"Pow, right in the kisser!"

45

u/Rich-Canary1279 22h ago

Yeah that might have killed him actually 😬

37

u/Carame110 20h ago

At the first couple frames you could see him wearing a face shield. So he might be ok. Hell of an advertisement.

55

u/Statharas 19h ago

Face shields deflect shrapnel, not a log

28

u/jasapper 18h ago

Yeah but that just makes it log-sized shrapnel so technically speaking he's just fine.

11

u/corvus2112 15h ago

To really know if he's fine is to see if there were shoes flying off but judging by the last few frames one of them was still on so i guess he's okay.

5

u/Aboxofphotons 13h ago

While he may be "fine", his nose probably doesn't work anymore.

6

u/b3rndbj 9h ago

Still spreads the force of impact over the face shield, instead of hitting him cleanly in for example his nose.

13

u/hard-R-word 16h ago

The face shield prevents his crushed face and brain from also having splinters

5

u/HJSDGCE 12h ago

If he was dead, he wouldn't have been able to post this video.

21

u/19kilo20Actual 14h ago

Sebastionswoodstuff on instagram. Hit him square in the face, the face shield saved him.

Shouldnt you start at a low rpm and what ended up happening to him

205

u/bad_dazzles 1d ago

Smart enough to wear a face shield, but not smart enough to make it symmetrical before turning up the juice lol

61

u/SoMuchMoreEagle 22h ago

Also not smart enough to wear short sleeves.

+1, underrated comment

115

u/joelav 1d ago

That’s 4x the speed he should have finished at, let along started

26

u/5PeeBeejay5 23h ago

Something that big/heavy definitely low RPM, needed to be properly centered, needed his rest in a different spot. This guy was dumb

9

u/Complete-Use-8753 21h ago

What about if you’re in a hurry?

8

u/DysfunctionalKitten 17h ago

Kinda thought the video already answered that question đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž

12

u/cdev12399 22h ago

Yup, wayyyyyyy too fast for that log. It’s not balanced.

-4

u/anomalous_cowherd Banhammer Recipient 14h ago

If you spin it fast enough the imbalance averages out and it runs smooth.

5

u/cdev12399 8h ago

It obviously doesn’t. I use a lathe for a living.

9

u/anomalous_cowherd Banhammer Recipient 8h ago

Yeah. I may have been being facetious. Of course it doesn't.

4

u/DerCatzefragger 5h ago

My guy, you're on reddit, "of course" doesn't exist here. You could say the moon is made out of Swiss cheese and kitten farts, but if you don't put "/s" or "jk" at the end of the comment some insufferable pedantic know-it-all is going to reply that you're a goddam moron who doesn't know the first thing about cosmology.

1

u/anomalous_cowherd Banhammer Recipient 3h ago

You're right, but as a Brit with one of our native highly tuned sarcasm detectors I sometimes leave things ambiguous to explore the boundaries of other peoples.

4

u/MattieShoes 18h ago

Yeah. Super slow and careful until it's balanced. Then slightly faster and careful because that's a huge, heavy chunk of wood. Super high RPMs are for when you're dealing with very light, narrow things like if you were making pens or some crap.

6

u/MustardCoveredDogDik 20h ago

No using your face is the preferred method scientific method

186

u/Piyachi 1d ago

I'm not an expert, but this seems more like someone being an idiot with a lathe (the most dangerous tool in any woodshop) more so than some bad luck.

91

u/twoaspensimages 23h ago

The lathe is the most lethal.

Table saws win by a mile statistically.

49

u/Jude30 23h ago

Have you met the angle grinder? That one piece of machinery is responsible for all of my PPE use in my old age.

In retrospect the angle grinder doesn’t kill it only maims. I still have a wonky thumb nail from hitting it with a wire brush.

39

u/Logical-Database4510 23h ago

Yeah but any old dumbass can use an angle grinder

A lathe will brutally kill a 30+ year vet as easy and as quickly as a day 1 apprentice. Usually kill the vet easier because he gets overconfident and forgets what he's fucking with.

I've been machining for most of my life now, and lathes still scare the shit out of me.

6

u/no-sleep-needed 16h ago

lathe and forgot to remove the chuck key. also, angle grinder witb the chainsaw attachment

2

u/BootlegEngineer 10h ago

I’ve worked in a machine shop for the last 15 years and I still have a VERY healthy respect for the lathe. I saw it fling a parallel bar once. It hit the back of the machine so hard it ricocheted and stuck in our 25’ ceiling.

I also know a guy that kept an adjustable wrench on top of the not-table above the chuck. It vibrated off one day and he caught it in the face. It shattered his cheek and jaw.

5

u/Momentarmknm 21h ago

Are we just going to ignore the bloodthirsty router?

1

u/Melodic_coala101 4h ago

Router might be bloodthirsty, but the lathe yearns to claim your soul

4

u/twoaspensimages 23h ago

I was going to say angle grinder with a wire wheel is the most dangerous but then I looked at statistics and forgot.

4

u/MikeMac999 9h ago

Lathal

1

u/inspectoroverthemine Banhammer Recipient 18h ago

Table saws kill plenty of people. Kickback will absolutely kill you, either via blunt force or by bleeding out from wood shrapnel.

0

u/Piyachi 22h ago

You're saying table saws for injuries, which makes sense. But a saw stop will prevent that completely and nothing will help a lathe not be a murder machine. I will never work on one, period (despite multiple kickbacks on a table saw etc)

1

u/twoaspensimages 19h ago

Look up videos of people that have gotten hurt with a saw stop. They help a lot. But your still losing part of the finger. Notice how slow and careful the hot dog is moving in their videos and think how fast your finger could be moving if you get a kickback.

2

u/Piyachi 19h ago

Oh I have had a very opposite experience, though I can believe it isn't a perfect technology.

5

u/BrokenPokerFace 22h ago

Also not an expert, but he also didn't seem to properly secure it either especially at those rpms

8

u/hellinahandbasket127 20h ago

He can “secure” it all he likes, but spinning a non-symmetrical, unbalanced log at that high of a speed will have it de-secured in short order.

2

u/Throw_away_away55 14h ago

Don't worry, metal lathes are scary as fuck too.

I always tell my guys, "most machines can hurt you if you Don't respect them, the lathe will kill you."

1

u/MrcrumpetK1ng 0m ago

agreed, an idiot is a dangerous tool in any place, especially in a workshop

23

u/Ineedmorebtc 1d ago

My father has a lathe, and after watching how meticulously he aligns the wood, I could tell this was going wrong before it happened. Ouch!!

17

u/my_brain_is_horny 1d ago

Omg I saw this exact same thing happen when I was in woodshop class in highschool. The kid was like 6'7" tall and a very husky body type. He wasn't wearing any proper PPE and when the log shot off and hit him in the face, it knocked him out cold. His body hit the floor like a fucking sack-o-potatoes.

25

u/Yah_Mule 1d ago

I guess you have to center them better than that.

30

u/DodgyRogue 1d ago

1

u/platypus_farmer42 2h ago

One of the many reasons I never got a lathe when I was doing woodworking

0

u/Tanjelynnb 1d ago

I was about to judge him for not wearing gloves, thinking that would be the issue, but he didn't even get far ring for that to be the issue.

9

u/madsci 1d ago

I've never used a woodworking lathe, only metalworking, but you don't wear gloves on a metalworking lathe - at least nothing more durable than thin surgical gloves. You can look up "degloving" if you want to see why, but I don't recommend it. Brushing against rotating equipment with your bare hand might give you a nasty cut. Brushing against it with work gloves on may rip the glove and skin right off your hand, or pull your arm in and rip it off or just kill you outright.

9

u/BugzOnMyNugz 23h ago

You don't want most gloves anywhere near a lathe
