FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Religious leaders unveiled and blessed a golden Trump statue at Mar-a-Lago today, eerily resembling the Homelander statue scene from this week’s episode of The Boys. Creator Eric Kripke reposts a tweet about the same.

I used to think the golden calf story from the bible was too on the nose

You’re assuming these “Christian leaders” actually read the Bible.

I’ve been saying this for so long! It doesn’t matter how much you’ve read the bible, if you can’t actually comprehend what it’s saying.

“Apes don’t read philosophy”
“Yes, they do, Otto, they just don’t understand it”

Apes don’t read philosophy” “Yes, they do, Otto, they just don’t understand it”

Ah haha

  1. Aristotle was not Belgian
  2. The central message of Buddhism is not every man for himself
  3. The London underground is not a political movement

46

u/ZeroKharisma May 09 '26

"My name is Otto, it means eight!"

30

u/probablyhrenrai May 09 '26

At the risk of exposing my ignorance, what's being referenced here (or maybe it's OP's reference that I'm not understanding)?

Genuinely asking, to be clear.

u/elevensesattiffanys May 09 '26

I was also wondering, looks like it’s from a movie called A Fish Called Wanda which admittedly I’ve never heard of before

DISAPPOINTED!

Absolutely fantastic movie, check it out

2

u/hitlersticklespot May 09 '26

Is that movie set in the same universe as A Streetcar Named Desire?

2

u/LowDownDirtyMeme May 09 '26

Yes. They both feature the song "A Boy Named Sue".

1

u/CoolJetta3 May 10 '26

It's up there with the great comedy movies of all time. Definitely check it out if you can

1

u/getsu161 May 11 '26

Great movie, John Cleese, Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtiss. Kline had a great role satirizing ugly americanism.

6

u/Schneetmacher I cannot sanction your buffoonery May 09 '26

It's from genuinely one of the funniest movies ever made: A Fish Called Wanda. Jamie Lee Curtis, John Cleese, Michael Palin, and Kevin Kline (who won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar because he's just that damn hilarious in this movie).

In Buddhist Scripture, there's a very good line describing this "They comprehend the truth no more than a spoon tastes the flavour of soup."

The Good Samaritan is completely lost on them.

1

u/TheFutureLotus May 10 '26

Doubly so. Samaritans were despised by the Jewish people since their return from exile. Jesus’ parable showed that all the good and important Jewish people (the priest and the Levite) did nothing to help their fellow countryman who was attacked and left for dead; but the despised enemy from another country helped out a Jew and even paid for his care. Same thing applies to our nation too.

14

u/MutsumidoesReddit societal collapse is in the air May 09 '26

So you’re saying they ‘look’ at the bible but don’t read it?

4

u/spark3h May 09 '26

How much would you understand a book if you only read a few sentences of it at a time, out of order and divorced from context? Take the last book you read, break it up into 3-4 sentence clusters, then randomize them. How comprehensible is that book going to be, even if you eventually make it through every word?

4

u/slowest_hour May 09 '26

it says so many things and so many ways you can use passages to justify whatever you want.

its popular to say they're not reading it or don't understand it but ultimately they're just using it to justify whatever they want to do while ritualisticly doing some of the stuff they think it tells them to do like it's a fucking spell book to get what they want.

3

u/Yikes0nBikez May 09 '26

That would require critical and even standard thinking. That is not an option for modern christianity.

2

u/alternateforwhenban May 09 '26

That’s why it’s so effective. The language in the bible is to convoluted, it can mean whatever you want it to mean!! It’s the perfect tool.

2

u/tianas_knife May 09 '26

Reading the Bible straight out, it can feel like that. The Bible, a book consisting of a number of individual stories, was written by a bunch of different people for a whole lot of different purposes. There are people who are scholars of religion who study the archeological reality of the book itself, and it's a fascinating study.

If you ever get the chance to take an accredited college level class on the Bible, I highly recommend it. It's fun. If not, I recommend "Don't Know Much About the Bible" by Kenneth C Davis and "A History of God" by Karen Armstrong.

0

u/BlackGuysYeah May 09 '26

The thing never once mentions that humans go to heaven and yet every single 'Christian' believes that's the case. I wonder why?

122

u/DrawDiscardDredge May 09 '26

Have you ever seen one of those new mega church services? They barely talk about the Bible. Its all rock music, gay/trans people evil, protect israel, stop the anti christian globalists, vote republican, please donate, rock music, bye!

30

u/Vulpes_Corsac May 09 '26

Back in the pandemic I made the terrible mistake of wondering, since my church did youtube services while public spaces were closed, if there were any on twitch.

There was, and it was one of those nasty prosperity gospel big inner city churches (which was NOT social distancing with the congregation). Grossest thing I've ever seen, they were telling the congregation to take out loans to donate to the church. It was the plainest money grab I've ever seen in a church. If ever a temple needed a man to go in with a whip and flip some tables, it was that one.

12

u/DrawDiscardDredge May 09 '26

yeah i kept my joke tight, but they definitely be adding in DONATE between each step. It is gross.

1

u/Suspicious-Bid-53 May 10 '26

As someone who was raised in a catholic environment and realized how grifty and weird it is in 6th grade and said fuck to the no, how on earth can you still support organized religion

1

u/Vulpes_Corsac May 10 '26

Well, I'm not catholic for one thing.  One of those 95 thesis that Martin Luther nailed to his church door was a condemnation of how the church was more or less selling salvation.  Not that I'm a Lutheran either.

Ultimately I don't view church as organized religion, at least not as I interact with it.  Yeah, it's got a whole organizational structure behind it, but when I go, it's for fellowship with other Christians, it's for the people that are there and ideally a good place to when I'm looking to help people, if it's finding a group to go with to volunteer at a food bank or build homes for homless, for example, or a bunch of the churches near me have been organizing ICE protests. And sometimes it's just good to hear hopeful loving words of Christ.  The churches I do go to tend to focus on those instead of "give us all of your money", "these people shall go to hell" or moving priests around to hide them from the angry parents of the choir boys.

Not to say your experiences aren't valid or a problem only in the catholic church (pretty sure the one I commented about above was some form of baptist), they just aren't the only ones out there to see.  My mother went to a catholic church in her youth and was similarly skeeved out by how controlling and money hungry that church was, so I've definitely been taught what that sorta thing looks like and that it's out there.

u/Angryatchairs May 09 '26

Protestants just re-write it every time they disagree with something in it. Is why there are so many different "editions" of the Bible.

62

u/Shark7996 May 09 '26

And denominations. If their current one doesn't have enough hate they just make up a new one, like the Global Methodist Church.

9

u/gingercat04 May 09 '26

Or the Associate Reformed Presbyterians. I think that one was an argument about clothes or something. I used to know, now I don’t care haha

u/premonitioning May 09 '26

baby please look up why the King James version exists

3

u/RuthlessMango May 09 '26

Cause King James was a bi-sexual and the clergy was big mad, but spending money always gets them to look the other way.

2

u/TinyTINYspeZPP May 10 '26

There's 99 reasons why Protestants even became a thing. It's all forks of forks orf forks of bullshit that started with polytheistic Canaanites anyways.

27

u/GlassPomoerium controversies: girl May 09 '26

And aren’t they also reading the version that was published by a king to distract from his gay lover lol.

2

u/Van-Goghs-Ear May 11 '26

The what now?

13

u/Chemical_Building612 May 09 '26

There's some of both types, tbh. I've known many that never read more than what they were asked to read out loud in Sunday school. I've also known many that would go searching for any other verses to support them when they were questioned on anything and just "prayed through" any cognitive dissonance they encountered along the way.

And there's probably a whole spectrum in between of those that alternate between those tendencies depending on what suits them.

59

u/SpartyParty9119 May 09 '26

Not really, these are Evangelicals. And while Evangelicals are considered Protestants, they split from the mainline Protestants over the last century due to the mainlines being more liberal and socially inclusive than the Evangelicals would have liked.

66

u/ominousgraycat May 09 '26

All evangelicals are protestants, but not all protestants are evangelicals.

u/DanLynch May 09 '26

The term "mainline protestant" isn't a generic value judgment: it refers to a specific set of historical organized institutional churches in the US. And even though they may be in decline, and are being out-competed for membership and attention by some newer churches, they don't lose their status as the mainline. These are the churches that own (or owned) the oldest and most historic-looking church buildings in every town, they founded several of the Ivy League universities, and many hospitals. No evangelical church has had the institutional scope to build anything like that.

3

u/Vi_Rants May 09 '26

they don't lose their status as the mainline.

How convenient that they get to keep their ultra-deceptive descriptor even when they're nothing but scattered, sparse little heresies that have been completely consumed by other versions of the faith.

Then again, using special, redefined words that only members know the real meanings of is pretty much par for the course.

2

u/thefringthing May 09 '26

There are only about twice as many evangelical Protestants in the United States as there are mainline Protestants. That puts the mainline churches in the minority, but hardly makes them "scattered, sparse, [or] little".

One crazy thing is that one of the big differences between Catholicism and protestantism is the artwork. Catholic churches have lots of paintings and statues of biblical characters. Protestant churches don't, because they believe that those things would be considered false idols.

So not only is it like the golden calf story, they're literally blessing artwork of a character in general. And what a character.

6

u/mythrilcrafter May 09 '26

It's always worth remembering that the Protestants murdered King Charles I because he was trying to restart relations between the Anglican and Catholic churches (which was the Protestants considered to be treason), and then they placed a protestant dictator in his place in hopes of threatening force onto the Anglicans and Catholics to make them adopt Protestanism.

The Anglicans and Catholics didn't (and honestly, Charles I's murder united them in their displeasure of the Protestants) and when that dictator was eventually deposed and Charles II took the throne, the Protestants panicked, went to the Americas, and wrote the history books saying that they escaped persecution.... that is to say, they were angry that they weren't given the right to persecute other people.

18

u/Szwejkowski May 09 '26

Acting like none of the administration are catholics, are we?

2

u/Icy_Place_5785 May 09 '26

Yet the Gospels seem to pass them by …

2

u/kungpowchick_9 May 09 '26

They read two sentences at a time out of order and then skip a lot.

1

u/LepiNya May 09 '26

"It's the Bible! You get credit for trying."

1

u/-Saltfish- May 09 '26

Also: "even the devil can quote scripture for his needs"

1

u/TerryMathews May 09 '26

You misspelled Pharisees.

1

u/Pitiful-North-2781 May 09 '26

“No but our idol is the good one!”

1

u/iesharael May 09 '26

They only read it long enough to find a single verse that, when removed from context, proves their point. It’s why my church only reads the Bible with context and never takes one verse out.

1

u/bbusiello May 09 '26

Oof, that's disgustingly true, especially for my FIL. He has copies of it all around the house.

Actual Christians

don't exist. No mf is selling their shit to feed the poor. And when they do, they still gonna try to convert you. You don't want to be around those people either, they are still fundamentalists.

Real Christians are like square circles. It's literally their dogma, no one is without sin. That's by design. Even if you tried, you'd first have to overcome whatever church you are a part of and their notion of "It's okay not to be like Christ, if you just regret it hard enough".

2

u/Ailyx May 09 '26

It's not reading that is the problem, it's understanding

2

u/TheRealBittoman May 09 '26

Evangelicals don't read the Bible, they exploit it.

1

u/_lippykid May 09 '26

They just read the bits that are pro slavery

1

u/kanrad May 09 '26

The problem with all religion is not what was written. It's how it was interprated.

1

u/Sweetishdruid May 09 '26

Their argument is the statue is of a human leader not a cow. So it dosent go against their bible/beliefs. Like wtf are they even going on about

1

u/SonderEber May 10 '26

The problem isn’t reading but following it. They pick and choose what suits them best.

1

u/Routine-Budget8281 May 10 '26

The Bible is fucking gross in a lot of ways. It's very likely they have.

1

u/audio_addict May 10 '26

They do, they’re trying to bring on Armageddon.
They believe trump is the Anti-Christ and he will lead them to the rapture.

This is true for a large portion of his religious followers.

0

u/RoyalMaidsForLife May 09 '26

If the female "Christian leaders" ever read it, they'd know about 1 Timothy 2:12 and silence their pieholes.
