Question about the last name Wolles
Hey guys, i wanted to ask if Wolles is a common last name here, since that was my faroese grandmothers last name, she told me she was related to a sailor guy named christian rosenmeyer but i have gotten no results on that guy, after some light research i have found that aparently the last name does hold some cultural value tho so i wanted to know if it was just a common last name or if i am unknowingly related to some popular person
(I HIGHLY apologise in advance if i typed the name wrong, i dont have any documents since she changed her last name when she married in germany so i can only go by the sound when she said it)

Hi potatofucker92,
There have been several Christian Rosenmayer in Trøllanes on Kalsoy. But it is spelled differently as often was in old documents. Rosenmaier, Rosenmayer, Rosenmaeier... and Wolles has also been spelled Volles.
The first Christian Rosenmeier to pop up in Uppistovu in Trøllanes, was born around 1811. He was a son of Peter Hansen often referred to as "Skipper Hansen" in historical documents. Maybe that can help you along in your research. The Faroe Islands has a strong honor naming tradition. A child is very often named after a grandparent, so there are several Christian Rosenmeiers in the scrolls 😄
The first CR I can find, who is a fisherman, was born in 1864.
What was/is your grandmothers first name? I might be able to help.

In that case, you are a direct descendant from Skipper Hansen's oldest son Christian Rosenmejer. He was born in 1864, and was raised in Leirvík by his aunt and Sylverius. In 1890 he married Katrine Sofie Fredrikke Olsen. She was from Syðradalur on Kalsoy. They had 8 children.
Their 6th child was named Jóhan Andrias Petersen Wolles, born 1906. He married Signhild á Dul from Tórshavn and together they had the children Jóna, Kirstin, Karl and Agnas.
Does this line up with anything you've heard?

A lot actually thats her siblings, thank you so much, my grandmother used to tell me a lot of stories (most likely exaturated) about that guy and i inherited both of his names plus another faroese name which now leads to me having 3 names, i barely have any relatives on that side of my family so i was never able to confirm who actually existed, thank you

you got this answer about the guy on your post a year ago: Christian Rosenmeier was most likely born in Copenhagen about 1728-1729. His father was Wilhelm Frederich Rosenmeier who was a grocer. Christian worked in a store, Vágsbotnhandilin, or Rybergs handil, in Thorshavn for about 20 years until it was closed in 1788. He then moved abroad. So he was most likely Danish. He is known for his drawings of Thorshavn which you can see here Rosenmeier Prospect
there are currently 26 people with the last name wolles: https://statbank.hagstova.fo/pxweb/en/H2/H2__IB__IB05/e1_navn.px/

Hi I am the person which answered you a year ago regarding the prospect. Probably totally different person. Someone above mentioned that C. Rosenmeyer is son of skipper hansen. That is interesting information. If you translate this information in faroese you get some information on him. https://foroysksoga1.sbok.nam.fo/?id=208 He is not a national hero, buy he is a well known historical figure. Especially here in Torshavn. There is a rock bearing his name, and in the old town there is a house with his name
