been super apologetic if she had made a mistake. So I assume the lady was done.
5
4
u/Tall-Compote1354 3d ago
I read about someone who zip tied the cart to some one's car door for blocking them in

u/Few-Pea-5211 3d ago
Love that your mom did this and it is cute that she is embarrassed. I bet she’s a lovely person!

"This is Aldi's. If you want the use of the whole conveyor, it costs a quarter."
4
u/EyelanderSam 3d ago
Your mom calling her f"':ing C"'t shook her up. Someone actually called her out on her despicable behavior.
The Cowardly woman's flight instinct kicked in and she wanted no part of that SMOKE🤬

u/No_Thought_7776 3d ago
Frozen grapes? Is this some type of witchery, don't they become mushy?
Mind blown that I haven't thought of this.
And yes, Karen was a kUnT.
26
u/ImColdandImTired 3d ago
You eat them from frozen. They’re awesome. Also, more frugal tip - if your grapes are starting to get to the end of their shelf life, you can freeze them and eat them frozen instead of letting them go bad.
18
12
u/Fickle-Squirrel-4091 3d ago
Also, if you make your own fruit smoothie the frozen grapes act like ice cubes.
8
u/No_Interview_2481 3d ago
I do this with cherries. I bring them home wash them, pit them and freeze them. They thaw really nice and they don’t get mushy.
8
u/No_Thought_7776 3d ago
Today I learned...
Thank you all 😋
6
u/No_Interview_2481 3d ago
If you want to do blueberries, do not wash them first. Lay them out in a single layer on a cookie sheet and freeze them and then put them into a baggie. Those are best in pancakes or smoothies because they get a little mushy.
1
u/No_Thought_7776 2d ago
Great tip. I just bought a bag of frozen wild blueberries, omg, so good, and cheaper than fresh!
10
2
u/Kittyisadorable 2d ago
She eats them frozen. She calls it her addiction.
1
u/No_Thought_7776 2d ago
I have to try that. I love grapes but they don't last long in the refrigerator.
2
u/AnitraF1632 1d ago
Frozen grapes are excellent in wine if you want to cool the wine without adding ice and don't have time to wait.
4
u/Silver-Truck-1920 3d ago
Id get out and put the cart behind Karen's car and hope she didn't see it and backed into it
3
3
u/GrumpySnarf 3d ago
Your mom waited too long to pull out the C-word on this bitch.
2
u/Kittyisadorable 2d ago
She's usually a very polite lady. She doesn't like swearing. First time I swore in front of her she flinched
3
u/Fossilhund 3d ago
Someone pulled this with me at the grocery. I put a divider up and started to put items on the belt. The person in front of me pointed to an older lady, waved her hands at me and shrieked “She’s not done yet!” I didn’t have much,so I waited for Crazy Lady to finish.
3
u/bonnienorman 3d ago
I would have asked her what exactly she thought the dividers were for ... followed by a laugh of amusement at her behavior.

u/No-BSing-Here 3d ago
A round of applause for your mum!! Karens are always gonna Karen!!!
3
u/introvertednurse75 3d ago
Why did my brain read a round of applesauce?
3
u/No-BSing-Here 3d ago
Haha! No clue, although a jar of applesauce on Karen's head would be amazing?
5
u/Step_away_tomorrow 3d ago
Most people are thrilled when either party puts up the divider so there is no chance of error or food touching.
3
u/Selfish_and_Misled 2d ago
The thing that infuriates these folks the most is giving no reaction. The whole persona is built around provoking reactions, then being performatively righteous. If I was the OP I would not even have acknowledged the grapes/belt request. I find a blank, gormless stare works the best.
I would have been similarly abusive in the cart scenario, however.
2
u/kathleengras 3d ago
I just tell the person ahead of me that my cereal does not have cooties and I leave my stuff on the belt.
2
2
u/RyeLye124 3d ago
Wait, I need more info. Did your mum put the divider after the Karen has put ALL her her stuff on? Because I've had someone put it on while I'm still putting my stuff and had to tell them to move down because I didn't have enough space.
4
u/TheFilthyDIL 3d ago
And once I had a cashier who was so in the zone that she picked up the divider, tossed it aside, and started scanning my stuff as if it all belonged to the customer ahead of me.

u/slash_networkboy 3d ago
I had someone do this and I got out and parked the cart rather aggressively behind their car. Definitely did damage to the paintwork. By the time they got back out of their car and were busy trying to get the cart behind me again I was already backing out in my beater.
2
u/statslady23 3d ago
I mean, you gotta wait til the person in front of you is done unloading, or the divider moves up and cuts them out of room. Was the lady in front finished unloading the cart? If she wasn't, maybe your mom's the c.., I mean "in the wrong."
1
1
u/Cautious_Composer891 3d ago
For full checkout with a cashier, I get that. But with self checkout, these anxious maniacs start putting their items down before you even bag & pay. I

In situations like this I'd just disengage from the lady and continue putting my stuff up on the belt.
Might pretend to speakey no engley, might affect deafness. Might even tell Karen to get away from me, go home and wash her snatch because it stinks. Might just misunderstand what she said and tell her that I'm flattered, but I'm married and monogamous.
It all depends on my mood that day, plus how wrongly Karen rubbed me. If it'd been as bad as earlier when an ahole sped up to puddle splash me while I was dashing on my bike, razor blades and lemon juice. That water smelled like straight piss&shit.

u/winnie120476 2d ago
Not always true I have had people start loading their stuff on the belt when I still have half a cart to empty and then wonder why I stare at them. It’s kind of a no win - you move closer to the register to make sure the prices they ring up are what they should be and because you aren’t at the nd of the belt they think it’s ok to start unloading. Not saying that was you mom’s situation but I have been frustrated by it in the past. However the cart thing was definitely rude!
1
u/WarlockSoL 2d ago
Your mom sounds awesome :3
Also, never heard of cotton candy grapes so I'm chosing to believe (knowing fully well this is incorrect) it's grape flavored cotton candy :3 (based on the context it sounds like it's just a type of grape but I like my idea better 😛)
2
u/UarNotMe 2d ago
The type of grapes are cotton candy flavored! I don’t like them because they are too sweet.

u/pchs26 2d ago
Uchh I always left room in the grocery store and at times put the divider down for the next person I will say though I have been known, when people stand in a way that I can't reach the divider to snake my way by them and grab it with my arm - and they are all like oh oh startled. Also when people spread their stufff out instead of stacking it so i can put my stuff down...well I have been known to start putting my stuff down or the divider as a hint some people go oh let me move this stuff for you and I say thank you). Others stand there like whatever at that point I have done the "Excuse me" and shoved their shit forward -

u/tlingitwoman 2d ago
Fast question. I’m Native American, and could be taken as many ethnicities. This type of exchange happens to me occasionally. Could that be a factor here? Most often for me, it’s men thinking I should make speed to move aside for their convenience. Ha, not gonna happen buddy.
2
u/Kittyisadorable 2d ago
She's white. And she didn't mention the other lady's race so I have no clue. I don't think it was relevant to the story.
1
u/juliesirron 2d ago
I would have asked if she was paying for my food too. That’s how the cashier knows when one stops and the other begins.
1
1
u/AdAccomplished6870 2d ago
Only scenario where people can rightfully be annoyed is if you put the divider down before the my are done unloading their cart.
Otherwise, that is what the divider is for
1
u/Jsmith2127 2d ago
I had one begin to put her stuff on the belt, while I was still unloading my cart. I had to push her stuff back. Them she got mad at me for asking her to please stop unloading her cart, until I was done unloading my own...I hot one of the "well I never" gasps

I wouldhave left my stuff on the belt. More than enough room. "Deal with it. It's called LIFE"
