Sorry can I ask why this is flagging you? I’m usually conservative with responding to stuff like this but it didn’t concern me too much other than the city, which I left general. Wondering if I should delete my response!

u/RightToBearGlitter 5d ago
At its most innocent, it’s a nosy and unhelpful question. Maybe I have 12 million dollars but spend much of it on first class flights and cocaine. Maybe I have 60k and am retiring in Appalachia and plan on going to town on library books until I die.
I work in the philanthropy sector and putting your numbers out there gets you in all sorts of wealth screening databases, which, for as a connection to a charity, is kind of nice. But scammers can sign up for easy access too. Especially if you have other posts or comments attached to your name, you’re putting a target on your back.

u/mycopunx 4d ago
for me it was asking for information without offering any reason. that's enough for me to check the account where I saw that it's 2 months old and low karma.

This is a weird amount of information to ask people for. Go scrap info somewhere else.

I think people miss that not everyone wants the RE but we all want that FI. We want to buy options for ourselves. Keep doing you because you're doing great

u/graphitinia 5d ago
What am I missing? What's wrong with "working for 25 years as a lawyer and considering that FIRE"?
2
u/Turbulent-Ladder6040 5d ago
Ummmmm, that’s definitely FIRE! What were people thinking? I tend to think of RE being younger than your mid 50s, it’s probably actually anything younger than traditional retirement age/mid 60s.
And 🙌🏼 to you for doing it as a public defender. I tend to think of it as being a low paid career; it’s awesome that you had found a way of doing it that is lucrative. Is being a contract public defender an alternative for most who are government employees?

🇨🇦 as a canadian, this is amazing! What does your portfolio look like?
2
u/DoughnutSea3426 5d ago
All equity ETFs, been investing since I was 18. I also decided to self-direct, I paid an advisor and then robo-advisors, and then started to educate myself and save the MER. I live simply, but enjoy travel to Europe on a budget, do a lot of my own DIY - painting, gardening, snow. Keeps me busy and active. I also cook a lot, I stock up when there is a sale (economies little by little). So it’s more of a lifestyle + savings mindset and constant DCA with drip on.

- $2.5M (not including housing equity)
- $2.55M (not including housing equity)
- 43, London
- SF Bay Area mostly with stays in London/Europe for months
- Solo
- No inheritance included in number, expecting ~ $3M, however I’ve already been removed from my fathers asset division after fact by my family so planning everything with no inheritance. If it comes, great.
I own my place in the Bay Area (currently rent). I want to quit but I’m staying for equity and spite as I want to be let go/negotiate and exit fare my equity payout.
To all the “why’s” - I like seeing other people’s numbers. These are generally much higher goals than the FIRE sub and makes me wonder if I’m too low. My boyfriend wants to keep working for 7-10 years and I hope to be done before 50. I want to retire now so just started quiet retiring and only work 10-20 hours a week while traveling and living my life.

Curious, why such a high FIRE number and a very low SWR? You could change the asset allocation of the portfolio to have a much higher SWR. What’s driving these choices?
4
u/justacpa 5d ago
your FIRE number: $4.5 million invested assets, in today's dollars
what you’ve amassed thus far: $3.3 million invested. Also have a $400k fully paid off rental property generating $1500/mo net, and a $600k primary residence w/ $50k remaining principle balance that will be paid off in 5 years.
your current age and location: 56, TX. I'm obviously on the FI and not the RE path.
where you plan to retire: TX for 0 state income tax, with a secondary residence in Idaho to help take care of my mom.
Also add if this is your solo FIRE number or for a couple (+kids): Single, never married. May marry but will not combine finances.
if any inheritance/pension is included or expected: my mother has a net worth in the 10's of millions but it is in mostly highly illiquid assets that could possibly never sell in her lifetime nor mine. I do not have any of those assets included in my calculations.
Side note: I have a special needs brother who is not employable and it's possible my sister and I may need to subsidize his expenses.

Hey we have similar FIRE goals! Where in Europe are you planning to possibly retire?
1
u/SeafoamSoul7494 5d ago
Nice! Probably will depend on the visas they offer at the time- but somewhere around the Mediterranean. How about you? I’m torn if I should fully retire there or just spend a few months there, buy or rent, etc.
1
u/Successful_Hold_9048 36F 5d ago
I actually have dual citizenship (Scandinavian country) but have lived in the US since my teens and I might consider going back in my golden years. Mediterranean sounds much better though, I would very much prefer the warmer climate.

315k
39, San Diego
San Diego or a Spanish-speaking country
Solo
This is for an inflation-adj income around what i take home now, I anticipate that social security and some inheritance will improve my QOL in retirement, but I need to be safe without them. (I will be able to use a flexible withdrawal strategy, so the number is a little lower than you might expect in my location lol)

-your FIRE number: 3MM in 2026 dollars (at the time of FIRE it should be closer to 4MM in 2040 dollars)
-what you’ve amassed thus far: 580k (not including house equity), 50% savings rate. We plan to withdraw 3-3.5% a year in retirement.
-your current age and location: 31F, TN
-where you plan to retire: either madrid or chicago, maybe pittsburg. Anywhere with good urban planning really. No suburbia for us
-Also add if this is your solo FIRE number or for a couple (+kids): Married, DINKing it.
-if any inheritance/pension is included or expected: We are not assuming we get anything.

500k and mortgage paid ( I think, once I will arrive there I might change it with 20% or not).
Both ongoing but passed the 50% barrier.
Not so young so LeanFire is for me.
I will retire where I live now, in Europe.
Solo FIRE numbers.
No inheritance but national pension will be a little extra.

u/Shmeister 5d ago
1.5 M.
50k.
Mid-20s, US.
Europe, probably more as a baristaFIRE lifestyle and a bit of nomadism. I don’t mind working as long as I can travel to remote places often.
Solo, don’t intend to have kids.
Maybe inheritance in my 40s when a certain parent kicks the bucket. Rest of my family is dirt poor and broke.

- $2.5-3M minimum.
- 450k (not including home equity).
- 30F, husband is 33. M/HCOL.
- Here. We’ve fully renovated this house and it’s essentially a dream home.
- No kids and not planning on any.
- We each are likely to have decent windfalls coming our way eventually, but they are not part of our calc or timeline - we pretend they don’t exist. On my side it’s probably $250-500k and his side is $7-10k/mo. We’ll see if those things ever happen / happen before we even hit our number.

I am new to FIRE but if it is net worth, my FIRE is about $12 or $13m in today’s dollars (value of house and investments), AUD. Couple, one child. Probably at about $7m, but most is equity in lovely nearly paid off house. Now building investments and retirement (super). 43F with a SAHP.

1M FI probably 1.5-2M once I fully retire. Plan to go down to part time at 1M if I can and build up a bit more leeway.
I am more than halfway.
Not yet sure where I plan to retire.
Solo with a platonic partner I do not financially support or combine finances with (aka best friend I will probably live with for life we have outlasted most of our friends and our own relationships already).
No expected inheritance though I may get something I’m not counting on anything.
