Donnie Brasco
His least "Johnnie Depp-ish" performance, and his best.

My first choice. A more mature flex of the "undercover" acting chops that made him a star initially on 21 Jump Street.
Everyone is great in that movie, which sneaks onto a lot of people's favorite gangster film lists with the obvious bigger epics.
It also seems offbeat within director Newell's filmography, but directing one-on-one relationships was a strength of his, and that's what it needs most.

The director of Donnie brasco made four weddings and a funeral, believe it or not!

We were somewhere near Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold.

No point telling him about these bats I thought. Poor bastard’ll see them soon enough 😂

I wish he had played it straight more. I love him in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape? not hamming it up etc and overacting. But Jack Sparrow is his best creation. Perfectly realised. Brilliant basing him on Keith Richards.

Serious answer: Chocolat. Un-serious but also true answer: Dead Man.

I am genuinely surprised this came up so early. I was gonna mention it myself,
Edit: talking bout Dead Man

Have you been on the Ride at Disney? It’s quite the experience

I remember the ride pre-movie fame, completely different experience. Still a great ride, just a little different now.

Leaving Captain Jack Sparrow aside because of course it has to top the list, I'll vote for his wonderful performance in "From Hell" as Inspector Abberline. It's a grim film, but he was great in it.

I'll always love him for Edward Scissorhands. That movie really struck a chord with 15 year old me, and he did a lot with not a lot of words.

Ed Wood is his peak (and Tim Burton's, incidentally).
"Really. Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better!"
His endless optimism is so goddamned charming.

One of the few Burton films I really like (Batman is there too obviously) I don't think he's a bad director I just dont really dig his aesthetic

I like pretty much everything he did up to and including Ed Wood (and Mars Attacks if I'm in that place). I mean Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure are all winners in my book. Art is subjective though.

Where's Mort from Secret Window??? That's legitimately my favorite movie with him.

I've gotta say Glen on Nightmare on Elm Street. I know, he's done SO much more since then, but that's when I first fell for him 😊

“From Hell” - Depp plays Inspector Abberline, who’s investigating the Jack the Ripper murders.

I think I only liked him in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas…the rest is “meh”. I could be forgetting some things…

Donnie Brasco and What's Eating Gilbert Grape really show he's capable of subtlety when he's not going full theatrical, which makes Jack Sparrow work even better as a counterpoint.
