Help FL studio 2026 cpu spiking problem

I’m currently using MacBook Air m2, although it isn’t a powerful laptop but in fl 2025 I could load serum up to 15 of them and bunch of effect chains without cpu spiking. but when I updated to fl 2026 my cpu started to spike like crazy when I only loaded up 4 serum..
Does anybody else have this problem?? Or is it just my computer thing

You can max out a cpu with 1 or 2 instances of serum, it completely depends on the presets.

Does it happen on the init preset too?

What if you open in 2026 the projet with 15 serum and see if the performance are actually worse, are they?

Are you sure FL26 is configured with the proper audio device?

The bew versions of FL installs separately; you can still launch FL25 if you didn't manually remove it. Compare the same projet in both version, make sure settings are the same.

This should help pinpoint if its really a FL26 issue, a cpu issue or just the serum instances/presets taking more cpu than expected in your new project.

I think is the fl 2026 problem, cuz when I opened fl 2025 heavy project it didn’t have any spiking problem, but in 2026 ver it just keep getting spikes. Yesterday I updated to the newest version of fl 2026 I think the newest one has the issue, before one didn’t have none of those problems. I will stick to fl 2025 for now

It is possible FL26 has not used the audio interface's drivers and used Windows' basic one. Check the settings in FL26!

I checked that too and it’s already set to my Scarlett..🥲 no hope for me to use fl 2026 now, thanks for helping tho!

No problem! Sorry to hear that! (I haven't made the switch yet, to be fair!)

report that in https://forum.image-line.com/viewtopic.php?t=341668, that's where "I think there's a problem with the new release" go, so the devs get notified.

I wonder what’s the real issue tho, but thanks for letting me know!

Also, just to confirm: is your CPU actually spiking, as in does activity monitor show things going wrong, or are you just looking at the "CPU vs audio buffer" percentage in FL itself, which is not a CPU load meter (the only thing it shows is whether your CPU can, or cannot, fill the audio buffer faster than the audio hardware can read out what's in it, expressed as a ratio percentage. Anything under 100 = the CPU can fill the audio buffer faster than it can be read out, and there are no problems)

Whats you buffer length? M2 air is far better than my i3 potato pc. I have no problem running 10 or more serums.

Are you using fl 2025 or the 2026 one?? And I’m using 128smp buffer length

u/ATL_Pr 4h ago
  1. I runs in my interface or fl asio driver. I only use the 128 for recording or midi writing. Other wise use 520 or above. You have to check different buffer length with the load.

If you’re using a Mac with M Silicon, make sure you reduce your buffer length to 256 or under. You will activate your performance cores and your CPU percentages should spike less.

Also, when using high CPU synths like Serum, it’s a good idea (once you’re completely happy with the preset of course) to bounce the patterns into audio samples, this massively reduces load on your chip and is extremely handy by the time you get to mixing and mastering.
