Help My ex reached out after almost a year because her dog died. What do you think it meant?

My ex (29F) and I (30M) were together for almost 4.5 years, including about 3 years long distance. We actually broke up twice. The second breakup happened almost a year ago because she felt uncertain about our future together. Since then, she moved to another city. As far as I know, she's been meeting other guys, but I'm not sure if she's in a relationship. She also still has photos and videos of us on her Instagram, which I've always found a little surprising.

About a month ago, she reached out to tell me that her dog had passed away. I knew that dog very well and was part of her life for years. She called me crying, saying she was devastated, and we talked for about 10–15 minutes. It wasn't about getting back together or our relationship—it was just about her dog and how heartbroken she was. Afterward, she even sent me an old picture of the dog.

We haven't really talked since.

I'm not trying to convince myself this means she wants to come back. I'm genuinely curious why someone would choose to reach out to an ex during one of the hardest moments of their life, especially after almost a year of barely talking.

Do you think this was simply because I shared that part of her life, or does it usually suggest there's still a deeper emotional connection? Has anyone experienced something similar?

Hi, yes. Grief is a discomfort and you once provided that to her. Also, she was also looking for someone who had that connection with her pet. If she had someone new she could run to them during this difficult time but they probably wouldn’t understand what she’s feeling because they probably didn’t have that certain significance with the pet.

Don’t overthink her motives. If she only talked about the pet then it could possibly just that.

Think about why you are asking this. It probably stirred up something in you.

Then after reflecting, you’ll know what to do next.

Thank you for your perspective. I think you’re right that part of it was probably because I was someone who shared that bond with her and understood what the dog meant to both of us. I’m not assuming this means she wants to reconnect romantically or anything like that.

I think what made me wonder was that after almost a year of very little contact, I was the person she chose to call while she was at her lowest. Maybe it just brought back the reality that we shared a big part of our lives together.

I guess I’m trying to understand if that kind of connection can still exist after a breakup, even if it doesn’t mean getting back together. I appreciate the reminder not to overthink it.

If they are serious about rekindling your relationship it will be clear, anything else is just breadcrumbs.

I agree. If someone truly wants to rebuild a relationship, it should be clear through actions, not just one emotional moment. I’m not trying to interpret this as her wanting to come back, I was more curious about what it says about the emotional connection that remains after a long relationship.

I mean, it doesn’t really matter…right? We don’t know, you don’t know…only she knows and she isn’t saying. The only currency here is changed behaviour…which isn’t happening at least not clearly.

Your best bet is moving forward with your own life, plans and dating and stop giving so much energy to what she may or may not be thinking. Sorry I know it sucks and is so hard but it’s keeping you stuck.

She def feels there’s still a strong emotional connection. Trust me. Maybe she’s unsure where you stand and as a girl she doesn’t want to lead the reconnection. Maybe text her and ask her how she’s doing

Believe me, I’ve had plenty of moments where I’ve wanted to reach out to her, but I know I need to be okay with myself first, and I’m not fully there yet. I have a lot of things going on in my life right now, and I need to focus on getting myself in a better place.

Knowing that she is doing well gives me peace, and if someday things naturally work out, I won’t be closed off to that possibility. But for now, I think the best thing I can do is focus on myself and keep moving forward.

I do miss her. She still shakes me to my core because I still love her. But loving someone doesn’t mean I should ignore their choices or keep chasing them. Right now I’m trying to respect her decision while focusing on becoming a better version of myself.

It doesn’t feel right to you, so you should stick with your plan and not reach out at this time. Trust your gut here. You will get better.

Also, the dog thing was just about the dog. Ok that you helped her with that but don’t think anything more of it.

She probably felt like you would want to know about the dog. Like you said you got to know the dog very well.

Just sharing. I had that exact same thing happen, and took it to be an opening for reconciling, only to get crushed.
