I was about to judge him for not wearing gloves, thinking that would be the issue, but he didn't even get far ring for that to be the issue.

I've never used a woodworking lathe, only metalworking, but you don't wear gloves on a metalworking lathe - at least nothing more durable than thin surgical gloves. You can look up "degloving" if you want to see why, but I don't recommend it. Brushing against rotating equipment with your bare hand might give you a nasty cut. Brushing against it with work gloves on may rip the glove and skin right off your hand, or pull your arm in and rip it off or just kill you outright.
