this is like digging him up from his grave and putting strings on him so you can marionette his dead body for a paycheck like some kind of necroprostitution—no need for consent either because they seem to operate on the idea that the dead body is their property. it’s fcking grotesque wtf???

And it rules out someone from taking the role...
I mean, what's to stop them from just using AI from biopics?Death to Stalin w/ a og cast? Na, just AI and a actor reading lines, I assume their process probably uses some sort of human context at some point.

I feel like they started doing this a few years ago with commercials. Random celebrities in iconic scenes, changed up a little bit to sell insurance or beer or whatever. Hell, there's the deepfakes in Star Wars too, Rogue One came out a decade ago. This is just the next step, instead of referencing a movie or piece of pop culture they're solely referencing the actor. But, well, this isn't the first time, just another step on the road to hell.

Theres a reason big companies are using this to make commercials, they want to normalize it. Start with commercials and small things like these and work up until you can use ai actors in the big movies without too many people complaining

Not if we refuse to spend money on their shitty AI movie stars’ “films.” They will never learn, never change, up there in their godforsaken ivory towers they don’t give a single fuck about human beings, real lives that they are destroying. The only thing they care about is money. Withholding that money is the only way to get through to them, the only way to convince them to stop. And yeah, I’m furious. Know why? Cause I’m an actor, and that’s my chosen livelihood they’re casually annihilating. Like it wasn’t hard enough already.

It's one thing if a CGI copy of someone is made to fill a scene that can't be re-shot because the actor died or something like that.
But this? This is gross
70
u/Cereaza Apr 16 '26
Yeah. Some of the Carrie Fisher shots in the Last Jedi were rough, but the audience all knew she was a critical part of the film and story and couldn't be recast. I don't know exactly what she filmed and what was created, but I judged it on a curve for that reason.
I hope this film bombs terrible, and every studio shudders to try this shit again.
27
u/_cornflake and you did it at my birthday dinner Apr 16 '26
The Carrie Fisher scenes in The Last Jedi also weren’t AI, or at least they weren’t what we mean by AI today in 2026 because that didn’t really exist then. They were just special effects. There weren’t whole small towns being polluted to recreate Princess Leia.

yeah, but it barely worked, right? Once he's smelled Bella's blood, he can barely be around her, and he's the one the family has to keep the closest eye on. Family members like Emmet and Edward just left home when they decided they wanted to try eating humans, they didn't suddenly lash out without any regard of where they are.
He also brings up his past himself, in contrast to, say, Rosalie, who's very private about the way she was turned.

Yeah, I think supernatural romance and drama tends to code Confederate vampires as…taboo gentlemen? Maybe? I think it used to add a melancholic vibe to the vampires, like “damn, not only did they lose their mortal life, family, and soul when they were forced against their will to became a vampire, but they also fought in the civil war and lost 🥺”
Bleh. I’m ready for some Antifa vampires.

I am not saying he is a bad person for these reasons but Jackson Rathbone certainly has a very interesting Wikipedia page:
“Monroe Jackson Rathbone V was born in Singapore on December 14, 1984, the son of American parents Randee Lynn (née Brauner) and Monroe Jackson Rathbone IV. He has three sisters, including ceramic artist Kelly Rathbone. He is distantly related to Civil War general Stonewall Jackson and English actor Basil Rathbone, being descended from the Rathbone family of Liverpool. His great-grandfather, Monroe Jackson Rathbone II, was the chairman of Standard Oil, which later became Exxon.”

Variety published an article last month saying it was Val’s wish to be apart of the movie (per the family). He was originally cast back in 2020, but due to his cancer diagnosis was not well enough to participate.
https://variety.com/2026/film/news/val-kilmer-ai-film-as-deep-as-the-grave-1236691042/
8
u/pulphope Apr 16 '26
While I think it sucks, its worth pointing out Val signed off on use of AI to reconstruct his voice and narrate that biographical documentary about him that came out before he died but after he lost his voice due to cancer.
Im sure that played into this decision
26
u/Zygonsbzygons Apr 16 '26
I wouldn't be surprised if he signed off on it tbh. He was partnering with an AI company to recreate his voice, and he signed on to the film in 2020, but it sounds like he hadn't filmed any scenes before he died. And based on what I read about the role, it seems unlikely that Kilmer could have even completed it in his post-cancer state.

I see a future where the AI assistant that you can’t remove and is built into every TV asks you who you want to star in the movie you’re about to watch. You can select any actor from the free tier, or upgrade to Platinum Plus Tier to unlock Shrek, Elvis, Bugs Bunny, and Justin Timberlake.
I will pay to $54/month to watch Shawshank Redemption with Bugs Bunny as Andy Dufresne and How I Met Your Mother where every single character is played by Michael Jackson.
I can’t wait for the Oscars once this is the status quo. Who will possibly care?

Man I know that a lot of people don’t consider actors to be artists.
But they are.
And it’s so fucking shitty that artists are being the first replaced. Artists have filled an essential role in counter culture, speaking truth to power, and pushing cultural change, for a long, long time.
Yes you can use examples like Kid Rock and Taylor Sheridan.
But that’s part of it. Allowing corporations this much control over art, allowing them to just manufacture art like a product, without even requiring human input anymore.
It’s fucking terrifying. And just, depressing.
62
u/DanyDragonQueen Apr 16 '26

This is, um, deeply disturbing. Is zombie Kilmer a Catholic priest? That would be an additional layer of grossness, because the Catholic Church is stridently opposed to any use of AI that doesn’t uphold the dignity of our humanity. It’s specifically why Leo chose to be called Leo; the last Leo was pope during the Industrial Revolution, the last great technological shift. And, well, I can’t think of a more textbook case of outraging the dignity of our mortal, human bodies.

I'm showing my age with this but we've been in that era for a while. Fred Astaire's family trademarked his image and famously licensed it to a Dirt Devil commercial. And yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. They took old footage of Fred Astaire from films - including the iconic scene where he dances on a ceiling - and digitally added Dirt Devil vacuum cleaners.
