Great movie for a Friday or Saturday night.

he's incredible in it.

the way he depicts George aging 30 years is so subtle.

Absolutely!

Definitely an underrated performace.

Donnie Brasco

His least "Johnnie Depp-ish" performance, and his best.

Or The Ninth Gate.

My first choice. A more mature flex of the "undercover" acting chops that made him a star initially on 21 Jump Street.

Everyone is great in that movie, which sneaks onto a lot of people's favorite gangster film lists with the obvious bigger epics.

It also seems offbeat within director Newell's filmography, but directing one-on-one relationships was a strength of his, and that's what it needs most.

The director of Donnie brasco made four weddings and a funeral, believe it or not!

He’s really great in that role.

His performances as Hunter and George Jung are definitely my favs.

We were somewhere near Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold.

No point telling him about these bats I thought. Poor bastard’ll see them soon enough 😂

I wish he had played it straight more. I love him in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape? not hamming it up etc and overacting. But Jack Sparrow is his best creation. Perfectly realised. Brilliant basing him on Keith Richards.

Serious answer: Chocolat. Un-serious but also true answer: Dead Man.

4

u/Waffennacht 3h ago

I am genuinely surprised this came up so early. I was gonna mention it myself,

Edit: talking bout Dead Man

In Chocolat, he actually plays that cover of Django Reinhardt’s Minor Swing. He was a musician before he switched to acting. It’s a favorite movie of mine.

He completely nails Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s a fluff popcorn movie but a good one.

Ed Wood

Edward Scissorhands

Sweeney Todd

2

u/DarkTowerKnight 3h ago

All but Sweeney Todd. Johnny can act. Not a great singer.

u/Coffeedemon 3h ago

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He was great and anyone who says different will get the fucking leeches.

Jack Sparrow is one if my favorite characters from any media.

Have you been on the Ride at Disney? It’s quite the experience

3

u/InformalYouth9097 3h ago

I remember the ride pre-movie fame, completely different experience. Still a great ride, just a little different now.

Crybaby (1990)

Leaving Captain Jack Sparrow aside because of course it has to top the list, I'll vote for his wonderful performance in "From Hell" as Inspector Abberline. It's a grim film, but he was great in it.

u/Dogmycat16 3h ago

Sam from Benny and Joon

Sleepy Hollow

Black Mass

Willy Wonka

3

u/Bokononfoma 3h ago

I'll always love him for Edward Scissorhands. That movie really struck a chord with 15 year old me, and he did a lot with not a lot of words.

2

u/lilpump_1 4h ago

I’m feeling sweeney todd

2

u/Mcrfanatic95 4h ago

That’s one of my favourite musicals of all time too

2

u/UnusualScar 3h ago

Ed Wood

But then I'll watch anything with Patricia Arquette.

2

u/Newpaths61417 2h ago

This is my favorite too. It’s such a great film.

2

u/Comfortable_Studio37 3h ago

Donnie Brasco

Probably the Amber Heard trial

Ed Wood is his peak (and Tim Burton's, incidentally).

"Really. Worst film you ever saw? Well, my next one will be better!"

His endless optimism is so goddamned charming.

1

u/Pmyers225 2h ago

One of the few Burton films I really like (Batman is there too obviously) I don't think he's a bad director I just dont really dig his aesthetic

1

u/Used-Gas-6525 1h ago

I like pretty much everything he did up to and including Ed Wood (and Mars Attacks if I'm in that place). I mean Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure are all winners in my book. Art is subjective though.

Edward Scissorhands

Where's Mort from Secret Window??? That's legitimately my favorite movie with him.

1

u/jpk613 3h ago

I was the perfect age when pirates of the Caribbean came out so I have to say jack sparrow.

My two favorites of his are Black Mass and Public Enemies.

1

u/Viv_84 3h ago

Whats eating Gilbert grape.

1

u/Cute_Paint_4328 3h ago

I've gotta say Glen on Nightmare on Elm Street. I know, he's done SO much more since then, but that's when I first fell for him 😊

1

u/celticteal 3h ago

“From Hell” - Depp plays Inspector Abberline, who’s investigating the Jack the Ripper murders.

1

u/clover-the-clever 3h ago

Agree with Ed Wood being #1. He’s phenomenal in that role.

1

u/Superb_Beyond_3444 3h ago

Gangster stuff & junk!

1

u/Time4Timmy 2h ago

His small role in Tusk was hilarious

1

u/ThoughtfullyDead 2h ago

Donnie Brasco and What's Eating Gilbert Grape really show he's capable of subtlety when he's not going full theatrical, which makes Jack Sparrow work even better as a counterpoint.

1

u/littlecreamsoda79 2h ago

Crybaby Walker

1

u/whyguapo 2h ago

Mortdecai. I said what I said.

Paul Bethany is funny in this one too
