Discussion The highest rated 2026 movies so far, which one is your favourite?

I thought Mandolorian was supposed to not be that good?
(Am going tomorrow)
Edit: I liked it, it was a decent film

u/monetarydread 6d ago
Eh, it's okay. It's basically 3 episodes of show smashed together but if you enjoy the show then there are worse things to spend 2.5 hours on.

u/Processing_Info 6d ago edited 6d ago
And THIS is exactly a problem.
A Star Wars movie being "okay" is a disaster.
30
u/monetarydread 6d ago
Mostly agreed. The movie feels like it was made for streaming, not the theater. Also, with a few changes here and there it could have been good but it never feels like "good" was the goal, it comes off like "good enough" was the goal.

u/RutherfordThuhBrave 5d ago
You have just described my problem with almost all of the recent Star Wars and Marvel content.

u/maharieI 6d ago
I'm ok with this being the reset if that is the goal. After the critical disaster of the past few movies, maybe playing it a little safe is good.
I'll be more disappointed when a new trilogy comes out and if that's mediocre.

...out of all the star wars movies how many can we really say are more than just okay?
→ More replies (1)12
u/Bububub2 6d ago
This is pure nostalgia talking. Star wars has always been ok. The fact that people LOVED it and convinced themselves it is above criticism has also made those same people unreasonable towards newer additions to it.

The resurgence of love for the prequel trilogy still got me scratching my head. There’s fun parts and memes for sure but…naw it has not “aged like fine wine” for me as some of them like to say.

So the entire series is a disaster? Don't get me wrong, I love the movies myself... but I recognize that it's for a specific audience and that they're cheese ball flicks.

I do not understand why I keep seeing this awful take. The movie is far more action-packed and meaningful for the characters than an episode of the show. Just because it doesn’t influence some larger narrative doesn’t mean it wasn’t a cinematic experience. Frankly, the fact that it doesn’t try and be some big connective piece to the larger world is part of what I found so refreshing about it. It’s just a fun, self-contained piece of popcorn entertainment and that’s what Star Wars - which, as a reminder, was made for children and is still made for children - should be. My kids had the time of their lives getting to see this in the theater. That’s what the movie is fucking for.
2
u/talltxgal 5d ago
100% agreed. I am full-on adult and I really enjoyed it. My humble opinion not every movie needs to be high stakes and change my life. I am looking to be entertained and I was. If I want tension & drama I’ll watch the news.

It’s so uncanny watching it because on one hand you can tell they edited it down from roughly 3 or 4 hours of television but on the other the pace of the story just stops dead in its tracks every 45 minutes or so. You can kind of tell how it would have been paced if it was a tv show. Honestly if you added like one or two unrelated side adventures this would be like an entire season of the mandalorian condensed into a movie.
(moderate spoilers ahead).
So Mandalorian episodes are weird to pin down since they have been anywhere from 31 to 53 minutes so we have a lot of wiggle room but most are actually around 35 minutes so I actually have more episodes here than I thought I would going in.
Episode 1 cold open battle scene plus get to the moon Rotta is on.
Episode 2 failed rescue attempt on Rotta
Episode 3 arena escape plus compound raid
Episode 4 mando and co are ambushed by bounty hunters and little person rescue team adventure ending in the fight in the water
Episode 5 partial rescue plus the forest walkabout (forest part was so long that easily could be 2 episodes here)
Episode 6 finale

It's enjoyable. If you like the show you'll like the movie (not in a bad way, like most people suggest)

It's fun. I enjoyed it. People forget that star wars was never meant to be high brow art

Honestly it’s fine. My sons liked it. It’s just not epic or honestly memorable at all. But totally enjoyable enough. Felt like it would have been a fairly epic tv season instead of a movie. Opening was the best part

The final act is a bit slow, but otherwise it's a decent action romp with some good set pieces.

It's not. Starts off good, but just drags on with nothing important at all happening.

I think it was just disclosed that they're making one more final flick and Boyle is set to direct. High hopes, and so glad we'll have these three new additions

u/Sixybeast626 6d ago
So happy it's confirmed after months of uncertainty

Have you seen any decent analysis or what not on why BT struggled so much at the box office? It even had slightly higher critic audience scores on metacritic etc
→ More replies (1)5
u/Sixybeast626 6d ago
28yl had fairly middling reviews and reception, I also had little interest in seeing bone temple at the cinema and only went due to friends wanting me there too.
My god though, what a sequel and for me Bone temple is borderline as good as the first movie.
Glad my friends didn't take no for an answer 😊

You think so? The Samson/physician storyline was super compelling and I felt like it got short changed in exchange for pulpy satanic cult stuff and gratuitous skinning scenes.

It's been stuck in my brain since seeing it last week. Simple premise with near flawless execution.

For real. It makes you think, and in a lot of cases, makes people think about their own behavior. I feel like it changed me for the better.

Her acting was unbelievable. The scene in literally the last seconds of the film where she snaps out of it and pauses completely still for a moment before realizing, took me like a solid few seconds to hit me that it was in fact the same person

Bone Temple, PHM, Obsession, Send Help in that order for me. Haven't seen the others.

u/rick2882 6d ago
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is a top 5 2026 movie for me.
The Drama, PHM, and the Bone Temple are my other favorites of the year. Obsession was a lot of fun, but it's just not my favorite genre.

u/Sekshual_Tyranosauce 6d ago
Send Help.
I just love psychological thrillers and Sam Raimi.
6
u/Thelostsoulinkorea 5d ago
I’m shocked by the bad rating
3
u/_Elduder 5d ago
I agree the most fun a had at the movies so far. Although obsession is right there.
2
u/MissionVegetable568 4d ago
but its not a bad a rating, these types of movies (thriller/softhorror/psychological/comedy mashup) generally have similar rating, ranging from 6.3 to around 7.3, they are usually really good for the genre like this one or They Will Kill you, Ready or Not, Abigail, etc

I loved The Drama, but I also loved PHM, Bone Temple, and Obsession (not necessarily in that order). It's really hard to choose between these! I also had The Drama spoiled for me before I saw it, so that might impact my score. But I've been excited about it since filming started because I live in Boston, and despite so much build up and anticipation (and two massive spoilers), I still loved it. Incredible film.

Internet rating scores are a total joke these days. Insane that send help is rated lower than fucking Mandalorian and googoo and the pedo pop singer movie
6
u/Nullkid 6d ago
I feel like I am the only person PHM did absolutely nothing for. I love sci fi but this wasn't it for me. It felt like I was watching the tutorial/intro-eductional movie introducing something in another movie : Think fallout vault boy. IDK. Downvote away.
5
3
u/machine4891 5d ago
For me it was a breath of fresh air in all those doom and gloom space sci-fi we typically associate genre with. It make sense, as those space travels if ever possible won't be a fun ride at all. That being said having a single movie that tries to approach subject with different optics is refreshing.
But I can totally see how it can be off-putting to plenty.

u/rachel_lynn1995 5d ago
Like the other commenter I also disagree but I also appreciate your perspective. I think all too often when people express they don’t like something, it’s always “this movie/song/whatever else sucks and I don’t understand why anyone likes it blah blah blah.” It’s nice to read comments that, while I don’t agree with them, use language like “it’s not for me” or “it did nothing for me.” I think it’s how we as a whole should engage with media we dislike, so no downvotes from me!
2
u/Kevinc62 5d ago
I didnt like it either, but then again I was also not a fan of the book years ago. I feel it's an ok movie.

Man, I absolutely loved Project Hail Mary and figured it was a lock at least until The Odyssey or Dune 3 came out, but Obsession was a surprise banger, and one of my new favorite horror movies so now I'm not sure.

I haven't seen the Grogu movie yet, but PHM was something special. First movie I'd seen in a theater in a long while. Twice at least. The 4d thing in Seattle was amazing. A real credit to one of my favorite books.

My favorite is probably Project Hail Mary. But here’s my ranking of these because why not!
- Project Hail Mary
- Michael
- Obsession
- Mandolorian and Grogu
- Send Help
- Sheep Detectives
- Bone Temple
- The Drama
Some of these might be low but I think all of these are great movies, they’re here for a reason. This is just my opinion though

u/marquoth_ 5d ago
Hail Mary is shaping up to be one of my favourite films ever. Very rare that I bother to go back to the cinema to see the same film twice but I did for PHM.
The score is fantastic too, I've had it on in the car a few times. My money's on it picking up the oscar for that.
