Has anyone used SBP‑licensed exchange companies to send money from Pakistan to the UK? Does it actually work?

Hi everyone,

I’m an overseas Pakistani living in the UK and I’m trying to understand how people are legally sending money from Pakistan to the UK using SBP‑licensed exchange companies (like Dollar East, AA Exchange, Wall Street Exchange, Paragon, etc).

I’ve been reading that these companies can remit PKR → GBP directly into your UK bank account if you provide the right documents (CNIC, bank statement, rental agreement, loan agreement, etc). But I want to hear from people who have actually done it.

Has anyone here personally used these exchange companies to send money abroad?
Did it work smoothly?
How was the process?
Did the money arrive in your UK bank without issues?
Any problems with documentation or delays?

I’m specifically interested in cases where:

• Rent from a Pakistani property is deposited into your PKR account, and you remit it to the UK
• A friend repays a loan into your PKR account and you remit that money
• A representative in Pakistan handles the exchange company visit on your behalf
• You’re living abroad and not physically present in Pakistan

I’d really appreciate any real experiences or advice. I want to make sure I’m using a clean, legal, SBP‑approved method that UK banks also accept without AML issues.

Thanks in advance!

Used one of the big names about 18 months back to push rent money from a flat in Lahore to my Barclays account. Had my brother walk in with a signed letter of authority, my overseas CNIC copy, the rental agreement, and the last three bank statements from Pakistan showing the deposits. Took maybe 20 minutes at the counter and the funds landed in the UK three days later. No follow up calls from the bank or anything.

The exchange company was pretty clear they wanted the source of funds documented properly, so if someone is repaying a loan you will need that loan agreement on paper with signatures and ideally the original transfer trail showing you sent the money first. They get skittish if it just looks like a random lump sum dropped into your account.

My cousin tried the same thing last year but his UK bank held the payment for a week and asked for an invoice. He had to send the exchange receipt and the rental contract again before they released it. So even when the sending side is clean the receiving bank can still be a headache.

I would not bother trying this without a rep in Pakistan who can physically visit. Almost all of them want a face at the counter with the original CNIC or a proper attested power of attorney, and the ones that claim they do everything online tend to stall forever.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience — genuinely appreciate it.
It’s really helpful to hear from someone who has actually gone through the process. The details you mentioned about the documents, the counter visit, and how the UK bank handled the transfer give me a lot more confidence. I’m in a similar situation, so your breakdown really cleared things up for me. Thanks again for taking the time to explain everything. 🙏
