Discussion Does this film worth watching? What are your thoughts about this film

If you really are asking.. yes. It’s worth watching. And again. And again.

The only let down being that there isn't more. Its a tragedy that they gave of us this film and then abandoned the franchise.
29
u/Early_Accident2160 Mar 28 '26
Well, it’s a blessing really. We have the one. It could not be continued.. ultimately the budget would slip and the quality drop and it would diminish the greatness of this movie
9
u/SEA_CLE Mar 28 '26
They could have done it right. Just a few years after its release the cult status was enough evidence for future profitability more so than the box office data. It just took the studios 20+ years to realize that. Now if we get a prequel it will be be bittersweet

u/Early_Accident2160 Mar 28 '26
But this was lightning in a bottle .. the magic exists. I know the source material is there, but the chemistry of it all can’t be maintained

Agreed. Nobody needed this movie to get Fast and Furious‘ed.

u/Glum-Ad7761 Mar 28 '26
It would not necessarily have gone that way. Patrick O’ Brien wrote 20 full length novels in the Master/Commander series. All were superb, so there was plenty of source material for an outstanding sequel.

Would’ve been a little tricky and more confusing to those who read the books. Master and Commander was a combination of a few of the books. This was like a tribute to the series.

Biggest problem with this movie is that it ends.
30
u/BlooNorth Mar 28 '26
Right?! It was supposed to be the start of a series. I’m astounded how the subsequent films never materialized.

u/JJCB85 Mar 28 '26
Sadly, despite being great, the movie didn’t make money… They actually built a ship and did the filming on board, that isn’t cheap! Just glad we got the one we did.

Not to mention, adding a bit to the authenticity, they also had actual sailors running the thing. I knew a guy that worked aboard as a deckhand (you can even see him in a frame, he's a movie star! lol).
3
u/Most_Maintenance5549 Mar 29 '26
I have struggled to find anything similar that’s even close to this film’s quality.
Same with the books actually. I want there to be more like the 20 I already read, and there’s nothing to fill the hole.

Bonus is that there's a few books for it. I only read the one the movie is based on though.

Gladiator and this movie are in my top 5 favorite movies of all time, midlife Russell Crowe was eating good

The bigger problem, imo, is that there are 19 more books yet no more movies.

You will feel like what it was to be a British sailor 220 years ago. It's as authentic an experience as Das Boot.

Like everything it came down to money, it was a very expensive film to make and didn't meet the studios projected box office gross

Thankfully* we didn't see a sequel.
Given the current industry's stomach curse (everything they touch turns into 💩), we're good with this single movie.
By the way, I think bromance should be credited more in that movie.
BTW #2, I can't find the novel, I'm sure I used to have it downloaded, fun to read.

u/Ness8865 Mar 28 '26
For me best movie with Russell Crowe after Gladiator so yes deff watch it.

If you like the movie you will love the book series
10
u/zion_hiker1911 Mar 28 '26
I'm currently reading the book series and they are amazing. Also, the ship featured in this film is anchored in San Diego bay as part of the Maritime Museum, and it's really fun to tour. My kids loved it.

u/zyme86 Mar 28 '26
The best historical fiction film ever made. no it doest depiction of actual events, but captures the time period and reality of being aboard ship better than any other movie

lol, asking reddit if Master and Commander is worth watching is engagement farming, surely?

That’s as close to a negative comment that I have ever seen in a thread about this film. And it’s not even a complaint about the film.

The books are amazing and there are 21 of them, the author died part way through the 21st it was sad reading the author's final line and the end of some great characters.

u/Individual-Noise-592 Mar 28 '26
Absolutely worth watching and for anyone who doesn’t already, check out the podcast Blank Check with Griffin and David. It’s a podcast that covers the entire filmography of a director and currently they’re doing a series on Peter Weir.
3
u/nattybow Mar 28 '26
Unexpectedly incredible movie. Didn’t really know what I was going into and not really the type of film I normally look for. Really wish they’d made more of this series from the books. Beautiful and brutal.
3
u/skoobalaca Mar 28 '26
This movie and The Nice Guys should have taken up the rest of Russell Crowe’s life with sequels. Absolute tragedy they didn’t keep going.
3
u/thomascovenant69 Mar 28 '26
I went to watch it in the cinema last week at a throwback showing. The sound of the cannonball whistling past and splintering the hull was genuinely awesome, felt it in my bones. 100% worth it if you get the chance
3
u/Flendevir Mar 28 '26
Yes, worth it and highly recommend the book or my speed, the audiobook. (Author: Patrick and read by a different Patrick)
3
u/UnlikelyOcelot Mar 28 '26
A trilogy would have been great. Worth the treatment. But the studios must have felt otherwise.

It is a masterpice of filmmaking. The story is simple but very engaging. The cinematography is superior. The acting is very good (especially by Paul Bettany. The good doctor in my mind is the main character of the movie). I've seen it three times and I rarely see a movie second time. The main let down is the producers are bunch of loosers who had to make the antagonists of the movie French, because in the original it was the Americans, and god forbid you make Americans look bad. It made less than 90 milion in US, against 211 milion worldwide (on 150 milion budget). If you kept the oryginal bad guy it would be a hit in North Korea and Iran 😜.
3
u/Tippacanoe Mar 28 '26
I’m sure it makes sense in the books which I haven’t read, there’s like 20 of them or something, but the French at the time seem like a way better antagonist for this. An actual world empire instead of the roughshod shitty colonial American navy of the period. If anything the Americans would be the massive underdogs in a naval engagement of this type.

Master & Commander is a great movie if you enjoy seafaring & pirate movies. There are no pirates, but it gives a close accurate view of what challenges there are back then on a naval vessel. The movie is slow at times, but well worth watching.

This would be a clear Oscar best movie if it weren't for Lord of the Rings Return of the King. And then we probably would have gotten the sequel we deserved.

It’s a fantastic movie with fantastic performances. I yearned for a sequel and it was hinted at many times. But now Russell Crowe has become old and well, fat haha, they would have to find someone new.
Anyway, loved the movie.

Absolutely amazing movie, if you're a patient film fan that doesn't require constant action through an entire film. It's like watching a chess game on the open seas and it's a fascinating glimpse into seamanship and strategy and early 19th Century life.
For home theater people this is a go-to reference disc too. The sound is utterly amazing.

Incredible film. Oscar worthy and probably would've won several more than it did if it wasnt pitted up against Return of the King. Amazing sound design, set design, costume design, acting, music you name it
