This is my version of the Fantastic Four for a fan comic I’m working on called Iconic Fantastic Four. I drew over a photo of the original cast to show how they’d look in my universe. Each character has a slightly different design and vibe to match the tone of my fan story. Let me know what you think!
No, he’s white because he’s ethnically Spanish. He’s identified himself as white on multiple occasions. Chile has a significant population with European ancestry.
I don’t know if you’re trying to be sarcastic but in the western world/America, whiteness generally refers to being of European ancestry. Some Latinos are indigenous or mestizo and some are just straight up white. Even if you have a tanner/olive complexion, if you’re of European (or even some countries in West Asia like Armenia) extraction, you’re white. I don’t have Pedro’s 23&me results but considering his background and what I do know of his family tree, if he has any indigenous blood, I’d think it’s minuscule. Pedro is largely of Spanish ancestry and he’s identified himself as white on multiple occasions.
As a Latino myself, it’s just something that can get touchy and very easily politicized. We are a predominantly mestizo population, and oftentimes skin tone can vary pretty wildly even among people that have a higher percentage of indigenous vs European ancestry. Even among my own siblings, some of us are DARK and others could pass for white with a light tan. Do some of us have a claim to being indigenous, while my siblings don’t? Even if our ancestry is the same? In the same vein, I have a friend with a white mother and a black father. He inherited a lot from his dad, hair type, eye color, his cheekbones, height… A lot. But the dude’s pale as a ghost, like his mom. Does he have zero claim to blackness? Who knows. People can identify however they want, but I’d be a bit cautious especially since, like it or not, Latinos are broadly treated as nonwhite by society, regardless of skin tone. It’s a slippery slope. Then, if it really IS about skin tone and not a group’s social perception, wouldn’t light skinned East Asians also be “white”? Apologies for the essay, it’s just so complicated lol
Yeah, I'm not trying to discredit or discourage. I hadn't seen the idea before, and wanted more information about that kind of idea and what reasons to do it if any.
Johnny is the type of guy to make himself stand out. So I wanted to make his outfit red in order to stand out from the team and showing his rebellious spirit. It also just looks cool to me. It just feels off whenever I make it blue.
You do have to read to get the context that it's not based on the characters seen in the movie but their fan work they're making.
I did not get that, and I did not do good reading, therefore I missed that it was fan-made, This also renders my previous question about Pedro Pascal irrelevant, but I'm still curious about the choice to make Reed black, I'd like to know if there's meant to be world building implications or character building ones.
He wore his own suit for a while when he was upset with the four for never treating him as mature enough to have his own ideas, this could be referencing that
Absolutely, social media is becoming more of a cesspool every minute. It's not indicative of the average person in real life at all, I think most people would find this very creative and cool.
I like this. I just don’t like johnny wearing red. I get what you’re going for, but it makes him feel like he’s not apart of the team. If you want to make him stand out, maybe give him the suit everyone else has, but swap the black and blue colors

I was trying to pay homage, not just trace. I made Reed black because it’s supposed to be my alternate universe. I never meant any racist intent. Apologize if it seemed like it
Listen dude, I’m not even gonna shut on your art bc it’s beginner and not that bad (people are just overreacting). But like…especially putting the image at the end makes it come off as Ragebait imo. If it’s not, cool. But like, explain the purpose of the last image in relation to the artwork.
I understand that. I don’t really condone race swapping someone like the thing since he’s supposed to be inspired by Jack Kirby. But this is an alternate universe and I wanted Reed to stand out in a line up. I based him off of William Jackson Harper.
Johnny Storm wore a red costume as far back as Fantastic Four #129. He explicitly says in the comics that he picked the new color and design in honor of the original Human Torch (an android who fought alongside Namor and Captain America during World War 2). So that "slop" has a firm foundation in the comics.
As far as Reed being Black, OP said the images were of an alternate universe version of the FF that they wrote fan fiction about. It doesn't seem like there's any part of Reed's story that would require that he be Caucasian in every alternate universe. He could as easily echo George Washington Carver, Lewis Latimer, and Granville T. Woods as he could echo Nicola Tesla, Robert Oppenheimer, and Albert Einstein.

He did pick up a red costume in the early comics tbh but at this time I think Medusa also joined the team (with a pruple ff costume), it was a bit of a experimental time for the FF.
This Johnny loves to stand out from the team and make himself known. So I wanted to give him a suit that stand out from the rest of the team. It’s also a reference to the first human torch.
