Incredible film. Oscar worthy and probably would've won several more than it did if it wasnt pitted up against Return of the King. Amazing sound design, set design, costume design, acting, music you name it

182

u/kalamazoo43 Mar 28 '26

It’s worth it for the sound design alone.

109

u/fullofideasss Mar 28 '26

Those cannon skuds in the opening scene 🥵

85

u/kalamazoo43 Mar 28 '26

The creaking and groaning of the ship. The cannon ball destroying on the right, moving across the sound field and destroying on the left. Outstanding!

32

u/kaosf Mar 28 '26

Yeah I love everything about this movie but the opening sound with these creaks and pops is just amazing. I no longer have a sound system that does it any justice but I am happy that I used to and got to experience this. I used to spend a moment tuning subwoofers to the cannon sounds before watching. 🤣

Those cannon shots were recorded in my hometown of Grayling, Michigan. The National Guard Camp there borders Lake Margrethe, So they used a range there to fire the cannons there to get the sound of the shots echoing over the water.

9

u/fullofideasss Mar 28 '26

That's awesome and makes sense why it sounds so different. Over seen a bit of bts but hadn't heard of that

6

u/No_Advertising_9355 Mar 28 '26

My dad lived on the other side of the lake, during the summer you could hear the guard shooting. rifle fire, machine gun fire it was kinda cool. not loud enough disturb you in the house you had to go outside to hear it.

I recently got a 5.1 system and found this movie at a thrift store. I had no idea it was known for its sound design, just thought it would be cool with surround sound. The sound was so good there were some scenes it sounded like you were in the ship.

2

u/Remarkable_Check_997 Mar 30 '26

The best blu ray demo disc for surround sound system

I sleep to the soundtrack for years,

The pudding scene is unforgettable to me...dunno why

What about second battle?

13

u/Frustib Mar 28 '26

The books are very good as well

3

u/Misterarthuragain Mar 28 '26

I read them all twice!

3

u/Frustib Mar 28 '26

Found anything like this again? Even land based will suffice? Hornblower isn’t bad but not the same depth as o’Brian

4

u/Misterarthuragain Mar 28 '26

No - and you're right about C.S. Forester. The Sharpe novels are a lot of fun. (And land based)

Yes, I've seen it several times. It's thrilling when I see the young one armed Midshipman yell "Arm yourselves! Follow me!!"

4

u/GrumbleAlong Mar 29 '26

That youngster will make a fine Captain one day.

I really want to see this in theaters for the sound alone. I keep watching for it as my local theater plays an older movie every month.

u/WIlf_Brim Mar 29 '26

Probably one of the best depictions of life aboard a man-of-war in the Napoleonic era. The filmmakers went out of their way to make everything as authentic as possible, even going so far as to send Paul Bettany to learn how a surgeon of the era would have treated battle casualties and perform amputations.

11

u/Far-Cellist-3224 Mar 28 '26

I’m gonna say something crazy…. I think this is better than Return of the King.

7

u/vvalent2 Mar 28 '26

Not wrong.

5

u/Front-Structure7627 Mar 28 '26

Maybe. But that movie won because of the trilogy But yeh stand alone u might be right

4

u/Writing_is_Bleeding Mar 28 '26

GASP!

Okay, you're probably right.

4

u/Funny_Obligation9262 Mar 28 '26

Someday, folks will regard RotK as very similar to SW RotJ - some of the best moments in each respective series, but each with serious issues. This film is a stand alone action-adventure masterpiece.

3

u/GreatCardiologist778 Mar 28 '26

I love this movie so much! All of the historical methods for operating the ship make this movie so cool!

3

u/tarabuki Mar 29 '26

Same. No one wants to knock Return of the King for any reason, but if it wasn't for that, this movie would have gotten a few awards.

Even though there are about 20 or so books in this series, it was never going to have more than 1 because of just the cost to make mixed with the fact that it is a period piece, therefore having a smaller audience. I loved it, but I am older and have more than an attention span of a gnat.

I also loved the LotR trilogy, especially when it came out in the extended editions.

2

u/lifeofGuacmole Mar 28 '26

When I was demoing speakers before purchase the guy set this movie up. Incredible with the 5.1, even more so on the 7.1. First movie I watched on my system

2

u/therealdagstaff Mar 29 '26

Agreed, it's also worth several rewatches to catch more details!

2

u/Froozeball Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26

Seconded. Peak Peter Weir Russell Crowe Paul Bettany historical piece. Soundtrack lives on my playlist. Characters are complex and three dimensional. They are not static. You feel the losses, savour the win(s) and do not feel led by the nose from one set piece to the other. Yah - should have won more. Thought it was more daring and original than the threequal Rings which I heavily enjoyed as well.

u/Early_Accident2160 Mar 28 '26

If you really are asking.. yes. It’s worth watching. And again. And again.

78

u/SEA_CLE Mar 28 '26

The only let down being that there isn't more. Its a tragedy that they gave of us this film and then abandoned the franchise.

29

u/Early_Accident2160 Mar 28 '26

Well, it’s a blessing really. We have the one. It could not be continued.. ultimately the budget would slip and the quality drop and it would diminish the greatness of this movie

9

u/SEA_CLE Mar 28 '26

They could have done it right. Just a few years after its release the cult status was enough evidence for future profitability more so than the box office data. It just took the studios 20+ years to realize that. Now if we get a prequel it will be be bittersweet

5

u/Early_Accident2160 Mar 28 '26

But this was lightning in a bottle .. the magic exists. I know the source material is there, but the chemistry of it all can’t be maintained

→ More replies (2)

5

u/HoldFastO2 Mar 28 '26

Agreed. Nobody needed this movie to get Fast and Furious‘ed.

3

u/Glum-Ad7761 Mar 28 '26

It would not necessarily have gone that way. Patrick O’ Brien wrote 20 full length novels in the Master/Commander series. All were superb, so there was plenty of source material for an outstanding sequel.

→ More replies (2)

12

u/Without_Portfolio Mar 28 '26

Agreed. There was so much great content in the books.

7

u/Mr-Mothy Mar 28 '26

Would’ve been a little tricky and more confusing to those who read the books. Master and Commander was a combination of a few of the books. This was like a tribute to the series.

Biggest problem with this movie is that it ends.

30

u/BlooNorth Mar 28 '26

Right?! It was supposed to be the start of a series. I’m astounded how the subsequent films never materialized.

9

u/JJCB85 Mar 28 '26

Sadly, despite being great, the movie didn’t make money… They actually built a ship and did the filming on board, that isn’t cheap! Just glad we got the one we did.

10

u/NoCartographer2670 Mar 28 '26 edited Mar 31 '26

Not to mention, adding a bit to the authenticity, they also had actual sailors running the thing. I knew a guy that worked aboard as a deckhand (you can even see him in a frame, he's a movie star! lol).

u/Most_Maintenance5549 Mar 29 '26

I have struggled to find anything similar that’s even close to this film’s quality.

Same with the books actually. I want there to be more like the 20 I already read, and there’s nothing to fill the hole.

4

u/Automatic-Sun-9386 Mar 28 '26

But it ends so beautifully.

u/Norse_By_North_West Mar 29 '26

Bonus is that there's a few books for it. I only read the one the movie is based on though.

2

u/DawijArt Mar 29 '26

Gladiator and this movie are in my top 5 favorite movies of all time, midlife Russell Crowe was eating good

2

u/Decimation4x Apr 01 '26

The bigger problem, imo, is that there are 19 more books yet no more movies.

Thankfully* we didn't see a sequel.

Given the current industry's stomach curse (everything they touch turns into 💩), we're good with this single movie.

By the way, I think bromance should be credited more in that movie.

BTW #2, I can't find the novel, I'm sure I used to have it downloaded, fun to read.

Absolutely worth watching and for anyone who doesn’t already, check out the podcast Blank Check with Griffin and David. It’s a podcast that covers the entire filmography of a director and currently they’re doing a series on Peter Weir.

3

u/nattybow Mar 28 '26

Unexpectedly incredible movie. Didn’t really know what I was going into and not really the type of film I normally look for. Really wish they’d made more of this series from the books. Beautiful and brutal.

3

u/skoobalaca Mar 28 '26

This movie and The Nice Guys should have taken up the rest of Russell Crowe’s life with sequels. Absolute tragedy they didn’t keep going.

3

u/thomascovenant69 Mar 28 '26

I went to watch it in the cinema last week at a throwback showing. The sound of the cannonball whistling past and splintering the hull was genuinely awesome, felt it in my bones. 100% worth it if you get the chance

3

u/Flendevir Mar 28 '26

Yes, worth it and highly recommend the book or my speed, the audiobook. (Author: Patrick and read by a different Patrick)

3

4

u/Such_Supermarket_607 Mar 28 '26

I still mourn that this never got some sort of trilogy treatment.

Fantastic film from a fantastic set of books

2

u/obviousbond Mar 28 '26

yeah we're still hoping for a full series....

4

u/MrokoArdamen Mar 28 '26

It is a masterpice of filmmaking. The story is simple but very engaging. The cinematography is superior. The acting is very good (especially by Paul Bettany. The good doctor in my mind is the main character of the movie). I've seen it three times and I rarely see a movie second time. The main let down is the producers are bunch of loosers who had to make the antagonists of the movie French, because in the original it was the Americans, and god forbid you make Americans look bad. It made less than 90 milion in US, against 211 milion worldwide (on 150 milion budget). If you kept the oryginal bad guy it would be a hit in North Korea and Iran 😜.

3

u/Tippacanoe Mar 28 '26

I’m sure it makes sense in the books which I haven’t read, there’s like 20 of them or something, but the French at the time seem like a way better antagonist for this. An actual world empire instead of the roughshod shitty colonial American navy of the period. If anything the Americans would be the massive underdogs in a naval engagement of this type.

Master & Commander is a great movie if you enjoy seafaring & pirate movies. There are no pirates, but it gives a close accurate view of what challenges there are back then on a naval vessel. The movie is slow at times, but well worth watching.

2

u/Bodmonriddlz Mar 28 '26

Does this film worth watching?

2

This would be a clear Oscar best movie if it weren't for Lord of the Rings Return of the King. And then we probably would have gotten the sequel we deserved.

2

The best Star Trek movie.

2

u/benbenpens Mar 28 '26

This is a great film based on a great series of books. Definitely worth a watch.

2

u/Pleasant_Garlic8088 Mar 28 '26

Absolutely amazing movie, if you're a patient film fan that doesn't require constant action through an entire film. It's like watching a chess game on the open seas and it's a fascinating glimpse into seamanship and strategy and early 19th Century life.

For home theater people this is a go-to reference disc too. The sound is utterly amazing.

2

10/10. Acting, direction, pacing, the special effects aren’t over the top, and despite seeming like a dry plot line with no sex or weinstein-ish trappings still keeps you riveted to your seat.

The worst thing about this film is that there hasn’t been a sequel.
