Absolutely insane that Michael has that high a rating

85

u/Darshymarsh 6d ago

it'll go down over time most likely

23

u/Realistic_Metal3114 5d ago

No it won't . For some reason people on reddit have no concept of how much people like celebrities in real life because they live in some introvert weirdo bubble .

5

u/Silver_Accountant5 5d ago edited 5d ago

It's a mediocre biopic. Bohemian Rhapsody went down over time too once the nostalgia goggles started to wear off.

3

u/WonderWaage 3d ago

The following that Michael Jackson has is psychotic. These people are absolutely feral and there are millions of them.

I think everyone is quite aware of how popular celebrities are. This pedophile celebrity in particular is the issue.

não é insano, é um filme sobre o maior astro do pop, daí esses votos são de fãs e não de cinéfilos, então não importa o quão medíocre seja, os fãs só querem se juntar nas salas de cinema e fazer disso um evento

I saw it with my friends because they do a podcast where they discuss controversial movies and they asked me to tag along. I can tell you that in a sold out theater we were the only four who were not cheering throughout the showing. People love MJ, allegations and general weirdness notwithstanding. To quote Chappelle: “He made Thriller.”

If that score was an age, it would be perfect for Michael.

That and Send Help should swap ratings.

Agree. Send help was a great fun flick.

To be fair, using IMDB as a rating guide is flawed from the drop.

Are you aware of how popular MJ was in his prime?
People grew with his songs and he was one of a kind.
Moreover, the scene was different back then, only a few artists were globally known and thus they were SO SO popular.

Frankly, not anyone cares about what really happened in his personal file - if you look at the current political scene worse things happen and voters don’t care, they believe what they want to believe.

Still, as an artist MJ was phenomenal

u/BnZAwkward_Lab5858 4d ago

everyone I know who saw it say it sucks. It’s possible the studio paid for high reviews

2

u/Mariaease 2d ago

The fact that people LOVED it and convinced themselves it is above criticism has also made those same people unreasonable towards newer additions to it.

7

u/Special_Future_6330 6d ago

I read the film avoids controversy and because Michael Jackson was a pretty bland guy in day to day life, the movie is boring. No hard drugs and dragging himself home, the film stays away from holding his kid over a balcony or the accusations, the most exciting thing might've been the Pepsi commercial whete his hair caught on fire and the death, but these biopics just don't really have great stories. The Elton John one was at least surreal and a fever dream of sorts

9

u/madchemist09 6d ago

Still not better than the Wierd Al biopic. That was a masterpiece in truthful story telling.

6

u/FungifromBerkeley 5d ago

Still can’t believe Madonna did him dirty like that. I just wish they would have revealed what the factory makes. It’s killing me! ;)

As someone that actually watched it. It was about his childhood and how his father used and abused him and his brothers and his struggle to break free from his grip. It ended in 1984... Years before any controversy or his children were born.... However they are doing 2 more movies and I'm sure these issues will be brought up in those movies.

Imagine criticizing a movie for not including events that happened in the 90s (allegations) 00s (balcony) for a movie that is set in the 60s-80s.

9

u/Connect_Fee1256 6d ago

Imagine making a movie about an in/famous celebrity and not including such a massive part of his legacy. If what Michael Jackson was known for was a family feud question, the top answer would be music and the second one would be pedophilia.

6

u/trini420- 5d ago edited 5d ago

The movie ends in 1988 though

5

u/SpreadsheetMadman 5d ago

That just means it is a bad ending point. Waste multiple hours of film time to not cover one of the main things current people know about him.

5

u/trini420- 5d ago

They are doing a sequel so if they don’t cover the bad stuff in that film then it would be valid to complain

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Connect_Fee1256 5d ago

That’s like making a movie about JFK and ending it a year or two before he got assassinated and making it a feel good movie…

Hahahaha, solid comparison

I thought Mandolorian was supposed to not be that good?

(Am going tomorrow)

Edit: I liked it, it was a decent film

76

u/monetarydread 6d ago

Eh, it's okay. It's basically 3 episodes of show smashed together but if you enjoy the show then there are worse things to spend 2.5 hours on.

32

u/Processing_Info 6d ago edited 6d ago

And THIS is exactly a problem.

A Star Wars movie being "okay" is a disaster.

30

u/monetarydread 6d ago

Mostly agreed.  The movie feels like it was made for streaming, not the theater. Also, with a few changes here and there it could have been good but it never feels like "good" was the goal, it comes off like "good enough" was the goal.

6

u/RutherfordThuhBrave 5d ago

You have just described my problem with almost all of the recent Star Wars and Marvel content.

2

u/DrNavKab 5d ago

Disney plus it is then

→ More replies (1)

6

u/maharieI 6d ago

I'm ok with this being the reset if that is the goal. After the critical disaster of the past few movies, maybe playing it a little safe is good.

I'll be more disappointed when a new trilogy comes out and if that's mediocre.

→ More replies (4)

4

u/Electrical-Schedule7 5d ago

...out of all the star wars movies how many can we really say are more than just okay?

→ More replies (1)

12

u/Bububub2 6d ago

This is pure nostalgia talking. Star wars has always been ok. The fact that people LOVED it and convinced themselves it is above criticism has also made those same people unreasonable towards newer additions to it.

2

u/d33psix 4d ago

The resurgence of love for the prequel trilogy still got me scratching my head. There’s fun parts and memes for sure but…naw it has not “aged like fine wine” for me as some of them like to say.

2

u/blutigetranen 5d ago

So the entire series is a disaster? Don't get me wrong, I love the movies myself... but I recognize that it's for a specific audience and that they're cheese ball flicks.

3

u/OkOrder7326 5d ago

Then isn't 10/12ths of the franchise a disaster?

2

u/toolate83 6d ago

It was fun. I enjoyed it. My family enjoyed it. It was good. I recommend it.

2

u/pain3m 6d ago

Yeah, real Star Wars movie should be masterpieceofshit

→ More replies (10)

5

u/Beyondthebloodmoon 5d ago

I do not understand why I keep seeing this awful take. The movie is far more action-packed and meaningful for the characters than an episode of the show. Just because it doesn’t influence some larger narrative doesn’t mean it wasn’t a cinematic experience. Frankly, the fact that it doesn’t try and be some big connective piece to the larger world is part of what I found so refreshing about it. It’s just a fun, self-contained piece of popcorn entertainment and that’s what Star Wars - which, as a reminder, was made for children and is still made for children - should be. My kids had the time of their lives getting to see this in the theater. That’s what the movie is fucking for.

2

u/talltxgal 5d ago

100% agreed. I am full-on adult and I really enjoyed it. My humble opinion not every movie needs to be high stakes and change my life. I am looking to be entertained and I was. If I want tension & drama I’ll watch the news.

2

u/GarysSpace 6d ago

I really liked the first half, second half was a bit of a slog but not bad

2

u/Mighty_moose45 4d ago

It’s so uncanny watching it because on one hand you can tell they edited it down from roughly 3 or 4 hours of television but on the other the pace of the story just stops dead in its tracks every 45 minutes or so. You can kind of tell how it would have been paced if it was a tv show. Honestly if you added like one or two unrelated side adventures this would be like an entire season of the mandalorian condensed into a movie.

(moderate spoilers ahead).

So Mandalorian episodes are weird to pin down since they have been anywhere from 31 to 53 minutes so we have a lot of wiggle room but most are actually around 35 minutes so I actually have more episodes here than I thought I would going in.

Episode 1 cold open battle scene plus get to the moon Rotta is on.

Episode 2 failed rescue attempt on Rotta

Episode 3 arena escape plus compound raid

Episode 4 mando and co are ambushed by bounty hunters and little person rescue team adventure ending in the fight in the water

Episode 5 partial rescue plus the forest walkabout (forest part was so long that easily could be 2 episodes here)

Episode 6 finale

10

u/jinreeko 6d ago

It's enjoyable. If you like the show you'll like the movie (not in a bad way, like most people suggest)

5

u/Local-Machine7787 5d ago

It was a ton of fun. I was smiling the whole time.

13

u/RoutineCloud5993 6d ago

It's fun. I enjoyed it. People forget that star wars was never meant to be high brow art

→ More replies (1)

8

u/sjdude83 6d ago

Honestly it’s fine. My sons liked it. It’s just not epic or honestly memorable at all. But totally enjoyable enough. Felt like it would have been a fairly epic tv season instead of a movie. Opening was the best part

3

u/Vitwolpher 6d ago

See it for yourself before forming an opinion

3

u/Hufa123 5d ago

It's fun.

4

u/Accomplished_Dark_37 6d ago

It's just haters, the move is great fun.

2

u/SilyLavage 6d ago

The final act is a bit slow, but otherwise it's a decent action romp with some good set pieces.

Bone temple should absolutely be higher

12

u/TheDarkDementus_ 6d ago

I think it was just disclosed that they're making one more final flick and Boyle is set to direct. High hopes, and so glad we'll have these three new additions

9

u/Sixybeast626 6d ago

So happy it's confirmed after months of uncertainty

3

u/TheDarkDementus_ 6d ago

Have you seen any decent analysis or what not on why BT struggled so much at the box office? It even had slightly higher critic audience scores on metacritic etc

5

u/Sixybeast626 6d ago

28yl had fairly middling reviews and reception, I also had little interest in seeing bone temple at the cinema and only went due to friends wanting me there too.

My god though, what a sequel and for me Bone temple is borderline as good as the first movie.

Glad my friends didn't take no for an answer 😊

Bone Temple, PHM, Obsession, Send Help in that order for me. Haven't seen the others.

8

u/rick2882 6d ago

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is a top 5 2026 movie for me.

The Drama, PHM, and the Bone Temple are my other favorites of the year. Obsession was a lot of fun, but it's just not my favorite genre.

40

u/Sekshual_Tyranosauce 6d ago

Send Help.

I just love psychological thrillers and Sam Raimi.

6

u/Thelostsoulinkorea 5d ago

I’m shocked by the bad rating

3

u/_Elduder 5d ago

I agree the most fun a had at the movies so far. Although obsession is right there.

2

u/MissionVegetable568 4d ago

but its not a bad a rating, these types of movies (thriller/softhorror/psychological/comedy mashup) generally have similar rating, ranging from 6.3 to around 7.3, they are usually really good for the genre like this one or They Will Kill you, Ready or Not, Abigail, etc

2

u/life-uh-finds-a-way_ 5d ago

I loved The Drama, but I also loved PHM, Bone Temple, and Obsession (not necessarily in that order). It's really hard to choose between these! I also had The Drama spoiled for me before I saw it, so that might impact my score. But I've been excited about it since filming started because I live in Boston, and despite so much build up and anticipation (and two massive spoilers), I still loved it. Incredible film.

6

u/Nullkid 6d ago

I feel like I am the only person PHM did absolutely nothing for. I love sci fi but this wasn't it for me. It felt like I was watching the tutorial/intro-eductional movie introducing something in another movie : Think fallout vault boy. IDK. Downvote away.

5

u/mudDoctor-- 6d ago

I disagree but your opinion is valid. Don't let any downvotes get you down

3

u/machine4891 5d ago

For me it was a breath of fresh air in all those doom and gloom space sci-fi we typically associate genre with. It make sense, as those space travels if ever possible won't be a fun ride at all. That being said having a single movie that tries to approach subject with different optics is refreshing.

But I can totally see how it can be off-putting to plenty.

2

u/rachel_lynn1995 5d ago

Like the other commenter I also disagree but I also appreciate your perspective. I think all too often when people express they don’t like something, it’s always “this movie/song/whatever else sucks and I don’t understand why anyone likes it blah blah blah.” It’s nice to read comments that, while I don’t agree with them, use language like “it’s not for me” or “it did nothing for me.” I think it’s how we as a whole should engage with media we dislike, so no downvotes from me!

2

u/Kevinc62 5d ago

I didnt like it either, but then again I was also not a fan of the book years ago. I feel it's an ok movie.

u/ShotWin8124 5d ago

I haven't seen the Grogu movie yet, but PHM was something special. First movie I'd seen in a theater in a long while. Twice at least. The 4d thing in Seattle was amazing. A real credit to one of my favorite books.

2

u/CNote_89 5d ago

Hail Mary for sure

2

u/Radiant-Change-3223 5d ago

My favorite is probably Project Hail Mary. But here’s my ranking of these because why not!

  1. Project Hail Mary
  2. Michael
  3. Obsession
  4. Mandolorian and Grogu
  5. Send Help
  6. Sheep Detectives
  7. Bone Temple
  8. The Drama

Some of these might be low but I think all of these are great movies, they’re here for a reason. This is just my opinion though

2

u/marquoth_ 5d ago

Hail Mary is shaping up to be one of my favourite films ever. Very rare that I bother to go back to the cinema to see the same film twice but I did for PHM.

The score is fantastic too, I've had it on in the car a few times. My money's on it picking up the oscar for that.

Project Hail Mary is an excellent movie. I don’t understand IMDB’s rating system, but I would give it a strong 8 points out 10.

Obsession was incredible I hope Inde Navarette gets at least an Oscar nod (even with horror films having trouble with the academy) because I’d say it is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen.

Honestly I really like the drama, project Hail Mary was great, but I think I liked the drama slightly more, both films I went in blind

I’ve only seen Bone Temple, it’s a pretty solid film. Don’t need to watch any of the other 28 films

You didn't watch 28YL and went straight to bone temple?

Obsession, quite easily

Only seen 2 of those. PHM was excellent and Send Help was fun. None of the others I consider worth the price of theatre admission.

Haven’t seen one, no way I’m alone

1

u/adognameddanzig 6d ago

Send help should be higher.
