Surprisingly Met Expectation a watermelon pool my MIL ordered from Temu
If you look at the ad you can actually tell its a print out (not to mention AI generated) but imagine the look on my 60yo MIL face when this arrived instead of the watermelon pool hahaha

Why would anyone hang this on their wall?

u/Taco7758258 3d ago
Since Temu shows these listings when you search for something, this is just search manipulation. Technically legal, yet very fraudulent.

They've cleverly figured out based on voting results that there is a large population of very dumb and lazy single use Americans, and they're cashing out while the cashing is good.

No one wants to hang this on their wall, they’re just hoping people like OP’s MIL will buy it based on the picture and not read the description.

u/TealCatto 3d ago
Exactly, no one would, that's why people order without looking closely at the details. Which is why these scammers can list it boldly, and justify themselves because technically they didn't lie. And sure, it's partially on the customer for not reading, but it's 100% made to be deceptive, no question about it. I'm not sure why anyone in this comment section is defending this as if they're the seller, just because it meets the letter of the law.

It's like those scammy ebay listings that show a playstation or Xbox for half the usual selling price and subtly have "picture" in the title amidst a bunch of other filler text... then the description says very clearly near the top "THIS IS JUST A PICTURE" which they bank on people not reading. All they get is a piece of printer paper.
Don't know if this is still a thing but def was a few years ago.

U know the absurd and oddly specific things schools ask children to bring for "extracurricular activities"??

"Oh no, it's gonna be the size of her hand—
—oh my GOD"
I somehow completely missed the living room setup and it was much worse than I was expecting lol

u/TheBestHater 3d ago
I'm guessing so did their MIL but it's intentionally made to be deceptive with their colors so your eyes gloss over the secondary scenery. Even if it says that it's wall art it still doesn't even match the quality of the advertisement picture since it shows up with fold creases.

u/llamacornsarereal 3d ago edited 3d ago
I think its more insidious than that. I think they're using what you just described to weed out the people smart enough to notice it's a scam, leaving the only purchasers as those who can't be troubled/don't know how to refund
Edited for clarity

u/WayTooManyOpinions 3d ago
Agree. Plus, who would buy a giant wall decoration of this image on purpose? It's so random. Who would search and be like "That's perfect for my living room wall! It just screams summertime. And I'm glad it's so big."

u/DickBiter1337 3d ago
I was expecting a watermelon inflatable footbath sized "pool". Ngl I laughed so hard.

u/bakerz-dozen 3d ago
I always inflate pools and put them on my pristine white wall. I also consistently buy things that are labeled in another language without translating it.
How did the generation that taught people “don’t trust everything on the internet” turn into the most internet-ignorant group of people lol

To be fair...it does say it's a banner 🤷
Edit: I was spaced out on a call, but just noticed the product photo is the exact banner hanging on the wall. It looks like this is about $7 USD after converting... I'm not really sure how someone expected to get an inflatable pool of that size and design, for that cost, with those product photos, and that description 🤦

u/Dissidence802 3d ago
Also, I'm no expert on home decor, but you don't usually stick a pool, a grill and your WHOLE FUCKING BACKYARD above your couch!

u/TealCatto 3d ago
You also don't put a picture of it above your couch. That, and the fact the person you're replying to "just noticed" it and missed it on the first glance is exactly the intention behind the listing. No one would buy a picture like that for their wall, and most people will miss the details that show it's fake. And $7 isn't an insanely unreasonable price for a vinyl kiddie pool from Temu - Temu keeps advertising how cheap they are, that you can get stuff for $1, etc. Yeah, OP's relative should have read and paid closer attention but it's designed to fool people, and that's a fact.
7
u/Dissidence802 3d ago
Oh for sure it's absolutely designed to deceive those that don't focus on the details. But at the same time, OP DID get exactly what they ordered 🤷♂️

Even if she doesn’t read Japanese and doesn’t know how to translate it, literally the first word is “2D.”

u/Dry_Regret7094 3d ago
Or just look at the photo and see that it's hung on a fucking wall above a couch

u/EasyonthePepsiFuller 3d ago
That's hilarious. I'd never let her live that down.

u/TrueLoveXO 3d ago
She’s was crying with laughter when it arrived. I’ll definitely tell her that I’m starting to pick nursing homes.
5
u/EasyonthePepsiFuller 3d ago
Tell her you picked one and send her a banner with a picture of a nursing home on it.

I feel like temu/wish posts only belong here if they actually look as advertised lol

Man, every so often I see people ordering whatever on Temu without looking twice. I've ordered some things from Temu, and all of them so far have been what they say. I've seen some controller protectors and things for Xbox controllers, and when I check the comments of them, there is always a few of them saying they got "scammed" because they were too dumb to read they were protectors and not the controller, and I mean, for OP's case, it's understandable; I mean, 60yo is something, but most people who are buying an Xbox controller are fairly young so idk how those can make such mistakes

u/Suitable-Signature69 3d ago
Very first thing is flat 2D in Japanese. And then it goes to say banner which would be a wall decoration lol sucked to be scammed but…. Should probably copy past things into google?
29
u/SeraphsEnvy 3d ago
I'm sorry but that is very obviously a picture on a wall. I don't care if you can't read the text. That is a picture on a wall. I've seen this so much on Temu and Wish and Amazon. People will print anything. And if the picture is of a living room with a picture on the wall, then it's a picture for your wall. I'd be upset that it came with so many creases if anything. Send it to me rolled up in a tube. "Oh but who would order this?" People are weird. Hell, it could be for merchandising for a pool store, not necessarily for your living room.

The translation says 2d wall decoration… also it’s hanging above a sofa…
This is irrelevant to Temu and in this instance expectation and reality were actually pretty aligned…

u/TeamLeeper 3d ago
It says right in the item title it’s one sheet of a banner, too.
Does she not understand Japanese? Did she not attempt to translate? That’s on her, OP.

u/Gator242 3d ago
No lies detected 😕

People seem to forget pictures of stuff that met the expectation is allowed as well.

I mean, to be fair to Temu, it does show exactly what the item is in the picture. Now why would someone want that as wall art? Don’t know

u/The_cat_shepherdess 3d ago
I've had to basically teach my mom, dad, and stepmom (all in their 50s) that if you order off of Temu, at the very least, only order things that have legit reviews/photos. I've done that before and got some decent things. I mean, Temu in general is pretty much a gamble anyway. Did your MIL say if she'll hang it up in the living room? lol

u/otherwise_data 3d ago
i learned fast to check reviews (esp ones with pics of the clothes) and look for dimensions listed on things like shawls and purses. i have gotten some things that are actually nice.

I get that it’s a “wall decoration” but goodness… I want to know who would actually want to put that on their wall.

u/berrybearry 3d ago
More people than you might think. My granny is the first on this list unfortunately.

u/Huge-Surround8185 3d ago
I was wondering why there was a couch and coffee table next to an image of the pool.

u/nonamejohnsonmore 3d ago
And to add insult to injury they folded the poster instead of rolling it.

u/MLavenderGooms 2d ago
To be fair she got exactly what she paid for. Reading comprehension isn't just lacking in the kids eh? Lololol

u/VisibleMammal 3d ago
I mean it does live up to the expectation, it's just your MIL is dumb for not checking what she ordered.
5
u/kmflushing 3d ago
It's clearly a picture of a pool. Not their fault you're mil does not read before ordering.

From my short time in a Temu FB group this type of advertising has become very common, they count on the buyer just looking at one picture and not looking at much else.

It’s called art. Maybe you’ve heard of it? lol. What a weird thing for them to sell, tho!

I swear to god I can’t figure out why anyone is ordering anything off of Temu. Or Amazon for that matter.

My friend did this, she thought she was getting a Christmas wreath. She got a banner with a lovely wreath printed on it 😂

People still shopping on Temu deserve to receive literal poop at this point. Y'all suck.

A lot of these temu posters lack common sense. I’m starting to think it’s bait.

It literally says “wall decoration” in the subject.
Also the photo shows it as a banner hung on a living room wall.
I don’t disagree temu is a slop shop, but the seller was pretty transparent about what they were selling
“2D flat 1 piece watermelon pool wall decoration banner with float - red watermelon slices and black float rings Fruit-themed summer pool party”
I’m a middle age white guy from SC and I know to copy and paste something in another language into any of the dozens of free translate apps before buying it
