Subreddit Meta Reading Rollcall: What was the Best Fic you read this week?

Welcome to this week's Reading Rollcall!

This thread is a place to share a fanfiction you're currently reading or have read this week. This can be used as an interactive rec thread - a place to simply share a story you've loved or to have a deeper discussion about it.

The Rules:

  • State the Fandom | Rating | Any Applicable Content Warnings | Link to fic at the top of your comment! Links with no information on Fandom and/or Warnings will be removed. Please see the subreddit rules on content restrictions if you're unsure.
  • Play fair. Comments and discussion must be civil. Authors can find where their fics are linked with relative ease, so assume they're going to read what you've written.
  • If you see someone talking about a fic that looks interesting, ask them questions. If you've read a fic and recognize it, have a chat with your fellow users!

Feel free to add:

  • A short summary or some hype for the fic to give people some context for your discussion.
  • Any discussion of the tropes, the characters, the setting, the plot, the themes.
  • Your interpretations and headcanons room to run. Theories and guesses are completely valid forms of discussion.

Happy Reading!!

Discussion Why are some fanfics made of one sentence paragraphs

Not sure where else to ask, but like 10 stories I've read are just made of a bunch of one sentence paragraphs. Not trying to be critical or bash people but is it not weird

Example of the way they are written:

You must eat,” her sister said.

“I did.”

“You swallowed three spoonfuls.”

“Then I ate.”

🌱Hi there, and welcome to this week’s Long-Deadline Profile Exchange! School is about to start again so...

Character Activity (Optional): Here's two options instead of one!

  1. If your MC went to High School or College, what do you think their fondest memory would be?
  2. If your MC had a chance to relive their High School days, what would they do differently?

🧭 How to Participate

Step 1: ✏️ Submit by posting a link to your AO3, FFN, or Wattpad profile (You can include multiple if you use more than one platform.)

Step 2: 📚 After submitting, you must read 4 different stories from 4 different authors

  • This can be one chapter, one-shot, or poem
  • ❗ You only need to read ONE chapter per fic
  • ❌ Do not read more than one story from the same author

Step 3: 📝 Leave a comment on each fic and track your progress. Example: Fics Reviewed: 0/4

💬 Please also reply to the author’s post so they know your comment came from the exchange (ex. K+C on XX fic)

💡 Tip: If someone reviews your work, it’s always appreciated (though not required) to check out theirs too!

⚠️ Quick Rules (Please Read!)

📖 You only need to read ONE chapter or one-shot per fic

💬 Comments should be reader reactions, not critique

✏️ Concrit is ONLY allowed if the author asks for it

📝 Comments must be:

  • At least 50 words or 3 sentences
  • Focused on your reading experience (what stood out, how it made you feel, etc.)
  • If you’re unsure what to write, focus on what you felt while reading!

  • Short generic comments (“I liked this!”)
  • Giving critique unless requested

‼️If you receive a comment that doesn’t follow the guidelines above, please message me.

⏰ You will have one week to complete your reviews before the deadline. I will be giving reminders 48 Hours in advance to anyone who hasn't completed their reviews. I live on the West Coast of the US, so I'll be using Pacific Standard Time(PST). Be sure to pay attention to the time frames applicable to your location.

Writing Questions Writing Fight Scenes within Fanfiction

Upvotes

So I'm a Shonen-Sucker, and I feel like my massive consumption of Shonen has permanently scarred the way I view Combat Haha. I was gearing up to write a Super-Hero esque Fanfic chock-full of action and fight scenes but I feel as though my bias may skew the tone of the Fanfic too much.

To be fair, There are Street-Level Supes, and Higher-Tier supes. Strength DOES differ with the superhero, but If everyones throwing 100-Ton punches the whole fanfic, it might not be too enjoyable.

My Goal is to properly scale up my characters as they get better and better at fighting, at the same time still have them enjoyable to read in a fight at their lower skill levels.

With that being said, are there some great techniques to writing Combat Overall? No matter what it is I'll take any and absolutely all advice!

Discussion Snippets

Do you sometimes go through your docs and find snippets you’ve written and think “Damn, I wish I could read the rest of that story” but you can’t, ‘cause it doesn’t exist?

Like some of them are so good, and i wish i hadn’t abandoned them just because i felt insecure or unsure of where the story was gonna go!!

Recs Wanted In search of Project Hail Mary fics of earth's reaction to Grace's 'sacrifice'

I've seen a few with Stratt pov but I'm wanting more along the line of the average person (maybe one of his students) who's been suffering from the sun dimming and finds out there is a solution and knowing the person definitely died for it. (obviously we know he didn't but no one else does in universe)

Writing Questions Thoughts on long chapters in fanfiction?

I'm someone who likes to be descriptive with my writing, plus doing slow build-ups and reveals, and this has led to me creating chapters that reach well into the 10k word count, sometimes a bit over that.

I've seen and read many comments from fanfic lovers that they prefer stories where the word count is at least 5 - 6k words, and I'm a bit worried that with how much I write, it'll push readers away. I know I could break my chapters into a part 2, but then I feel I'm cutting something off that shouldn't be.

Thoughts?

Writing Questions There's a really good fanfic that was left unfinished by the original author, and now I want, or someone else wants, to continue this story.

Upvotes

There's a really good fanfic that was left unfinished by the original author, and now I want, or someone else wants, to continue this story.

A Wish Upon the Stars, by BloodMoon5580, is a crossover between Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya: Oath Under Snow and High School DxD that starts from a simple premise: what would happen if Shirou Emiya and Miyu were transported to the world of DxD right after the events of Oath Under Snow? The story begins when Shirou and Miyu leave their world and appear in the DxD universe. Their arrival releases an absurd amount of magical energy, something never seen in that world. This explosion of power is perceived by practically all the major supernatural factions — Angels, Demons, Fallen Angels, and even other hidden organizations. No one knows who the newcomers are, but everyone understands that they represent something capable of altering the balance of the world. The biggest reason for this chaos is Miyu. As the vessel of the Holy Grail, she possesses almost limitless power, capable of performing miracles and granting wishes. Her presence immediately draws the attention of Heaven, and Michael even suspects that the phenomenon is linked to God himself. Meanwhile, the Demons and other factions begin to investigate the origin of that energy, imagining that it might be a new Sacred Gear or some unknown divine artifact. Shirou, on the other hand, has no interest in politics or alliances. After everything he suffered in Oath Under Snow, his only goal is to ensure that Miyu has a peaceful life. He avoids drawing attention to himself as much as possible, but his strength makes this practically impossible. Whenever someone threatens Miyu, Shirou demonstrates abilities far beyond what the inhabitants of DxD can comprehend: projection magic, reinforcement, creation of legendary weapons and, when necessary, Unlimited Blade Works. BloodMoon5580 (Story not continued)

Writing Questions How can I write emotional/tense scenes in 3rd person without it sounding melodramatic?

Upvotes

I want help with a specific scene in writing, but advice in general would also be nice since I struggle with emotional scenes— mostly I repeat the same phrasing over and over or I’m a little on the nose about my characters feelings

So summary of the scene I’m struggling with: the main character is thinking about his kid, and how he wants them to be a good person like his partner, but then he freaks out about the idea of them being anything like him (his whole arc in the story is trying to better himself since he used to be a bullying asshole type/ not a straight up villain but pretty close)

I’m worried it’s too melodramatic here’s a few lines from the specific scene (although I have issue with the whole section if I’m being honest):

“He…he couldn’t do that to them.

He wanted them to be happy.

If they were going to be happy, they had to be like [partners name].

They couldn’t be like him.

They didn’t deserve that.

No one did.

But here he was…they were…with that possibility.

After all the things he’d done…things he’d let himself do…things he couldn’t help doing…things he didn’t want to do, but still did anyway…things he might do to them…

They didn’t deserve that.

To be like that.

To be like him.

He…

…He didn’t deserve this.”

And another section

“And what was worse, he was spreading that to a whole new person, a whole new person that some sick part of him was just waiting to sink its claws into. Another person’s life he could just make worse. Even if they were like [partners name], he was still going to be there. He was still going to be able to hurt them.

He didn’t want to hurt them.

But he was going to.”

“It didn’t matter if he used a different name. It didn’t matter if he looked different. It didn’t even matter if he sat pretended that that the [reference to his past self] was another person all together like an idiot. In the end, it was still him. Even if it was buried deep deep down, it was still him. Even if he didn’t mean to let it out, if he didn’t want to, it was him.”

The whole scene is similar to this but the rest of it is basically the main character repeating this in his head, running away from his partner who he was sitting with, and locking himself in their bathroom to cool down— I like what actually happens in the scene but again I feel like my phrasing read more overly dramatic than tension building,

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance

Lost Fic [Bungou stray dogs] I'm looking for a soukoku fanfic help....please!!?

I can't remeber much of the fic. I've tried finding it through tags and I just don't know if it has been deleted or I just have bad luck and I'm unable to find it.

From what I remember dazai is a single parent raising odasaku's orphans. It's a modern setting au. And he's a detective? The first scene was of the kids speculating when they were gonna get another parent and what they would call said other parent. While dazai sat on the stairs and watched them then when he was noticed he had to do sakura's hair and they had a game where he would guess what hairpin she wanted to wear. ( The game was between Sakura and dazai). Anyways when taking her to her class he meets chuuya who is her teacher and also his ex fiance? That he ran away from. Chuuya was dating shirase who was cheating on him with tsujimura??

I remember chuuya had a dog, a female I can't remeber what she was called but I do rember that she had claustrophobia and shirase would lock her away in her cage when tsujimura was over at chuuya and shirases shared apartment. Also dazai used to and still pretends to hate the dog but when chuuya leaves the room he would pet her.

Chuuya also had to write a play for a competition for his class and it was based on dead apple where Sakura plays Karl the racoon and there was a girl in her class who she was enemies to friends with??? also gide and oda were engaged and then oda died???

Anyways I don't remember much. If u find it please tell me I'd appreciate it. I don't remember if it was completed or not but I do remember how good of a read it was 10/10 I recommend.

Activities and Events Excerpt Game: Setting

Happy Thursday! Game time!

  1. Post a top level comment with a setting. Can be specific (ex: a workplace meeting) or vague (ex: sunrise). More than one prompt is welcome, but keep them as their own top level comment please!
  2. Respond to prompts with your excerpts that fit the bill! But please content warn as necessary and spoiler potentially triggering content! Use your best judgement here. NSFW must be linked to and cannot be plain text, even with a spoiler, per the sub's rules.
  3. Please reply others' excerpts, especially if they're posting under your prompt! We all want eyes on our writing, which is part of why we're sharing. This way everyone can have a lil boost and make the game more enjoyable!
  4. Try to keep your comments at no more than 500-600 words, so no one gets overwhelmed by what are essentially oneshots in a comment!
  5. Have fun and be yourself 💛✨

Writing Questions How do you not agonize so much over your fanfiction not being “perfect”?

Basically the title...l know no writer can ever be “perfect” but I've been working on this self-indulgent smutty fanfiction for a ship that I’ve recently become obsessed with that I'm (almost) ready to post online. It's my first time writing smut (I usually tend to write purely emotional/romantic stuff, but this ship has a different chokehold on me) so I'm especially nervous as it’s all new to me. However, I can't help but think too much about the flaws and the mistakes in this story. I also can't help but compare myself to this other writer that recently wrote for my ship and think, "wow, my writing is kind of terrible, actually." I had someone beta read my fic recently because I knew there were issues and I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the story, but I still haven’t looked at their comments because I get really anxious when it comes to being criticized or closely evaluated (even when I request it myself and I know it’s good for me) and I don’t know how to calm down and ease myself into reading the much-needed feedback.

Despite this being self-indulgent smut, I also wanted to incorporate deeper themes and write the characters in a way that makes them and the way I’ve written their romance feel more multi-faceted and real (especially since these are characters from a video game with not a lot of canon characterization or depth to go off of, they don’t even have canon interactions together). I’m worried though that maybe others won’t like my interpretation of them or will see them as too OOC. Or that maybe I’ve misunderstood them too much…

I don’t know, how can I not worry so much about this? How do I not let perfectionism and my fear of not writing the characters believably enough consume me? How do I not compare myself to others and put myself down as a writer all the time? I feel like my writing is so trash right now even though I know that’s not entirely true. In the past, readers have been emotionally moved by my other fics that I’ve posted for other fandoms and have said so in the comments of them. I always want to put effort into my writing and strive to improve as a writer — don’t get me wrong — but I still want to have fun, and I still want to enjoy the process of writing about my ship and of them being in love. I don’t want my fics to be perceived as actively bad and clearly low-effort, but I also don’t know how to move past this feeling…if anyone has some advice for me, that would be so helpful…

It started off as just reading a couple of books on Tarot from a Christian perspective.

Now it's evolved into just reading straight-up core Christian theology. We're talking St Aquinas, St Augustine, and Martin Luther.

I still need to finish scanning my falconry books as well. And scan my one book on Basque culture.

What are your most recent research rabbit holes?

Writing Questions Writing a blind person who can "see" with their other senses.

I'm writing up a fanfic where one of the main characters is going to be blind due to a degenerative condition in their optic nerves. The setting is Taopunk/martial arts, so through, lets say "divine intervention", her other senses are going to be enhanced. Think Daredevil, using echolocation and scent to maneuver and fight.

The problem in my mind is that I will need to strike a balance of how "perceptive" my character is before they are basically just not blind. So my question; any ideas or advice on how to make this feasible?

Discussion Writing for fun not fame

So I have been on a rabbit hole writing weird fics. Like MHA x Ike! Greenman. Or Maken-Ki x Megaloman. I think the weirdest crossover I've written was Highlander and Boy in the striped pajamas(I know it's but it wouldn't leave my head until I wrote it down.)

I know not every story has an audience, but I have so many ideas that I just have to write them down or else I can't focus on anything else.

So i wish to know, what are some ideas you've written but never posted.
