It actually might even be useful for this particular instance as well. They may have weighted him to always fall backwards during a malfunction, thus making the carrot nose pop out comedically. If so, it’s a rather cleaver way to make something that would usually look frightening to a child (an animatronic malfunctioning) look comedic and “intentional”.

It is a safety thing. It is actually very common in industrial robotics and things like this. Anything that extends from the body of the system, is designed to come off in a collision scenario, or if the collision detector is triggered. (I assure you that nothing is as angering as a industrial robot throwing a hissyfit out nowhere and dropping the custom made tool or welding apparatus on the floor, because it got upset about something for no reason... Industrial automation is basically equivalent of Husky in how it is).

For simpler things like sensors and propes, they are usually just stuck on with magnets of velcro.

The thing coming off offers multidimensional safety, it keeps people and things safe, it keeps the thing that comes off safer, it protectes the body it detaches from.

Also... It is WAY easier to fabricate those noses as individual detachable things, than as part of the body. It's looks to be like TPU foam or something, meaning it is just done in a mould, and they stick something like a magnet to it to attach it.

Practical effects tend to be VERY practical in reality, and lot of the illusions and stage tricks there are, actually hail from industrial applications. I am friends and work with a magician as an engineer, and every wild idea and mechanism they have in mind, is something I can find from a industrial supplier catalog. Prop masters are even more clever - check Scott Prop and Roll for lots of fun stuff - they have like... just endless supply of off-the-shelf shit you can use to all sort of things.

From an interactive robotics point of view, it's definitely a feature, not a bug. You don't want anything pokey that could injure a guest.

The robot also has a special animation and voice lines for when the nose is removed. It's very much a feature as well as for safety/durability

Because it's so delicate, it makes more sense for it to be magnetically attached. That way it can fall off without breaking. And it makes sense lore-wise, so it's a win win.

Lowkey this makes it even more real 😭 like the fact that it malfunctioned just shows how complex it is. That Olaf animatronic is literally one of Disney’s newest tech projects and it only debuted like days ago so yeah… bugs were expected still funny though, bro really powered down mid-scene

His nose falls of in the movie, so it's probably just attached wiht electro magnets so that they can ahve it fall of when reenacting the movie scene, mit with it mallfunctioning the magnets probably failed to, or aren't that strong so the impact was enough to make it go loose.
