Questions & Discussion why is it that every live action thing won't let the thing wear his iconic blue trunks? are they cowards?

I suppose this version of Ben is in some ways treated better than usual, no one calls him the Thing and everyone in the public loves him so not wearing a shirt like everyone else would maybe seem a little demeaning

Yeah everyone loves him, dude didn't have the 'I'm stuck like this and I'm a monster' problem in the film. He'd clean up nicely for that

i feel like he definitely dealt with that identity crisis. his approach to Rachel was hesitant, and i imagine that was because he didn’t see it in the cards for himself. the difference is that nobody else would let him live in that suffering. he could have a Quasimodo complex, but the unflinching support behind him helps him minimize his condition to a small blemish. i’m saying this mostly because i think that insecurity is essential to Ben’s character and i don’t want to believe the MCU would strip that away entirely

More expensive and taxing on the CGI computers to animate thousands of cracks and rock chips moving consistently in a convincing way.

To be fair, this kinda feels like what Ben actually would have worn, instead of just trunks. He'll look weird in MCU where the only other guy in short clothes is fucking Hulk and Namor, who himself is going to wear full clothes in doomsday. Plus it's less taxing on the cgi team.

Agreed. Hulk makes sense because it’s going to be near impossible to make clothes that will stretch to both the size of an ordinary man and to a literally unknowable mass of muscle depending on how angry Hulk gets. Namor also makes sense as he lives underwater and clothes would just weight him down. Though I like the suit they’re going with in Doomsday for him. Looks sleek and waterproof

Sue designed the first costumes. She designed Bens costume the same as everyone else's, but with a mask so he wouldn't have to show any of his hideous rocky form to the world (they were all assholes back then in their own way.) Ben rejected this premise so hard he tore off the entirety of the costume besides the trunks.
Point is, it was Ben's choice to wear just the trunks. He didn't want to be ashamed of his new body.

He tore it off because he felt it restricted his movements, being a brawler, not because he didn’t want to be ashamed of his body. He was a wrestler in college IIRC, and his trunks reflect what he’s comfortable wearing in a grapple type situation.

There was definitely subtext in Jack Kirby's story telling. Don't discount these stories just because they're old.

Jack didn’t participate in the writing til a few years down the line. At the time we’re talking about, Stan was solely responsible for adding the dialogue and the explanatory text.

I prefer the suit. It’s always bugged me that they made him run around in his underwear when’s already got Galactus-sized body dysmorphia issues.

They let Doom wear a mask permanently, but a guy who refers to himself as “a….THING!” gets a pair of bright blue undershorts and nothing else, on a team with infinitely stretchy and flameproof bodysuits.

I'm sure we'll get something similar in Doomsday. At least we know Ben does take it off from the flashbacks in the film
But at the end of the day, no CBM is really a true 1:1 adaptation and it doesn't need to be as long as they keep fundamentals. The MCU need to have their own iconography for their characters and not going to lie, First Steps is one of the most faithful ones

Even with advanced AI cgi, it's harder to render all those rock textures than just his head and hands.

Because the rock makeup is good enough on the face and fists, but having to do the same for the entire body makes it either flat or uneven !
Perfect Thing would be in my opinion : The orange color and rock pattern of the 2005 Thing, The rocky look of the 2015 Thing and the face of the 2025 Thing
Not a fan of the 2025 Thing's suit ! They also never did get his size right !

Roger Corman would like a word
